I think this is possibly one of the best scenes in the trilogy. But I was wondering: what language are the subtitles in? Because I don't recognize it,
@DestinyHeroFlamer Not spanish. Portuguese. serafimfx is right. Sad day for Chateau if he speaks Spanish and can't even tell when something isn't Spanish.
Smith doesn't seem to understand that no existence has any inherent meaning. There is no purpose without life because without life, the universe is meaningless. It is only a swarming mass of particles and energies. Life can give these things meaning and purpose. The purpose of life is to give the universe purpose. Smith should recognize that machines could not exist if living things did not invent them first. But where is the line between a living thing and a sophisticated machine?
its not because there is no other choice, submitting would be a choice. But he chooooses to fight no matter what odds against him. inspiring... he loses no matter what, has no purpose to fight and yet he choose too.
Without meaning, without goal, without anything but his own will!
Exactly my point. In fact the very same message of that philosophy can be found in another line from another popular movie:
"I'm a dog chasing a car. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just DO things." - Heath Ledger's joker
By logic, the actions of both characters are justified if purpose is irrelevant. Neo was not a protagonist and Ledger's joker was not an antagonist... both just "did" things.
with every thing against him he has nothing left but a choice as long as he can move and fight on he has that choice no matter what not for any goal but simply because one choice is more preferable than the other because if he quit than he has no choice but to submit and thats not much of a choice at all
what you and smith don't understand is neo's will to persist and by will alone he accomplished all that he did pragmatism is irrelevant in the matrix where he can do any thing and its the impracticality of neo's actions that in the end win it all for him
A will that is based on... what? This is what Smith's nihilistic speech was pointing out. Neo's actions, if not grounded on an objective metaphysicality, were simply resting on circular reasons. It was irrational.
"he can do anything"...
This is precisely what I was talking about earlier. Saying that you will do anything based on your own subjective will can be used to justify any action. Whether you be Neo, or you be Ledger's joker. Thus, good and evil loose their differentiations.
Perhaps you were misreading. I specifically said that Smith's speech had nothing to do with pragmatism. So in essence you were agreeing with me on that part. And this just goes on to support the other point I was making.
Great acting from the machine, not so good acting from the human ._.

"Because I choose to" is very insufficient.
It doesn't defeat Smith's nihilism.

Because he makes a choice to care regardless of the situation. He chooses, so the purpose behind it is irrelevant.

You seem to not understand the philosophical issue I was pointing to. This had nothing to do with the pragmatism Neo's predicament faced.

Yeap, in the end that's it, we just choose it, no matter why, what or when, we choose what we do and we are what we do!
