not all evolution is good evolution. Accept evolution, not MUTATION. The only "sport" feeling in bboying is it's competitiveness. Battles, being the king of the cypher. But hey, we are dancing....it's love for dancing, it has philosophical factors, soul factor....how can u name it a game ? Even if by public democracy that changes.....to me this was, is, and will forever be a dance....where I don't have to prove anyone, anything but myself. Peace.
Mutation and evolution are different things. Look up the dictionary. Speaking of it with regard to animals - Evolve is to evolve into an advanced species naturally due to increase in intelligence etc. Mutation is changing the species totally due 2 xternal factors lyk radiation etc.
The case here is external factors in breaking. If u c guyz like Rubberlegz...what they r doing is DOPE stuff. But that is not bboying. Style Elements did abstract stuf too...but they did it the bboy way.
@BboyHotshot@BboyHotshot mutation is not only due to external factors, it's a derivation from its normal. It could be either intrinsect or extrinsect, doesnt matter. But I do get your point.
ight yo really my dream is to make a living out of what i love to do if i can bboy and pay the bills ill be happy but i dont want to sell out or give up on thr roots of bboying one thing corporate America will neve be able to see or feel is the emotion u feel wen u hit up a real jam im from chicago to and every time i hit up a jam its amazing i hit that lino and i forget everything the problems in my life and anything that troubles me that wat they wont be able to see wat bboy is truly about

