  • And i think us atheists should be burned at the stask for even knowing these interesting facts. We know that too much knowledge is completely incompatible with religion.

  • Very well explained & interesting video thanks.

    Thom in Scotland.

  • I think i get it. The miracle water ice sinks, so that one's fine. But the regular water ice floats? In which case the regular water ice is the same weight as a duck, and by extension, is made of wood. So regular water ice is also a witch. With that being the case, may we burn it?

  • On our way to make a nuke? ;D

  • what's that magical or miracle water???

  • What happens when people drink heavy water?

  • @MrJasbur1 They gain weight

  • @MrJasbur1 Nothing, unless all you drink is heavy water. Once you replace replace 25% to 50% of a human being's body water with dueterium water, you could have a problem. (Source: Wikipedia article on "Heavy Water").

My advice would be to stick with regular water because regular water and heavy water taste about the same anyway. Also regular water is a lot less expensive. Dueterium water really isn't that useful unless you want to build a fusion bomb.

  • Heavy water?I heard that name before.I think it has something to do with german nuclear bomb attems in WW2

  • Huh... according to my (admittedly terrible) understanding of chemistry, you can actually drink heavy water with no side effects because it's a stable isotope.

  • @ross817 duterium is harmless when consumed in minute concentrations but since it is 2 times as dense as simple hydrogen it can cause problems in concentrations of above 50% in the body as it reacts much slower than hydrogen

  • wait wwwhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?

  • deuterium is hydrogen, just with a neutron

  • Crack out the heavy water lol... dare I ask what experiments you were running to obtain such heavy water??

  • @Greeny992UK TF is one of those people who will either blow himself up in a 7 storey fireball, or go on to win a Nobel prize.

  • the magic of extra neutrons

  • Wait... so does this mean that since Christians are more dense, they will sink and intelligent atheists will float? OMG! We ARE WITCHES!!!! They are SO going to burn us at the stake!

  • nvm, it can be toxic in high doses. quote - "Mammals given heavy water fall ill from lack of needed blood-cell and intestinal-cell replacement, and die when about 50% of their body-water has been replaced with heavy water."

  • can you drink heavy water? since it is more dense it could mean that it would alleviate de-hydration faster.

  • i just realized this was tunderf00t

  • Comment removed

  • Is this "degassed" water? The one that supposedly has health benefits for seedlings?

  • Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic...

... and that was seriously magic.

This world is a much better place for having guys like you in it !!!

  • Deuterium how fascinating how to get my intellectual zeal back I've lost it

  • yeah! higher physics FTW

  • thunderf00t where did you get D2O from? isn't that stuff really expensive?

    *shrug* it may not be....

  • @scienceguy8888 he says at the end - about $1 a gram

  • I enjoy your videos! But I must say, you're so smart that I have to Google a lot of the words you say. :)

  • @zse4rfvgy7uj admitiing that u r a dumbf*ck actualy makes u a smart motherf*cker

  • @FreeeeS calm the fuck down....just because he doesnt understand doesnt mean you talk to him like that

  • @gerudgutierrez calm down urself cant i talk like samuel L jackson?!

  • @FreeeeS lol whatever.......ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER DO YOU SPEAK IT!

  • at 5:45 Question: "so, uh, who takes credit for this?"

    my proposed answer: MANKIND

  • can u drink the D20

  • @lewa3801 you might be able to....

If my high school chemistry serves me right, the D is just an isotope of Hydrogen....

So... you can drink H2O, so why not D2O?

  • $ 1,000,000,000.00 REWARD!! PROOF OF MIRACLE. GOD OR SATAN. I REALLY DON'T CARE WHICH.

  • @01sircharles ...the bible!!! haha i keed i keed :P

  • WOW!!!

  • Where did you got that heavy water?

it is expensive and quite hard to get as I know

I would like to get some of it for my experiments too.

  • So you're saying God made the magic ice sink? ;)

    Thanks, that was very interesting.

