Never get tired of my old pal Neil--been w/ him since the beginning (from Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, Crazy Horse and all the solo years)This is probably one of my fave of all his tunes (though it's hard to chose--everything he did was great)I always said Canada gave us some of the greatest ppl in music : Neil, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, Joni Mitchell, Geddy Lee and the guys in Rush...and never to forget, Gordon Lightfoot.

With all due respect,

Neil wrote the song in memory of his first car, a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse.

If you have listened close to all the lyrics:"With your chrome heart shining, in the sun, long may you run," as in, long may your engine keep running.

But, I can see how people could interpret the song to wish a graduating class long and prosperous lives.

Had I attended the commencement, I would have smiled from beginning to the end, knowing the true meaning.

But, having said that, it's nice that people feel that they identify with this song for all sorts of personal reasons, regardless (and unknowing) of its true origins.

One song can mean many different things to many people. At the end, there may only be one thing we really all have in common when listening .. It's when it reaches and touches all of us and communicates strongly.

But, know what...? I know that you know this too !

Even though I heard Neil in a recent interview talking about a few scientist's, staying at his ranch, trying to develop a part water, and gas fueled 1956? V-8 engine car, I always think of close friends when I hear this song.