i think personaly it should be both i do wish they got the bgirls and there opinion on this because remember they are apart of this too it should be mainstream because it gives the ones that it gives people a chance to see that we are not doing this for nothing. and that it is a life style we live and this is how we do.everyday 24/7 for most of us as long as we keep it as bboying and not let corpit america exploit us like they do on abdc
This video already shows that b-boying is already fucked up.
how can we even debate that it's ok to be a sport or they can seperate it?
most of b-boys nowadays "train" for competiton to win money
but they dont even hit up cypher when I ask them why dont you jump in a cypher?
they are like "nah man i dont feel like it"
they throw explosive ass moves. but they dont even feel the music or jump in a cypher. how do they claim to even be bboys? and now make it a SPORT? Bullshit yo.
im sorry to say this... but anybody who goes to a jam to compete goes for the cash and bragging rights.
Bboying to me is more a sport than anything else. WE train like athletes, when we lose we train harder like athletes, and etc.
ex: WHY do koreans become really good at bboying? because they take shit serious. they're not here just dancing for fun. They have fun winning and being recognized as the best.
@zerk9rocski We train like athletes. But athletes don't self express themselves through dance, do they? We train like athletes. Keyword "like". We are not athletes. We're more athletic artists more than anything. And Korea promotes their bboys bcuz they see it as a way to advertise the country bcuz it's still growing. If Korea was as big as USA, they prolly wudnt promote their bboys at all.and Korean bboys work their asses off bcuz they feel they represent their country.Koreans are super patriotic
@bboyStuntZ ok than thats what i meant i kno kid freeze hes a ''Legend''give credit before calling somebody out paved his name i just seen ure trailer u didnt invent windmills..
@MrHectorsolivan You're right I didn't invent windmills. In fact, most of the moves in my trailer I didn't invent. I also didn't imply or say that I invented them. Respect to Kid Freeze. All I said was dat he didn't invent headspin we both know that's true. Continuous headspin, now that's different. Similar, but different.
I think the comparison is skating , snowboarding and bmx, where they do have competitive events- but the competitors are their own bosses- making good paper, and still supporting the grassroots of the culture. i mean i see how it needs to stay socially based- but at the same time-the elite need to eat, be paid, or the art will die also. its a combination.
for breaking/bboying i'd say money is just a helpful bonus. expressing , having fun, meeting new people, sharing new styles , all that good stuff. is what matters
If rock steady didn't take advantage of being in flashdance b-boyin probably wouldn't have spread world wide. There's nothing wrong with getting paid but as long as you remember the history of the crew's(zulu kings, salsoul,cc crew, tbb, starchild la rock) that paved the way for you. Those brother's didn't make a fucking dime! make your money but don't forget the essence, don't be dancing for dickhead's from hollywood who don't know shit about the culture. It's competitive but it's not a sport .
@tagadef023 evolution isnt always wat's best. and objectifying bboying by glorifying comps and the prizes does NOT make it for the community. and wat needs to stay the same is foundation, originality, and respect to oldschool. this "system" doesnt benefit new/learning bboys who when they first learn, only believe in comps. They need to learn of the street culture and the origins. Too many new ppl only wanna do comps. Once it's a sport, it loses its street/hiphop factor...
let it evolve and keep the roots, legs at 2:46 talks about locking down talents but he lock down rock steady crew name? didnt he? The moves come from sports and cultures if you got it all then you the man. If your 50 or 10 years old no two ways.
idk this could go both ways bt like maybe it would be a gud thing cuz like think about it u could get paid for wat u luv to do...if all u see is ur self doin is dancin in life y not make a living out of it
HAHAHA! I love that, Crazy Legs talking like that with a big fat Red Bull Cap on his head. Everybody has their price...
The only people trying to define it are non-bboys, people who don't understand it, people trying to sell it. They can't package it and sell it if they can't define it. BBoys ain't out there trying to define it as anything, they already KNOW what it is... Its their life.
Crazy Legs at 8:45 is all that needs to be said. You should cut his section out and post it all over the world. The acceleration without style will make it so that only Chinese ,Korean and Japanese gymnast 12 yr old girls. Keep the DANCE Alive.
That and 13:13 "If we work together we can all prosper".. thank you..
i think if these people who already have events like FSS and OUT BREAK and so on they already have the control of how breakdancing and the whole culture is suppose all over the world so i dont see why they cant corporate them selves from there ?
omg . sports are things done by athletes. we are b boys . we do it to be free to have peace love with others.after all i believe bboying is clear. there are not any peals or things like drugs to make u dance better.
And at the same time, you talk of support in the community when between each other ( promoters) often, it is not like that. I had plenty of promoters in my town who come and compete with my event the same week, using the dancers I pay the flights for, etc and I already make no money with the event.
A user is a mentality, you find it , yes, in large coprporations, but in the b boy world as well. And if people who do not understand b boys should be set aside, why ask them to be your sponsors ?
( continuing ) I never made money, I lost some though, yes. did it ever occur to you to look at how amny theatres in NY program dance ? Maybe it is not something that the largest part of the population pay to see, so less money for presenters AND producers AND dancers, for that matter. I had skate and extreme sports competitions as well, Guys find their own sponsors, show up, pay to register, do their thing and leave after a good event. B boys ask and ask for airfaires, hotels, food money, etc,
I have to comment on the b boys who always complain that large corporations are always trying to use them. Don't know where this idea came from in their head. i work for a large company and convinced them to bring a b boy event 8 years ago when it wasn't that much in at that point. And I did ever since and I have been asked for the 3 first years to remove it from the programming, it made us loose money and the b boys on top of this were against a company trowing the event thinking we made money
Regardless of the sport vs. dance divide, we can't pretend it's not a competition, because even in cyphers when people are really showing love, it's still a competition. All art is an unspoken competition between creative people that want it to evolve. Who here doesn't want to best their idols or even friends? Competition doesn't have to be about money.
Gymnastics has lost some of its elegance through the years due to all the crazy twists and flips. Same might go with bboying. The "sport" version of bboying might be so big that winning is focused on athleticism rather than finesse. That the underground by most people will be overlooked. I feel was legz is saying. This has to be recognized and treated as dance first and foremost.
I think it is great to open up these issues, I feel that a few of the people speaking didn't consider in-depth before making comments, these need to be brought to light more to see what criteria needs to survive. First and foremost will always be dancing over money making, I really felt that comment, you shouldn't be in it for the money. But commercialism has its ups and downs and there are always going to be rights and wrongs within it for the b-boying community
Lets not loose sight of the fact that the competition aspect started to settle beef. Prize funds were implemented to try and add insentive. B-boys paying other B-boys through entry fee raised prize funds. Away for us to take care of our own and show respect to those who deserved it, from one week to the next. They doing it big over seas and still keeping it real, so can we. UNIFY, ORGANIZE, CAPITALIZE....all of us or none of us!!!
The fact that legz is in this with a Redbull hat on is ironic. We can share ourselves with the world, make an honest living, and still keep our foundation beneath us. All we need to do is continue doing our own thing. We've held ourselves up so far! Strife TV with a Pepsi commercial not cool, Strife TV with a NBW commercial cool as a fan, see what I'm sayin. YO JUNI HARAMBEEE SUUUUUN!!!!!!!!
