@billbaylis I'd believe 40-50 pictures is a sweet spot, but I've gotten decent results with far fewer depending on my goals. As for the export formats, I see the following: DWG, FBX, RZI, OBJ, IPM and LAS. I'm not familiar with all of them, but I believe OBJ and DWG are nearly-universally supported. I'd be surprised if Cinema4D couldn't import OBJ for example.
It was definitely head movement. Fewer is actually better here because I'm pretty sure that no one would be able to sit still enough for 81 images, hence the distortion, and photos not lining up properly.
@ebwje Thanks - I'm still looking for the sweet spot in terms of photographs of a person. An earlier attempt with about 20 pictures failed even worse, but in looking back at the pictures I was close to a blank white wall in that set. This time, I was surrounded by textured surfaces which probably made stitching easier. However, as you note it is really hard not to move over that length of time. I'm hoping to have a third video ready to post in the near future.
we had to do some 3d-portraits for university, and everyone had problems with the back of the head. It helped to apply some adhesive markers (you can retouch them afterwards) :)
has anyone heard of what happened to photo-modeler lite? it used to be able to develop 3-d models from pics.

Hi there I heard 40 to 50 pictures gives the best result.
What files can you output as. Can it output as C4D or 3DS for example?
