Roger Waters is profoundly more authentic and cool than his hint of such onstage. Before his annual Physical in 2006 I had the honor of chatting with him for just a few minutes.My staff, seeing me visible changed as he left, asked me if I was alright. "I'm better than I've ever been before," I told the Scheduling Assistant, "I want to have a Staff Meeting before we go home tonight." I became a much better physician that day. Roger is a Global Treasure. He eclipses Philip Glass and Hans Rott.
@rmansyur1 Strange you say that, but I have been recently thinking that myself. All my favorite floyd stuff is generally the stuff he did the vocals for, and the more i listen to his post floyd stuff, the more i simply cant get enough of it!
@rmansyur1 I think Roger is a lyrical genius. Since he left, lyrically Floyd have been 'average' However, musically, I prefer what Post Roger Floyd did, over what Roger did as a solo. However, I love what Roger has done too! :D
This is one of his most beautiful songs and I'm so glad that I got to see him do it live. That said, I was a little disappointed that he used a vocal track instead of just stumbling through with the back up singers covering the higher register. I realize at his age that he can't quite hit the falsetto like he used to but still feel it was poor choice to use the backing track.
This is the first time I was ever aware of this song and I still prefer this to the one off the actual album. Then again I'm not really a fan of Pros and Cons in general.
One of the best songs roger has ever sung.It still makes a little tear fall from my eye every time i hear this haunting song,so so beautiful ,thanks geofront :)
@gordbard It's a Danelectro Baritone guitar with a capo. You can even find old pics of Jimmy Page playing an old Danelectro U3, They are inexpensively priced (and constructed), they have a loyal following, particularly among players going for a rockabilly or jangly byrds type sound. Cheers!
I think Roger Waters is the greatest 'musical' genius ever. NO-ONE can write a song or album like Roger. Many people will believe that Roger Waters isnt bigger than Pink Floyd. I disagree. . . .Roger Waters IS Pink Floyd, end of.
@Sycoops Indeed, Waters is a legend. But to say he IS Pink Floyd is I think going a bit too far. Pink Floyd's greatest success was when the band as a whole was working together. Granted, Waters was the creative force behind those big albums, but take away Wright, and especially Gilmour, and you wouldn't have those great PF tunes that we know and love. Or at least they wouldn't be anything like the end result was.
@piperathegates2112 Roger Waters IS the Pink Floyd that we know and love. The early stuff (Piper At The Gates, Saucerful Of Secrets) this was mainly all Syd's gear and ok its good for what it it is but it isn't 'Pink Floyd'. The later stuff, without Roger (Momentry Lapse, Division Bell), I mean 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason'?? Come on? If it wasnt for the mind of Roger Waters we wouldnt have (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut).
@Sycoops Its' true, we wouldn't have those great albums without Waters being the creative force behind them. But they would be nothing like what the end result ended up being if not for Gilmour and to a lesser extent, Wright. There's no doubt that Dark Side and Wish You Were Here were GROUP efforts.Sure, the concept may have been Roger's, but you need more than just a good idea or good lyrics. You need a vehicle to get your point across. Waters had that balance with Pink Floyd.
@piperathegates2112 Without that balance, Pink Floyd suffered. The Final Cut isn't a bad album, but its not on par with those other big albums. And I think the big reason for that was that by that point, Waters wanted to completely run the band, with little or no input from the other members. At least during the Wall, Gilmour still had somewhat of a creative input. (Though Waters got greedy on giving songwriting credits to him) The Final Cut was basically a Waters solo album.
@piperathegates2112 And you're right about the post Waters Floyd alums. Momentary Lapse of Reason wasn't that great. Gilmour brought a bunch of other people to help write just to try to fill Waters' shoes. For the most part, it didn't work. Division Bell on the other hand is a great album in my opinion. However, Gilmour again used other people (including his own wife) to help with the songwriting. They are great songs, but they aren't on that same level as Waters.
@piperathegates2112 THESE are the albums that we hold so close. THIS is PINK FLOYD and that all stems from Roger. You mention his solo work. I hold 'The Pros and Cons' up there with those Pink Floyd albums, its a masterpiece. Clapton was the lead guitarist on that. Dont get me wrong, I love all of the lads but I know that if Roger Waters hadnt have been around or if Roger Waters had have got sucked into to acid like Syd did we wouldnt have wat we have today.
@Sycoops Pros and Cons is probably might least favorite Waters album. Yes, Clapton was the guitarist on that, but who can tell? The album is way too wordy. There isn't enough music to carry all those lyrics. There's bits of good stuff from Clapton here and there. But pretty much any session musician could have played what he did on that album. Waters didn't give much for Clapton to work with. And that's why it was necessary to have that give and take between Gilmour and Waters.
@Sycoops Gilmour's contribution as a brilliant guitarist and vocalist can't be overlooked. I seriously doubt Waters wrote any of those amazing solos that are featured on those great albums. "Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them" were Wright tunes. "Comfortably Numb" was Gilmour's. The opening note sequence to Shine On was DG. Same for Wish You Were Here. "Echoes", arguably the band's best piece of music, was written by all 4 members. And these are just a few examples.