breakdancing shouldn't be categorize in sports. sports nowadays are all about winning, recognition and money. just because there's athletic(ism) in breakdancing doesn't mean it's a literal sport. people who makes commercial use breakdancing as a tool to make money or for their products to be known and bought. they need a commercial to spread the culture while making money off of it? lol
i see your point, but if im in a battle, id try to win; and try to get my name famous out there xD; but yeah, commercial use in breaking might kill it
Sports have rules with concrete objective winners. In basketball, you score the most points. In gymnastics, you get the high score based on deductions that are fairly standardized, the moves have difficulty ratings. In the mile run, you get the best time. Bboying is subjective, hence art, hence a competition, not a sport. I love it, but it's better for not being a sport and has no place in the Olympic games.
Imo, if it goes to a sport, people will just do the moves for entertainment, like skateboarding; they just do flips, grabs and spins and shit its cool and all that and then you won't really see the point of foundation and feelin the music; which is a huge thing. This is freedom. you can find your own style.
awesome job strife, i love the rawness and how real these interviews are and im waiting for the entire interview series coming up. Thanks Strife, keep it really real =]
I'm all for people becoming monetarily successful, but why all the talk of bringing corporations in? X them out and keep that money within. Become your own corporations, it will take longer, but the scene will stay authentic and the actual participants will stay in control (i.g. Bbys, DJs, Promoters).
For example, I often hear people saying bboying should be shown on ESPN, and all I can think is why? It's like begging to get taken out of the equation. We have mediums like strife already.
but i mean it would be cool if it would be like a dance only channel and then as a sub-channel strife tv which is related to bboying! because otherwise it wont get so many viewers.
if you look up "sport" in the dictionary it will give you this. noun..."an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature" verb..."to amuse oneself with some pleasant pastime or recreation" bboying is a sport... the whole learn your roots shit always pissed me off... who invented basketball, baseball, football? who were the first teams? Can you still call yourself a player of these sports if you don't know the answer those questions?
foundation is key, it isn't always about the moves, i agree with that but, is knowledge of where the move came from and when it was first done and who was the first to preform it a prerequisite for bboying? stop trying to define breakdancing. stop telling people what bboying is and isn't and just breakdance.
so if i go to a battle and i get smoked by someone and i go out and learn all the history about breaking from all the old school cats and have a rematch with the same guy that beat me before do you think i will now be able to win the battle because i know my roots? did Ali, Shane Mosley Or Tyson know who the first boxers where? No. does that make him any less of a boxer? No. The same can be said about any other athletes for any other sport.
we are artists and dancers setting the next generations to come, thats why theres this big debate,
true through time there will be changes, but that doesnt mean the very foundation and roots of this art should be forgotten through everything.. thats what the pioneers are trying to do in documenting the history through movies like 'the freshest kidz,' to remember lives that should not be forgotten cause without them we would not be dancing today
you got a point concerning the boxers and no they're not any less of a boxer even though they might not know the full history of boxing(although i'm pretty sure they do). However i think we're talking about bboying becoming a sport or not, which basically comes back to saying "is bboying all about powermoves" in my opinion...i mean u can learn all the fundamentals n history n culture of bboying and still be a powermover, and that still doesn't make u a good all round bboy, just makes of u a gymnast
i'm with Kwikstep and Julz, the whole NBA and And 1 example makes perfect sense, this definitely has the potential to be a sport ovbiously, but its all on who handles it, not just the sponsors or bboys but everyone thats gonna get involved, NY/original bboys say it best all the time, its all about community
I loved this interview, my guess is that the new judging system may make "ignorant" people aware of some of the aspects of bboying, and therefore watch and enjoy these battles in a more "respectful" (I mean they know it's just not about cool moves anymore) way. I definitely agree saying its a "dance sport", where it's the probably the dance you have to train the most for.
I gotta go with KwikStep on that if people focus too much on the moves, that's gonna be a problem. It'll be too commercial and people will forget the roots.
I'm all for being able to live off bboying, which would be anyone's dream (making a living off something you really love). But it annoys me to see how people can be so ignorant of the history of it, and its culture.
I'll say its more of a dance than a sport. Can you feel the madness going through people's heads, as they rock it?
i find it ironic crazy legs says its not a sport and yet is wearing a red bull hat. red bull doesnt sponsor anything not considered a sport. i personally havent decided if its a sport or not..but im def believing it can be seen as both. i dont see why it has to be one vs another. if we say its both we can reap the benefits of both worlds.
For the immense hours of practice people put in they deserve to get recognition or payed. And the horrible part about that is dancers hardly get paid little to nothing anyway. I think people honestly think wayyy to much. As long as you do what YOU love it doesn't matter how other people approach it. Quite frankly just shut up and dance...
But isnt that like.. living in a country and not knowing the history of your country that you live in. Thats why we learn about our history in schools.. I think it comes same to dancing. If you are a dancer and you love what you do. You should know your history and understand it more.
I totally agree with you however history is only so much. Yes it matters but you still gotta do what you do and innovate, and press forward to step it up. How well you know your history shouldn't justify what we do today, because in 30 more years from now what were doing RIGHT NOW will be history. At a jam or a cypher nobody looks at the bboy and says" Oh he knows about crazy legs and frost freeze". The knowledge of history is kinda all up to the individual, but we still gotta move forward.
There's no problem with it being a sport. I've always envied how skateboarders can be so professional and actually make a living off of it eventhough it started as a hobbie for kids who liked it so much. This should be the same for bboy. Not everyone can be Crazy legs and make a living off of breaking. If anything, making bboy a sport is doing more of a favor to truly devoted bboys, who want to do it for life.
its gonna happen sounds like they already have something in the works for the future you know the exposure has slowly been out in the public already and people know its been around for a while i think its just getting more popular over the years
SPORT: "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature"
DANCE: "to move one's feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps"
ART: "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance"
I think bboying is combination of dance, sport, and art. It will go in the direction as long as it's in the hands of the right people...people who are actual bboys or actually understand it. sponsors or bullshit corporate people who don't know jack shit about it most the time shouldn't be apart of it
i make a living out being a bboying but i try to stay true to the culture as much as possible.
For me bboying is the ultimate dance/sport and to do u got to be an actual athlete coz u need to train every part of ur body. steve at 6:47 says it all.
bboying is a dance which is an art. when an art becomes a sport its essence is destroyed. if bboying goes commercial it will be purely power. Lets be honest when u started bboying the only thing u could watch was power, only when u really looked deep into the dance did u find that foundation is esential. if bboying goes commercial no one will want to watch foundation and the companies will only stream power. if bboying is financially backed it should be by bboy companies like R-16 and BOTY
all i know is ima stay true to wat i think bboy means to mi and thats to evolve and inspire even though i do like to do tricks and stuff i still like dancing to and top rokcing so ima fuse both like crazy legs said cause i wanna keep rocking and flipping for alone time
For me its a dance, and will always be... thats the way it started , why turn it into a sport... wanna show it, show it by dancing.. just my opinion peace
Kwikstep is old school, but he seems very educated and open to change. Respect to him!

