My hard drive has pooped out because it's really, really old, and it wont boot up anymore..so my friend gave me his hard drive from a computer he no longer uses, if I follow all these instructions and put it in, will it be like logging onto his computer?
"Be careful when handling a hard drive, they are very sensitive to shock and dropping or jarring one even from a small height can potentially damage it"
i dropped 2 hard drives (at the same time by accident) 10 feet at about 15 MPH (this is directional speed, not falling speed) down a flight of stairs and both still work. Made a hell of noise falling, but both spun up and were detected. Takes more than you may think to break a hard drive.

I have an old computer tower that does not turn on anymore but as far as I know the harddrive is fine. I want to know if I can take the harddrive out and load it on my laptop so I can get pictures and music that were on my previous computer?
First thank you for teach us how to do that and I want to know what can I do when my hard drive is compressed this one was the master before but I decide to put another one as a master and leave the old one as a slave I tried to put it but my comp doesn't showing up as well please can you help me on that thank you.
Well fuck. I just got a 1TB hard drive to put in a very old dell PC I had lying around but the connector things don't fit in the new hard drive, what should I do?
I have a 40GB drive that I want to swap out for a 180 GB hard drive. But everything on the old drive I want on the new drive. Can you make a video on how to do this?
please help me! i bought a 500GB sata harddrive, i connected it properly, and it is detected in bios, and i think its also enabled, but when i get into windows, i cant see my 2nd harddrive? is it broke? do i need to send it back?
every time i star up my computer with the new hard drive it says that it found the new hard drive and all but then it says strike the F1 key so i do then nothing happens it just keeps on saying strike the F1 key or the F2 key to set up utility please help so i got to the set up utility and i have no clue what to do from there a weird gray screen comes up saying that it recognizes my new drive but im not sure what im suppose to do from here?? please help!!!
no, older pc's use 3.5" pata drives with the wide ribbon, and newer pc's have 3.5" you can also use 2.5" sata dirves with the skinny ribbon, dont bother with scsi since mostly for servers and need termination.
I took out a 20.5 GB AT Firewall Plus AS out of a computer and tried installing a Barracuda ATA v 40 G harddrive, but it says that I have a missing operating system. I know both units ran XP...so what gives?
Thanks finally a computer similar to mine great 5 star. i have an old computer i dont use anymore and one that is the same that others use in my household just lost its fan yeah the cpu fan went on it but now i can put the Hard Drive into the old computer.

Hey, our hard drive had a lot of stuff I wanted to keep and the computer blew up (I think its the power supply). Is there any way i could take it out and some how make it an external hard drive just to get the files off onto another computer?
Question to all: im thinking of buying a new motherboard. the new bord has a PATA connection. so can i connect my old IDE hard drives to a PATA connection?
is a PATA connection the same as an IDE connection?
can i connect my IDE drives to a PATA connection thats on the motherboard?
i got the same setup as the guy making this video ( harddisks and 1 floppy) i unplugged the floppy and out it in the harddrive but my new harddrive i put there today dont work? do i NEED to pug the floppy back on?
just want to know i have 2 Harddrives and i want to put another OS on the other one so i can put it in my cousins computer can i do that and then afterwards put my old harddrive back?and will it still work as my OS?
I just wish I had that much space to work with. Also would SATA be about the same .I plan on replacing mine soon . I remember switching from PATA to SATA was kinda hard . This time I know what to look for this time .If anyone has suggestions pleeze feel free to submit it to me
SATAs are cake: all you do is connect the PSU cable into it and the hard drive cable to the port on the motherboard and you're done (after you still screw it in somewhere, obviously). As far as booting goes, Windows uses the first drive in the order unless you specify another from the BIOS menu. :3
My friend and I debated this. What are you using this computer for?
- If you're working for a company that expects you to crank out presentations or spreadsheets every week, get Professional.
- If you're like me and using it for video games, watching movies, cranking music and just about everything else short of crunching business figures, get Home.
- If you're gullible enough to think you're being smart and getting a deal by mashing those together, get Ultimate.
Whaaat? :P Isn't this a new computer? Mine is quad @ 2.50 per core, and already about 3 years old. Aim higher. I would get 7 myself, but seeing as how this rig has some wear & tear on her already, I'm waiting until my next computer because -- and be warned -- all the 7s (except Professional and Enterprise, which are meant for offices) have a single-user license, meaning you can only install each copy ONCE. If that wasn't the case, I'd grab it, too, but Vista will do for now.
i am only trying to use 1 hard drive. i plug it in and turn it on and it says media test failure, check cable. why does it say that? and what power supply cable do i use?
nickelback052893, did set the jumper correctly like the guy in the video did?
You'll want to set it to MASTER, only then will it boot into Windows. Make sure your using the right cable, there's primary master and secondary master. The CD-R drive is usually Secondary, -- unless you've switched them?
The power cables can be split using an appropriate adapter. AFAIK, the PATA cables allow two HD's each and common MB''s usually have 1-3 PATA cables. If you want more, you'll need an additional PATA controller (e.g. as a PCI device).
i understand that but can you answer me this: certian components (graphics cards for instance) are slotted into the motherboard, right? well if i had 3 graphics cards, that took up the whole of the motherboard, could i still install multiple hard dirves, if i had a big enough case? what im asking really is hard drives dont have to slot into the motherboard do they? they can just screw into the case and hook up to the psu seperately? answers welcomed!!