@Sycoops Again, I love Waters. I do think he is most creative and best songwriter of all PF members. But he's not the best vocalist nor musician. And if in fact, he was Pink Floyd, then his records should be as good if not better than anything he did with PF. Clearly this isn't true. His solo stuff is good, some of it great. But it isn't Pink Floyd. The same can be said about Gilmour and his solo material. Its' not Pink Floyd. It can't be. Each is missing the components that made PF great.
Roger is the man. A good performance with great backing vocals however, I think it falls short of the original version with Eric Clapton's seemless lead guitar essentially singing with Roger.
Sadly, I feel the candle winding down on our story, and the iconic native american's story is a metaphor of our own culture vanishing from this cold and beautiful planet. Make a change...
@genesisjin Listen to the end high part. "And I see signs of half remembered days..." etc. It's a recording. Waters is lip syncing to a backing CD. The first part of the song is live though.
@dufortrph I do think he is a genius, this song on that (drunken) night just sounded very like Roger Waters... Not going anywhere new. Listened today and enjoyed it much more, there is a grey area between musical style and derivativeness and this is well and truly in there, it is well and truly his style, almost too much for me. Of course it is IMO only and looking at the other comments, I am well and truly alone :).
Roger is truly a genius. Lots of die-hard Floyd fans don't like him cause they think he is still a jerk. Trust. He is not a jerk. If your wife left you you'd be an angry person also. He was going thru a hard time at the late 70's and early 80's. He got thru it and is thankful for that and if you see them together at live 8 you see that he really has grown and is a better person now. he still is too proud to beg for forgiveness but it should be given to him. What a great person he has become.
Whoever it is , Waters or Gilmour, who is NOT or is REFUSING to work with the other is SELFISH and should tear down that wall that is preventing you from doing so !
Pink Floyd is enjoyed by so many , please think of us too when you decide not to work with eachother.
@Sevilea you may be interested to hear that gilmour has agreed to play with waters on one show of his upcoming tour. While it's not much, it's a nice gesture.
He is lip syncing that part, but what the hell. Tough range to sing live! This man's music has affected so many of our lives for the better. He is truly one of the greatest songwriters ever.
The push part if the song sounds identical to the album. The irony of this is that we wouldn't care what it sounded like if he sang it live. Just to hear Roger's true voice on what is the climax of the whole album would be special.
Brilliant - don't care what it costs - i'm going to see Roger play whenever he tours again - this is brilliant - lip synching or not......who cares?!! Love Floyd, Gilmour, Waters, Yes & Marillion - but Waters is special.........
that guitar player is andy fairweather low, one of the best who does backing music and vocals for the likes of waters and clapton, superb guitarist!!!!!
What are you smoking? It's totally lip synced. It sounds exactly like it does on the recording, and the camera shots aren't close up. I wonder why...
whatever ya gotta tell your self but i just counted 16 close up seperate cam shots the man has more talent in his pinky toe nail than you have in your whole state,(whichever state that may be) so find someone else to trash like some of this new hip hop rap worthless s h i t thats not worth the time spent on making it or the torture it puts on people who have to listen to it.
Okay something is wrong with you. First of all I love Roger Waters. Hell Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time! I never said in anyway that I was more talented or creative than Roger Waters. Second I'm not trash talking him either. I'm simply stating a fact that in this song HE LIP SYNCS! I'm not saying he's not talented. When you get older your voice loses that ability to sing and stuff like you used to. It's not Roger's fault that he can't hit those high notes anymore.
@Hogweed11 On the contrary, there is a very clear and distinct difference between the two performances. As for him lip synching in this concert: I doubt it considering the concert was recorded and produced as a live album.
I'm not saying that it's exactly the same as the record. I'm saying that it doesn't even sound like his voice live now. If you really don't think it's lip synced, I don't now what to say. It clearly is.
@Hogweed11 - I just gave each rendition a close listen, using a pretty good sound system, and there is no doubt - they are two completely different performances. RW's voice is somewhat deeper, grittier, smokier in the live version, and he takes longer, deeper breaths between lines. What is really amazing is how close he came in live performance to the studio version.
After "And now.." and until the line "the hope you kindle", he is lip synching. ONLY this part, and maybe some similar parts in other songs on the In The Flesh Tour. He lip synched this part when he toured Pros and Cons. It's probably why he doesn't ever play The Final Cut, because he can't sing in that high of a register night after night anymore.
I'm gonna be hated for this, and this is a great song, really, very simple, effective and emotional... But I cannot help but notice that the second part is obviously lypsinch... When he tones up it's not the same voice, and sounds exactly like the studio version. Then he comes bacj to his "original" voice, and you can hear the difference. Haven't noticed it before. Great song and great artist, anyway.
reoger waters is the most emotional artist that i have ever heard although he does playback end it's not a very good musician but he transmit a lot of energy in his songs
what i'm asking for - the English people, what does it mean - "...i plundered from the pool..." As far as I know English, in the context... well... what sense does this sentence have?
he has a bit of help vocally from 2:35 to 3:24, s'pose he is getting on a bit.