i don't care how and what you define it
its the MUSIC
bring THE MUSIC BEAT TO BEAT, LYRIC TO LYRIC, MELODY TO MELODY into a physical form with whatever you got
and have fun while doing it
that's all there is to it

And at the same time, you talk of support in the community when between each other ( promoters) often, it is not like that. I had plenty of promoters in my town who come and compete with my event the same week, using the dancers I pay the flights for, etc and I already make no money with the event.
A user is a mentality, you find it , yes, in large coprporations, but in the b boy world as well. And if people who do not understand b boys should be set aside, why ask them to be your sponsors ?
JFLBattleJPR 1 year ago
( continuing ) I never made money, I lost some though, yes. did it ever occur to you to look at how amny theatres in NY program dance ? Maybe it is not something that the largest part of the population pay to see, so less money for presenters AND producers AND dancers, for that matter. I had skate and extreme sports competitions as well, Guys find their own sponsors, show up, pay to register, do their thing and leave after a good event. B boys ask and ask for airfaires, hotels, food money, etc,
JFLBattleJPR 1 year ago
I have to comment on the b boys who always complain that large corporations are always trying to use them. Don't know where this idea came from in their head. i work for a large company and convinced them to bring a b boy event 8 years ago when it wasn't that much in at that point. And I did ever since and I have been asked for the 3 first years to remove it from the programming, it made us loose money and the b boys on top of this were against a company trowing the event thinking we made money

