There are no words to describe just how good this is but i'm going to have a try anyway. Genre defying, genuinely original, inspirational, i could go on........
Such a wonderful groove. That main part is a dead knock out. Anybody know what song this is? I downloaded 2 drink minimum's afkap if thats what it is and it doesnt sound like this.
that's the whole point. each piece is improvised around a groove, or a form, etc... so every performance is completely different. absolutely incredible!
Naturaltoby - I totally agree with you. The general music listening public suffers from complete Plot Loss and is Utterly retarded. I consider myself lucky that my Parents raised me on Intellectually Superior Music and I understand it's value and Beauty...
Superior musicians like these dudes are never appreciated in the U.S. except by other musicians or knowlegeable listeners...........Krantz, Henderson, Landau and many more...it's kinda sad......and it pisses me off!!
maybe, but what effort did this NY based gig make in reaching a wider US audience during its 6+ year together? maybe it's the size of the US that stops a combo like this touring, and perhaps the market simply isn't there. Maybe it has less to do with lack of appreciation and more to do with the economics of the matter. Carlock looks like he's getting plenty of appreciation now, topping the MD readers poll again.
I blame education. Everybody can sing. Not everyone can sing good but everybody has the ability to sing notes. It is programmed in our brains. If you speak you use certain intervals and that is all you need to know. If they just spend more time on music at school, like a real class people would become more aware of the greatness and beauty of music. Every human on earth has the ability to produce music without any more knowledge then is programmed in them. It is sad so few really use it.
Man! I miss this trio! So much better than his new one i think...Keith is insane! I love his style! And Wayne's the BOSS! His style is so....awesome! fucking sweet stuff!
true, personal preference i spose. saw the new trio at brecon jazz last year, they're pretty aamazing still, but just i love keith carlock as a drummer and its just like RAWR :)
well, when Greenwhich Mean came out it took me a while to warm to it, as I had been listening to so much of the Goines/Danziger line-up, but now I love this trio, so yeah it is a pity it's all over, Carlock is fantastic, and I love his time playing, I just find his soloing kinda weak, musically, compared to Danzinger and Almond.
I know what you mean about his soloing, but his playing in general is quite original, when i first heard it, i was like woah! so fresh! they're all amazing drummers anyway.
digimaton, is it possible to catch Wayne playing 55 now? i thought he signed off in 2007. i'm gonna be in NY in mid august and dying to know if i'll be able to catch him there.
Wayne Krantz is a motherfucker on the guitar, and when he plays the role as a supporting musician he shines, making the entire group sound better. He is nothing but a master!!!
I'm going to Venture a guess at Afkap... since it said it on the screen. But, that could be a mistake since it sounds nothing like the Afkap from the recordings I have.
However, I am completely for the exploration and progression of this style of improvised music. It's an introspective style as he said. So to be true to the concept of this music, a player has to dig deep and develop their own style with the same spirit in mind. Hopefully, it would something completely different and if an artist is being true to themselves then I think everyone would appreciate that much more.
Yeah totally Will Ferrell...........but Lefebvre is not clowning around one bit. Krantz is such an inspiration. Please no generic imitations. Please!! lol "Why would another grown man try to sound like another grown man." That's a good quote.
Every time I hear this song it's completely different. it's kind of like that with all his songs actually. and when I say "Different" I dont mean it's like most jazz which is heavily improvised and made up on the spot. I mean, the melody is different. Incredible
He came up with all the latest wonders at his old age, what we need now is young chaotic jazzmen progressing his ideas. That's progressing, not imitating. Hooha.
Ya. Adding to that his frequent avoidance of resolution makes for a very "un-triadic" approach which makes his playing sound unconventional and unique. Of course, there are other factors, like his use of open strings, 2nds, 6ths, 7ths, etc.......
He says in the videos, he's not drawn to the language of jazz anymore. As well as saying he used to play like Metheny & Pass.... I don't understand the need for rigid genre names anymore. People ask 'what does it sound like?' - you just can just point them at a youtube clip. Pre-internet, you'd have to rely on some critic clumsily attempting to describe sounds with words, hence genres. His style is how it sounds. Just listen.
Yeah actually theres a cd called "live at the 55 bar" or something similar. It's not on amazon and the cd store I called couldn't order it... so I'm not sure how available it is.
Ya I don't know why they did that. Afkap is from 2 Drink Minimum, and it's a completely different tune. Infinity split is different too. On the original Infinity split, they play pieces of track 2 from Long to Be Loose. On the supposed Infinity Split here they play part of track 4. On your basic live, they play those parts on on the tune "two". I don't know why they had them mixed up haha, but it's a great video anyway.
Well, I've often seen TV production staff making many mistakes like this on this kind of documentary and/or live concerts (specially with foreign artists). They usually change or misspell the song names (sometimes for all songs), or even worse, misspell the artists' names. It's certainly due to their lack of intimacy with the artist work.
Add to that Wayne's common practice of sometimes not even naming (or putting temporary names on)the new tunes the band is playing for the first times (probably putting definitive names when the cd is about to be out). Also, Wayne chooses names that are far from obvious! :D
The video refers to the song featured here as "Afkap," but that's incorrect. Actually it's the "Three Pager" -- you can find a version of it on Wayne's "Your Basic Live" CD (2003).
