Yup, I am the Michele that she made reference to in her book. I remember hearing this shortly after it was recorded as she had gave me a copy of her demo tape, when that's what it was literally, a tape. Brings back memories. I also know that she would never have lied about her heritage, nor would her late mother have. I had the privilege of having known her late parents....believe me, they were genuine, extreme down to earth folk, who loved Eilleen so, so, so much.

Not just because of the recording quality, but the quality of the takes screams demo. Demos that she did a long time ago. She must've signed/not signed the right thing for the producer to be able to release these tracks which were recorded long before a lot of the digital editing tools were around which are pretty much the standard for singers like her. I think its early stuff probably when she was trying to find a niche and I would agree this was not it. Sounds like a standard cover session song, but even so her voice has quality even here, a little tinny, but then the whole things sounds a little tinny. I think what makes it sound so inferior is that Cher's deep powerful voice in the original version contrasts so sharply with the Alvin and the Chipmunks percussion section backing in this version.

I never thought I would ever enjoy a song by Shaina Twain. A rock song, at that. Damn, she should have stayed with the rock music. I think she was also brave to cover a Cher song. Most people who do that end up fucking with the song beyond belief.

This is a demo from very early in Shania's career, a good effort for one of her first recordings IMO plus it applies to her life as she was half Indian
This version was eh ... for me. That's maybe because she's not indian in any kind of way or even looks it. Her parents taste in lovers or husbands does not make her that nationality. She is what she is , you can not adopt a nationality it has to be in your blood. That said it was eh... nothing to rave about.
I prefer Cher's version myself and I will agree that Cher (especially before all the cosmetic surgery) looked a whole lot more indian than Shania ever has.
However, Shania has indicated in the past that her "Biological" father was part Cree Indian and I don't think its a staggeringly huge stretch to see possible Indian features in Shania. I've seen quite a few folks that were at least part Indian that looked less Indian than Shania.
It's definitely not quite in the same level as Cher's but it's not bad. and definitely better than listening to a drunk try and sing it at a karaoke bar.

I'm a fan of both versions. The original is the original, but Shania definitely rocked this up. I prefer it like that and I think she rivals Cher vocally as well here. Cher has earned her footsteps in the biz, I'm a fan of hers just the same, but there's no denying this is good to me.

@1americanidol11 Cher is NOT half Native American and the song "Half Breed" is not about her, although she did record it first. Cher's mother was PART Cherokee (I don't think half) and Cher's father was of Armenian descent,

I'm not sure its quite that bad,
I think its early stuff probably when she was trying to find a niche and I would agree this was not it. Sounds like a standard cover session song, but even so her voice has quality even here, a little tinny, but then the whole things sounds a little tinny. I think what makes it sound so inferior is that Cher's deep powerful voice in the original version contrasts so sharply with the Alvin and the Chipmunks percussion section backing in this version.

I am A Half Breed that actually grew up on Red Lake indian reservation in Minnesota with grand parents who were born to The Ones forced to reservations and they took pride in The Life even if unfair. And respected what was left of our family tree after the genocide. I am not about to let someone take claim because they think its beautiful to be indian.

This version was eh ... for me. That's maybe because she's not indian in any kind of way or even looks it. Her parents taste in lovers or husbands does not make her that nationality. She is what she is , you can not adopt a nationality it has to be in your blood. That said it was eh... nothing to rave about.

I prefer Cher's version myself and I will agree that Cher (especially before all the cosmetic surgery) looked a whole lot more indian than Shania ever has.
However, Shania has indicated in the past that her "Biological" father was part Cree Indian and I don't think its a staggeringly huge stretch to see possible Indian features in Shania. I've seen quite a few folks that were at least part Indian that looked less Indian than Shania.

I'm a fan of both versions. The original is the original, but Shania definitely rocked this up. I prefer it like that and I think she rivals Cher vocally as well here. Cher has earned her footsteps in the biz, I'm a fan of hers just the same, but there's no denying this is good to me.
One thing's for sure: it definitely ain't Country. Shania wasn't Country until the 1990's. This is the 1980's and it's a Rock song.

i can say i agree, Cher just sounded so much better singing this song. She fit the look more, expecially of a Cherokee, and her voice just sounded better singing it. Shania is a awesome singer, but this song just dont sound right by her.