The only part i see as a sport are the competition battles. That's the only part i see it as a sport. When it all goes down, it's still a dance.
Nothing's going to change my opinion about it. and if you're gonna look at it as a sport, the whole dance will lose it's meaning.

magicdice1000 1 year ago

This has to be recognized and treated as dance first and foremost.
xpreshun 1 year ago
I think it is great to open up these issues, I feel that a few of the people speaking didn't consider in-depth before making comments, these need to be brought to light more to see what criteria needs to survive. First and foremost will always be dancing over money making, I really felt that comment, you shouldn't be in it for the money. But commercialism has its ups and downs and there are always going to be rights and wrongs within it for the b-boying community
InfiniteStyleCrew 1 year ago
Lets not loose sight of the fact that the competition aspect started to settle beef. Prize funds were implemented to try and add insentive. B-boys paying other B-boys through entry fee raised prize funds. Away for us to take care of our own and show respect to those who deserved it, from one week to the next. They doing it big over seas and still keeping it real, so can we. UNIFY, ORGANIZE, CAPITALIZE....all of us or none of us!!!
franticmotionz 1 year ago
The fact that legz is in this with a Redbull hat on is ironic. We can share ourselves with the world, make an honest living, and still keep our foundation beneath us. All we need to do is continue doing our own thing. We've held ourselves up so far! Strife TV with a Pepsi commercial not cool, Strife TV with a NBW commercial cool as a fan, see what I'm sayin. YO JUNI HARAMBEEE SUUUUUN!!!!!!!!

my friends said "Breaking is amazingness defined." and "Bboying is a sport where you dance in order to create an amazing form of art" hahaha
koreanNeenja 1 year ago
breakdancing shouldn't be categorize in sports. sports nowadays are all about winning, recognition and money. just because there's athletic(ism) in breakdancing doesn't mean it's a literal sport. people who makes commercial use breakdancing as a tool to make money or for their products to be known and bought. they need a commercial to spread the culture while making money off of it? lol
demolitionkrew 1 year ago
i see your point, but if im in a battle, id try to win; and try to get my name famous out there xD; but yeah, commercial use in breaking might kill it
koreanNeenja 1 year ago
Sports have rules with concrete objective winners. In basketball, you score the most points. In gymnastics, you get the high score based on deductions that are fairly standardized, the moves have difficulty ratings. In the mile run, you get the best time. Bboying is subjective, hence art, hence a competition, not a sport. I love it, but it's better for not being a sport and has no place in the Olympic games.
seymourglass26 1 year ago
This is soo pointless. It's called "BreakDANCING" not "Breaksporting" lol

Imo, if it goes to a sport, people will just do the moves for entertainment, like skateboarding; they just do flips, grabs and spins and shit its cool and all that and then you won't really see the point of foundation and feelin the music; which is a huge thing. This is freedom. you can find your own style.

