  • Tower 2:

Look at this! Look at this! He blew up an engine! Equipment! We need equipment! He blew up an engine! Oh (bleep)!

    Tower 1:

And American 191 heavy, you wanna come back to what runway?

    Tower 2:

He's not talking to me! Yeah, he's going to lose a wing! There he goes! There he goes!

  • I know all the percentages, and I accept them, but I don't fly anymore. I grew up flying, every year of my life at least once. Never had an issue. Ive flown to Europe and back three times. Ive flown on large commercial and small 12 seat and under commercial/business aircraft. Been in serious turbulence, storms, and one - really- bad landing. Haven't flown for 8-9 years since the last time, and at 30, Ive come to the conclusion I just don't want to die like that if it ever comes to it.

  • I wonder if an entire recording of O'Hare ATC exists from the time of the AA191 takeoff to the aftermath where they had to deal with the disaster and directing other air traffic. I'm sure they had to close the runway and it must have been very hectic on a very busy holiday weekend. It would be very interesting to hear how ATC dealt with the entire situation, if such a tape or transcript exists.

  • I agree with Kammerz10... with all the crash videos I have seen on you tube, this picture never fails to give me the chills. I live near O'hare and often drive thru this area and it is a constant reminder to me of that day. I was in my 1978 Trans Am that day and saw the smoke near the airport, then the report came over the radio. R.I.P.

  • I wonder if ATC just assumed that the AA191 crew knew that the engine had actually torn off of the wing, or they were just in shock at what they saw. It seems to me ATC could have immediately notified AA191 of the physical loss of the engine, unless they were unsure of what they saw,or were in shock, and were waiting for the pilot to respond. The whole thing happened so fast, with the loss of hydraulics, they never had a chance...

  • I am just shocked by this video every time I watch it, I've "seen" alot of crashes on tv, here, etc. but this is the worst. Plane=fireball. No survivors.

  • Oh Jeeze.. Look at THIS.. Look at THIS.. He blew (up) an engine; EQUIPMENT..we need EQUIPMENT he blew an engine, holysh*t yeah right by that side "All right American 191 heavy you wanna come back and to what runway..?" He's not talkin to me (Yeah but hes gonna lose a wing,,there he GOES..THERE HE GOES) ..I recall from long ago a pilot made a chilling scream of OH GOD!! that was picked up by some radio but have been unable to locate it.
  • @ChristopherSaindon that was pilot of US Air flight that crashed outside of PIT in Sept 1994

  • @tommiej3 No. I know what you mean though. The Captain on 427

wasyelling PULL! and at the very end simply said "No.." That was so

very tragic as well :-( The Captain who also yelled "God!" who lived was

Al Haynes on DC10 on Flight 232. Understandable..he was landing a

DC10 at 250 miles an hour on a 6600 foot long runway. I would

use more colorful language. The Chicago pilot was a private pilot

who was talking to the tower. This ATC comm. tape is not

available anymore but I heard it. Sad..

  • @tommiej3 Just to be clear. Thanks very much for

the reply BTW! -- this guy who screamed "OH GOD"

was a private pilot (possibly a chopper) who saw

the crash very closely and the BOOM was also

audible at the very end. I remember this clearly..

Again..I had a friend on AAL 191 and it was a

very stunning and tragic time. She was in her 20s

and as full of life as anyone could be. Capt. Lux

did his best I am sure and I hope he is at peace

with the rest of these poor people.

  • @ChristopherSaindon Chris, I understand that the memorial is built and open now. Have you gone? Is it peaceful?

  • Not the pilots, this is all ATC.

  • Is this the pilot saying this or the ATC?

  • @iloveyourstory Only one word was recovered from the cockpit voice recorder: "Damn"