  • So you're saying God made the magic ice sink? ;)

    Thanks, that was very interesting.

  • So you're saying God made the magic ice sink? ;)

  • its heavy water, simple enough

  • Huh, I was surprised that D2O had that big of an effect. Now that I think of it, that's obvious though. I was trying to think of what it could be, thought it might not be Ice I, but obviously it would've sank in both, and also there's the problem that non-Ice I only forms under high pressure.

Oh, and where the hell did you get that much heavy water anyway? That stuff's mildly dangerous on its own, and can be used to fabricate Plutonium fairly easily

  • @gimmethegepgun Okay, nvm the second paragraph, didn't watch the last minute or so first :P

  • We are living in the last days as Jesus prophesied...Yet another Earthquake Jesus said the End Times will be like a woman in birth pains. Meaning her pains are frequent. The world has never experienced this level of earthquakes.

6/10 of the worlds most devastating Earthquakes has been in the last 90years. The world has been in constant war since then. Jesus said there will be wars & rumours of wars. This is only 2 theres more. Surely theres enough said here to warrant an atheist to investigate

  • @ImgBDav

Earliest known seismometer is chinese, 132 AD. Bronze thing with dragon heads dropping balls, through pendulums tracing over a stylus through inertia causing delayed movement, to 1880's damped horizontal pendulunms, to mordern days complex seismografs (science FTW yay!). No scale was agreed upon until 1935, developed by Charles Richter, nor was measurers wide spread. This only in human history - still 4.5 billion years to account for.

    Proove it

Oh wait! Young earth creationist, right?

  • @tdjdk

    Nice copy and paste job,lol

  • heavy water in and of itself is not toxic.

It gets a bad rep because of the use of lye as an impurity to aid electrolisis which will leave the heavy water behind as it resists electrolisis compared to normal water so the more electrolisis a sample of water undergoes the more of it will be heavy water and higher concentrations of lye as well.

  • @dsdougharty Actually, heavy water is toxic to an extent. It requires about 40-50% of a human's water to be replaced with D2O to be lethal in us, though, which obviously amounts to about 1/3 of our body mass. Significantly more lethal to bacteria and plants though.

And the main reason it has a bad rep is because of an incident where a nuclear reactor worker dumped half a cup of heavy water (which included a lot of tritium) into a water cooler, people got rad poisoning, media was stupid. wiki D2O

  • Cheers!

  • I thought this was going to be all about holy water! XD

  • Thank you for the high school chemistry lesson. Isn't God great that he has created two different substances, water and heavy water, which seem identical but can be differentiated by the application of human intellect and experimentation. God is indeed great!

  • how to make miracle water

  • It's holy water and you are against GOD !!!!! {joke}

  • ...and again Thunderf00t sharing some fun science stuff with us...

    Thanks for doing it! ;-)

  • Great video, are you Peter Popoff's supplier?

He's making all that money and you're working in someone else lab. You could be buying your own labs but I suppose some people have to have a conscience.

  • Everyone should watch out for dihydrogen monoxide poisoning aswell! its under reported but kills thousands every year! the government just doesn't want us to know about it because its contaminated the water supply!

  • LMAO ya water poisoning can happen if you drink too much and drown internally, but I love the joke. Penn & Teller's BULLSH** show had a bunch of green peace people sign a form trying to make dihydrogen monoxide illegal and succeeded

  • I read a "paper" published by greenpeace a month of so ago. They cited one reference which was a website and falsified the rest of the info. I wouldn't have gotten away with that at 14...

  • oh no! water poisoning!

  • lol...well some people fall for it.

  • and it can be deadly.

  • Comment removed

  • What happens if you drink it?

  • I believe it's poisonous if you drink it in large enough quantities.

  • deuterium oxide is called "heavy water" and it was said to be "drinkable without harmfull effects" on the BBC... its attoms of H (hydrogen) are replaced by deuterium. it can kill micro organisms but isnt dangerous.

deuterium is more heavy than Hydrogen.