AlexFebre 1 year ago
thats what we're trying not to let die, the roots, the art, the culture
the pioneers of this culture gave up there lives,
the history needs to be honored and remembered
you would feel the same if you were one of the originals who invented bboying and your friends died due to the hardships at that time.
please dont be ignorant about not needing to know your roots shit
this is why they're scared will happen if it becomes a sport
the art, or culture will die,
so please just keep that in mind
Jonny4Lyfe 1 year ago
so if i go to a battle and i get smoked by someone and i go out and learn all the history about breaking from all the old school cats and have a rematch with the same guy that beat me before do you think i will now be able to win the battle because i know my roots? did Ali, Shane Mosley Or Tyson know who the first boxers where? No. does that make him any less of a boxer? No. The same can be said about any other athletes for any other sport.
AlexFebre 1 year ago
no you dont see the point that i am trying to make,
i did not say knowing the roots will make you improve,
im saying that know the background to this art,
the pioneers deserve to be credited and known for the life they gave to making bboying what it is today.
the history and everything, the roots of this unique art form, and its ignorant to say that learning your roots is stupid or shit like that.
the art and culture is dying because people are thinking this,
Jonny4Lyfe 1 year ago
Also we are not just any other athletes,
we are artists and dancers setting the next generations to come, thats why theres this big debate,
true through time there will be changes, but that doesnt mean the very foundation and roots of this art should be forgotten through everything.. thats what the pioneers are trying to do in documenting the history through movies like 'the freshest kidz,' to remember lives that should not be forgotten cause without them we would not be dancing today

This has been flagged as spam show
please dont respond instinctively;
just take a moment to think about it,
bboying cannot be compared to other sports, like the ones you have stated above
sure its has sport aspects
but its an artform.
the roots are very important to the dance as the art it self,
if the roots and foundation of dance are forgotten...
the TRUE art of bboying and hip-hop itself will die.
Jonny4Lyfe 1 year ago
you got a point concerning the boxers and no they're not any less of a boxer even though they might not know the full history of boxing(although i'm pretty sure they do). However i think we're talking about bboying becoming a sport or not, which basically comes back to saying "is bboying all about powermoves" in my opinion...i mean u can learn all the fundamentals n history n culture of bboying and still be a powermover, and that still doesn't make u a good all round bboy, just makes of u a gymnast

i'm with Kwikstep and Julz, the whole NBA and And 1 example makes perfect sense, this definitely has the potential to be a sport ovbiously, but its all on who handles it, not just the sponsors or bboys but everyone thats gonna get involved, NY/original bboys say it best all the time, its all about community
wwe2dragon 1 year ago

FFmaxx 1 year ago
OK they're talking about 30 years ago though...
Today is today.
For the immense hours of practice people put in they deserve to get recognition or payed. And the horrible part about that is dancers hardly get paid little to nothing anyway. I think people honestly think wayyy to much. As long as you do what YOU love it doesn't matter how other people approach it. Quite frankly just shut up and dance...
foxboy212 1 year ago 3
@foxboy212
But isnt that like.. living in a country and not knowing the history of your country that you live in. Thats why we learn about our history in schools.. I think it comes same to dancing. If you are a dancer and you love what you do. You should know your history and understand it more.
34yoo34 1 year ago
I totally agree with you however history is only so much. Yes it matters but you still gotta do what you do and innovate, and press forward to step it up. How well you know your history shouldn't justify what we do today, because in 30 more years from now what were doing RIGHT NOW will be history. At a jam or a cypher nobody looks at the bboy and says" Oh he knows about crazy legs and frost freeze". The knowledge of history is kinda all up to the individual, but we still gotta move forward.
foxboy212 1 year ago
There's no problem with it being a sport. I've always envied how skateboarders can be so professional and actually make a living off of it eventhough it started as a hobbie for kids who liked it so much. This should be the same for bboy. Not everyone can be Crazy legs and make a living off of breaking. If anything, making bboy a sport is doing more of a favor to truly devoted bboys, who want to do it for life.
Turdgenocide 1 year ago

I think bboying is combination of dance, sport, and art. bboying is a dance which is an art. when an art becomes a sport its essence is destroyed. if bboying goes commercial it will be purely power.