If your computer is reading 2, when you have one, then that means it's Partitioned.
Basically, you can make multiple hard Drives, that add up to the total Memory on the HDD(s)
Its useful because Windows XP can only format sizes up to 32GB, so having multiple Partitions is useful, if one wants to format only part of their HDD.
CS means Cable Select and it means that the hard disc is set by which plug it is connected to. If you have a second plug on the cable (the free one) you can set the new HDD to CS and it will automatically make itself the slave drive
Excellent video! So if I added a second, clean, formatted 40GB hard drive, as slave onto my installed master 40GB HD...will Windows recognize both as 80 GB total...or separately ?...I'm getting a new Dell GX280 3.4Ghz, that has only 40GB HDD...and I'm too cheap to buy a single 80GB or 160GB HDD....Thanks, any help please.
IF you make the new hard drive the slave, can you install programs to it and run them off it. For example, if I wanted to install Adobe CS3 to my new Western Digital 2T (this drive being the slave) would it still run?
DONT USE A SCREWDRIVER THAT'S MAGNETIZED!!! just thought i would let everyone know, A hdd is very sensitive to magnets you can lose all content on the hdd
Thank you soo much. I have found this really helpful. Now I can make my computer l33t with no more "no bootable partition table" messages on start up. Thanks, i look forward to more videos.
I'm trying to fix my newer HP computer that had a hard drive failure lately, I have 2 older hard drives, one is 40 gb and the other doesn't say but i think it is 20 gb,
the 40 gb hard drive doesn't have the thing that tells you how to make it a master hard drive and i cant even get the little plastic thingy out to move....
I think the 20 gb is already set as a master, but im not sure....
Yeap, We should at least buy an external hard drive so we can break open the case and there is a hard drve in it. External hard drives are made with normal hcomputer hard drives.. I Cracked open the drive and saw a hard drive. The japeness thogh the could out smart us! A normal hd! Of a comp! I put the hd in my comp amd now i have a 2nd hd! And it worksZZ!
Could you also install an operating system on the second (or third) drive next to the oprating system on the current drive? Like a multi-booth system?
If your getting a brand new drive, and don't already have one with an OS on it that your using as your master, then yes you need to obtain a OS by some means.
i did this when i was a kid, my dads computer broke so i opened it up, then io got the idea to put his ram and drive into mine to make it more powerfull!! i had no idea what i was doing but after 2 hours of working my common sense i got the job done w/o any help!
hi, thank u for posting this how to video. i have a basic idea of how to change the hard drive but wanted to search for some kind of how to video so i could see it in action. this tower u did is the exact same or very similar one im working on. its an hp pavilion xt993. looks the identical. thanks so much again. take care.
I have been known to use duct-tape or zip-ties in such instances, you want to be sure not to block any fans or vents when doing this and if using duct-tape use as little as possible as you don't want to insulate your drive.
I want this video on my XDA II phone.

Uhh...the CD drive only has memory in it when there's a disk in it.
Source: Common sense.

Grutnee 2 years ago
Windows XP can format any size partition as long as it is in the NTFS file system. FAT and FAT32 cannot handle high storage requirements

thank you very much for the info.

CS means Cable Select and it means that the hard disc is set by which plug it is connected to. If you have a second plug on the cable (the free one) you can set the new HDD to CS and it will automatically make itself the slave drive

thank you, i appreciate your response.

HELP!!!!!!

Could you also install an operating system on the second (or third) drive next to the oprating system on the current drive? Like a multi-booth system?

Ok so my science teacher tells me to reinstall my OS and im a newv at dis so whats a OS and how do i get the software iff ive lost it ???
HALOPCKING 3 years ago
An OS is your Operating System. O.S.
Eg. WindowsXP/Vista, Mac OSX, Linux Ubuntu. Ect.
And, BASICALLY you can't get the software back if you lost it.
You CAN buy a new copy off of Ebay or Amazon.

This may seem like a dumb question but I am gonna ask, cause I am just learning.
When I go to the store to get a new harddrive, I need to purchase, an OS system as well right? Hardrives are a blank slate?
Thank you for your help people
Therealmrfantastic 3 years ago
If your getting a brand new drive, and don't already have one with an OS on it that your using as your master, then yes you need to obtain a OS by some means.

buy a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, they're available cheaply on eBay, then install it just like a normal HDD.

My com only has a compartment for 1 hard disk, is there anyway i could another to it or should i just replace it?
fenblaze 3 years ago
I have been known to use duct-tape or zip-ties in such instances, you want to be sure not to block any fans or vents when doing this and if using duct-tape use as little as possible as you don't want to insulate your drive.
executorvs 3 years ago
maybe u can get a bigger compartment thing, see the thing that the guy was holding, but then again it might not even fit inside ur Case if its bigger