i seen this live when he toured HE DOES NO LIP SYNCING c-mon roger is waaaayyyyy to good for that kind of crap.i want some of what your smoking.
tammyphxaz 1 year ago
@tammyphxaz
What are you smoking? It's totally lip synced. It sounds exactly like it does on the recording, and the camera shots aren't close up. I wonder why...
Hogweed11 1 year ago
whatever ya gotta tell your self but i just counted 16 close up seperate cam shots the man has more talent in his pinky toe nail than you have in your whole state,(whichever state that may be) so find someone else to trash like some of this new hip hop rap worthless s h i t thats not worth the time spent on making it or the torture it puts on people who have to listen to it.
tammyphxaz 1 year ago
@tammyphaz
Hogweed11 1 year ago
@Hogweed11 This sounds absolutely nothing like it does on the original album.
goddamnit345 1 year ago
@goddamnit345
If you think that, you really need to listen back to the track, it's pretty much exactly the same.
Hogweed11 1 year ago
@Hogweed11 On the contrary, there is a very clear and distinct difference between the two performances. As for him lip synching in this concert: I doubt it considering the concert was recorded and produced as a live album.
goddamnit345 1 year ago
@goddamnit345
I'm not saying that it's exactly the same as the record. I'm saying that it doesn't even sound like his voice live now. If you really don't think it's lip synced, I don't now what to say. It clearly is.
Hogweed11 1 year ago
@Hogweed11 - I just gave each rendition a close listen, using a pretty good sound system, and there is no doubt - they are two completely different performances. RW's voice is somewhat deeper, grittier, smokier in the live version, and he takes longer, deeper breaths between lines. What is really amazing is how close he came in live performance to the studio version.
Bobob49 1 year ago

Great song and great artist, anyway.
aarojasf 2 years ago 5
He probably can't reach those high notes anymore.

No, KAOS came out in 87, this was his first.

I think that his first solo album was Music From The Body (1971). The Pros and Cons was the first after Pink Floyd's era.

I don't consider a soundtrack as a solo album. But that is just me.

At least he doesn't lip sync the whole show like a lot of artists do today. For his age, he still puts on a great live concert.