    HENCE its name "heavy water"

WIERD but you can tell its heavy while drinking it :P

  • clever. I love experiments or demonstrations. However you lable this

  • Damnit Thunderf00t. I wanted to believe this was a miracle.

  • rofl now we no y jesus could walk on water

  • Yes, he walked on a sea of heavy water.

  • God I love science. Well done, thanks.

  • i wonder what the magic water tastes like...

  • What happens if you ingest D2O?

  • My chemistry teacher said it is poisonous.

  • i like your videos and all thunderf00t but this one made my ears bleed

some of us are wearing headsets you know

  • Erm... did Thunderfoot suggest that 90% of 12 grams was roughly 10 grams? 90% of 12 is 10.8 what is much closer to 11 grams when rounding... and still clearly heavier then the 10 grams of water... about 8% heavier. Not that I am much of scientist myself, but I do oh so love my mathematics on occasions.

Still good video, I think more pre-work could have been on what was said, Thunderf00t appeared to make quite a few errors during this video.

  • @DoomsdayR3sistance "Not that I am much of scientist myself, but I do oh so love my mathematics on occasions." I thought mathematics is a science.

  • If I remember correctly... Mathematics is related to physics but is not strictly speaking science in it's own right. Science follows a methodology where Mathematics is more about "numerical problem solving". Of course I could be wrong :)... wouldn't be the first time... or second... or third... etc.

  • mathematics is about logic and so everything potentially is in some way derived from mathematics. except religion. no logic there. only silly. agree?

  • The only logic in religion is the logic it, itself tries to define but when checked out actually shows itself as being completely illogical.

So yeah, I agree no logic in religion, only illogic that it claims is logic.

  • Aside from religion, you have ethics, art and love. There are probably more worthwhile non-logical pursuits that could be added to that list.

  • Good question stated at the end.

  • hmm i don't supose you've ever gotten your hands on enough H3 water to do this with all 3 have you? i imagine it would be quite dramatic

  • DENSITY IS EVIL!!

  • Is that the water Jesus walked on?

  • It's called sarcasm

  • no no i think its called Sarcasm

  • Well, you enjoy your sarcasm, and I'll enjoy my life.

  • I will enjoy my sarcasm shame you want enjoy your life with your retarded assumptions of people

  • mmhm, no no, keep going, I'm listening, no really... I care what you think.

  • Thank you, I know id win over some one :P guess its just cos I'm good

  • Than why the fuck you did watched it than???? And the video isnt 2 min its 5min 47 sec!

  • I watched it because it looked like it was actually funny. And if you actually thought about what I said, you'ld realize I stopped watching it after 2 minutes.

  • You wasted your own 2 minutes.

No one forced you to watch this.

  • I thought it would actually be funny, you know, ha ha humor. This was what we call false advertising. There was nothing funny about it.

  • How is it false advertising it's better then marketed!

  • overall made by humans

  • The science is strong within this one!

  • 5:30 "This is... an experiment done by an Englishman, in a French laboratory, with materials supplied by the Americans..."

Sounds like an opening to a joke. "An Englishman, a Frenchman, and an American walk into a bar..." XD

  • the englishman says...a heavy water please etc

  • @DraconicLink A Jew and a Catholic priest walk into a bar, and say "Hey, did you hear the one about us?"

  • OH MY SCIENCE! a miracle from science, we thank yee oh science!

  • praise thy science

  • This may be a dumb question, but how safe is it if you ingest D2O? Obviously it would not be very cost effective to drink it, but i'm just curious.

  • When the water in eukaryotic organisms is replaced by more than about 25 to 50% heavy water, they experience toxicity due to interference by the deuterium with the mitotic apparatus of these cells. Higher organisms, including mammals, if given only heavy water, soon become ill and die at the point that about half their body water has been replaced. Bacteria, however, are able to grow slowly in pure heavy water.

