I did something like this in the soundfont format for creative emu based (live/audigy/x-fi) sound cards, i just did this entirely with software and some on the fly synthesis techniques, almost all instruments and presets are totally customizeable also, so you can customize it to your liking, or swap algs (in this case, samples/instruments), although i am still working on it, if anyone is interested, i'll give it out for exchange of your opinion on it. r-fmGM soundfont 5mb w/100's of gm presets.
