Our generation has been exposed to Wynton Marsalis, and yes he's good but I think Rafael could have given him a lesson in attack and clarity. Rafaels tone is exceptional from the start of the note to the end without having to look for it. Like a great artist that sees the sculpture in a block of marble or an image on a blank canvas, they are just exposing it to the rest of us.
@matmanrhino : To be fare, two very different kinds of players.... and two very different eras. Mendez was exemplary in his generation... but Wynton has done things (both in jazz and classical music - particularly the baroque... that Mendez probably wouldn't have gone near. Both virtuosos, to be certain! Truly ingenious players.
@ThirdValve Winton focuses on a certain area of Jazz. But Mendez was a great improvisor and loved jazz. You should hear his "I Know that You Know" from the 1940s. Remember that Baroque was practically dead in the 1930s and 40s when Mendez was becoming popular. And the trumpet was not regarded as the solo instrument it now is. Mendez is responsible for that.Mendez was (and is) more than exemplary. He is simply the best.
Haha, can't help but laugh at the headline or poem or whatever to the right of his obituary article. Probably didn't mean the same back then that it does today.... but still....
Double tonguing my friend is how he is able to tongue that fast. Double tonguing, as well as triple tonguing allows the musician to tongue notes twice(double)-three(triple) times as fast. Here, Rafael is double tonging as well as circular breathing to create this endless effect. Moto Perpetuo = Perpetual (Continuous) Motion. I have the sheet music for Trumpet and (bass cleft) Euphonium, and let me tell you, this is one nasty bugger to play! (in a good way).
Well, maybe he is tonging very quickly or doing something else special that no one knows how to do. Other than that, since I cannot circular breathe very well, I'll take your word for it. Maybe it's just Rafeal's wonderful talent or a gift that no one else has that he never told anyone?!

A caveat - it is impossible to double tongue and circular breathe simultaneously. Try it.