  • Science takes credit. And we all benefit. Damn, isn't pearlism awesome?

  • is that stuff drinkable? xD

  • It's not toxic, but your body cannot handle the extra weight. It would require more energy to process it than you would receive, causing you to die from exhaustion. A few drops would be fine because there is trace levels of heavy water in ordinary water, just don't push it.

  • oh k.... i doubt it's deadly though (except you stop drinking normal water)...

sounds like a good, yet expensive way to lose some weight :P

  • No, deuterated water is not toxic in any reasonable amount. The only way any adverse effects will be observed is if you were to drink only deuterated (heavy) water continuously for several weeks. Even then, you will only feel sick, and not because "your body cannot handle the extra weight." What the heck does that mean anyway? It's because the rates of enzymatic reactions are sensitive to isotope effects such as changing protium (normal hydrogen) to deuterium.

  • Did you order it from Popoff?

  • stop playing with D2O! its expensive!!!

  • About $1 per gram. I hope we all appreciate his financial sacrifice.

  • At first I though you were talking about "blessed" water but when you started to talk about sinking or not, I quickly understand it was about heavy water.

Ahhhh remind me my chemistry course back in high school :D

  • Deuterium heavy water has no known toxic effects, though apparently it's caused sterility in rats from having them drink it at a near-constant rate.

Tritium (hydrogen with 2 neutrons), on the other hand, is radioactive...

  • So are brazil nuts :D

  • Wrong, it does indeed cause sterility because gametes cannot develop but if mamals dring enough it is fatal once it approaches about 50% concentration in your body. It inhibits celular mitosis.

  • I wonder if that means that you could use duterium ice to cool your drink and it wouldn't watter it down. Also makes me wonder if the stuff is poisoness.

  • in my country this is high school physics/chemistry.

  • It is in everybody's country in the western world. Don't be pompous, he didn't say it was advanced science.

  • The subtitle "Yes it's pure ice water .." gives it away. It probably would work better if secret was given at the end.

  • Ok, ok, but can it cure my cancer? :).

  • jorge9705 So you're no longer religious/superstitious? Great, but what turned you religious, was it a brain tumour that has now been removed, or have you had some decent education lately maybe? Anyway, congratulations! Life is SO much better without "fairies", "gods" or "pixies"! Wait and you'll see!! : )

  • Ray Comfort destroyed? He takes care of this himself by opening his mouth. C'mon, a crockaduck?.... he has NO understanding of the scientific world. He is a bafoon.

  • then what your saying th00nder is that god does exist?

Of course its all so clear now thanks!!!

  • Nope I was wide awake, I watched TF studder and babble his way into complete failure.

  • Have you ever tried to explain a complex idea to a recalcitrant child, in terms simple and friendly enough for it to understand? You might stutter a little, too, just trying to figure out where to begin.

  • Ray Comfort has NEVER looked like anything but an idiot.

  • Once after one of his debates I saw him stop talking and the screen fade to black, I didn't have to listen to him talk or see his face.

Best Ray Comfort impression I've ever experienced.

  • ha i knew it. the TFvsRC discussion is going to be christians answer to everything!

...when in reality, RC had no real proof of anything he said other than, "oh it was in scripture" or the "i know God made it".

TF made great points through his "why people laugh at creationists series" that dispute all of RC's explanations...such as the who painted the picture argument.

  • Is it poisonous to drink? Lol!

  • Yes, it is poisonous, but not very. You can drink it with absolutely no problem for a short while, but if you drink only heavy water for a week or so, you'll have problems. In short, it's only poisonous if you don' drink normal water, and only drink heavy water for a long time.

  • Wow, thats pretty interesting. Thanks!

  • yup... one more neutron is powerful enough to screw you up!

  • Can you drink the Heavy Water? or does it not act like water in you body?

  • it isnt actually healthy but you wont die if you try it once

  • You should not drink Heavy Water.

  • not the best video ever, but nice experiment.

  • The english scientist takes credit.

  • I remember the episode of Hogan's Heroes, where The commander and Shultz drank the Heavy water, thinking that it was some sort of magical water that increases your lifespan.

  • heavy hydrogen is also useful in the sun as it uses protons to bombard heavy hydrogen to make helium in simple proton-proton fusion chain reactions.

  • Hooray at combined national intellects and resources!

this is more a promotional video for peaceful unification than just disproving miracles :P

  • i really love how excited and impressed you are by the experiment and results, even though you understand exactly why it's happening :)

  • What a fantastic experiment! 5 stars!

  • Where can I get my hands on some heavy water. That's awesome.

  • Are you a fucking moron or something! DID you EVEN listen to what I just described to you or watch the video? The point I'm making whatever water the preacher or priest or whatever claims is holy is bollocks. The water does nothing, unless you see it as a symbolic way of a rebirth. If you truly believe that water in the hands of a priest has "mystical properties" then you really shouldn't calling me stupid, you deluded intellectual lightweight.

  • This guy knows his shit.

  • Thanks for sharing the experiment with us!

  • D2O or deuterium is when the core of the H2O molecule has 1 neutrons in it (pardon my grammar)

you should have mentioned that it's used in Hydrogen bombs and that it's an isotope of H2O it would have made what you did somewhat clearer

  • Only one question remains.

Is that D2O edible? I've never heard of it, but you do keep referring to it as water.

  • Deuterium Oxide, or "Heavy Water" is dangerous at high levels in the body, but it would require you to drink just heavy water for more than a week for you to feel any effects. You already have a small percentage of heavy water in your body, and it would be safe to drink that small beaker seen in the video. It probably tastes the same ;-), though it's just mad expensive, as he said in the video. $1-2/g means that a regular 8 oz. glass of heavy water is probably be about $200-400. see wikipedia.

  • What a thicko you are, did you buy a grade ten chemistry journal at a jumble sale? How pathetic are these uneducated morons that watch with amazement. Only in America.

  • So In conclusion: D2O sinks in H20 because its more dense.

The D2O Cube doesnt melt in H20 because it freezes at 3Celcius. Provided ofcourse that the liquid H20 is around or below 3Celcius.

  • good job!

  • Comment removed

  • Wasn't Heavy Water used in nuclear research...?

  • Correct.

  • yes

  • I'm just having fun seeing you pick up and drop and pick up and drop and pick up and drop and pick up and drop and pick up and drop the ice.

Thank you for all your videos.

  • I want to play with D20! Using it gives a really nice way to label hydrogen atoms in hydrogenation reactions, etc.

  • lol

  • Wow, your lab has the money to just let you play around with deuterium oxide?

Now I feel poor, my boss would have a heart attack if he saw me doing that, we have to have VERY good reasons whenever we use heavy water and the amount is strictly controlled. We only have about 1L in the lab.

  • Shit man you've heavy water! Were did you get that? Did you get it from your job or did you extract it yourself?

  • Now just imagine what the world would be like if we had only 1% of the world population as mini thunderf00ts (I mean atm less than 0.001% of the world population are scientists?).

  • excelent stuff tfoot, did u knw u cud use tht to make a thermonucluar device . just a thought . think about it u knw its not to hard to do

  • No, you could not make a thermonuclear device from deuterated water as deuterium is a stable isotope of hydrogen. Tritium, or Hydrogen-3, is the lightest radioisotope of hydrogen.

  • i hope u meant heaviest isotope. and im well aware its a stable isotope, my comment was merely to prove the minds of those who did not quite fully understand what deuterium is . im well aware that tritium is used in thermonuclear devices because of its high neutron to proton ratio or 3 to 1, allowing it to fuse and form He plus a nuetron and destroy one neutron and relaease it as pure energy. but thank you for comment anyways.
