keep at it, i started blacksmithing over a year and half ago and i started out like this. Keep working and soon enough you will be decently skilled maybe even get a real anvil some hammer and tongs and you will be set. It's good to see people interested in such old crafts keep it alive man.
the katana is the traditional SHORT sword of the two... it doesn't have but a very gentle curve to the blade due to the fact that the sword doesn't have the driving force to cut through bone if it is curved... the Japanese practice metal folding like it's their religion and that helps to stiffen the blade's spine.... this isn't even a passable reproduction.... call it a sword and you're safe... call it a katana... you're an idiot
@dean120028@dean120028 excuse me? do some research before accusing me of not knowing what i'm talking about. Then you'd realize that i am correct. I know that i'm going to catch it for referencing a wiki page since it can be changed by anyone, but check out wikipedia sometime and search for katana
and where do you get off calling me kid? nothing i said even somewhat resembles the typing of a kid. unless you're looking at the no caps thing, which means you should join the club.... kid...
n modern times the most commonly known type of Japanese sword is the katana, which is a single-edged and usually curved long sword traditionally worn by samurai from the 15th century onwards.[1][2][3] Other types of Japanese swords include: tsurugi or ken, which are a double-edged sword,[4] ōdachi, nodachi, tachi, which are older styles of a very long single-edged sword, wakizashi, a medium sized sword, and the tanto which is an even smaller knife sized sword .
Although they are pole-mounted weapons, the naginata and yari are considered part of the nihontō family due to the methods by which they are forged.[5]
Article straight from your said source. I am a smith my self and have spent hours studying japanese sword making. As well as other metal works not including swords. Shouldn't be bashing on this guy because he wants to do something most people don't do anymore.
@dean120028 you idiot.... you didn't read that whole article did you? "While the "sugata" or form can take many shapes, including double edged, the term is now used incorrectly to describe nihontō that are 2 shaku (606 mm / 24 in) and longer, also known as "dai" or "daito" among Western sword enthusiasts." INCORRECTLY... it says so right there..... longer than 24 inches... that's not very long there bud.... and if you've truly studied japanese sword making then you'd know that
@dean120028 the spine is the driving force of the weapon. I'd love to see your soft spine cut through bone like a real samurai sword does.
I'm not bashing the fact that this guy wants to blacksmith. I'd love to have the ability to blacksmith (living in town, the neighbors wouldn't like the noise) but I AM bashing on the method and the naming it a katana.
@MonoxideChild1219 its surtenly steel, aluminium would not colourise like that, and its sounds difrent when you hit on it. btw it is indeed a crapy sword.
hahaha man nice makeshift hammer, couldnt you have gotten another hammer though? nice job anyway, once i get a camera ill send some of my swords ive made
very nice kid...and really he's right, dont listen to thos fucks...they dont know what they are talking about...to tell you the truth, im not really 21 as said so in my page, im 15 lol....so you probebly got a new friend if you want....lol..
lol and my page says im 21 too... but im actually 14....lolz its only because i got sick of videos getting blocked for retarded reasons XD (there was nothing bad in them, I assure you :) )
it dosent matter weather your a kid or not if u suck u suck. people always down play kids thinking that all kids are the same. this kid isnt like those kids out there who say that they made a wepon when all they made was a broken pen that shoots ineffective airsoft bbs. this kid actually made a make shift forge and did somthing with it. however he didnt think hard enough to get a leaf spring from a car which is very strong steel. heated it and hammered it strait. and thanhammer on an edge. D+
Next time: use a hamer and something that at least looks like an anvil. Get the right heatproof bricks to build your forge and get some info on the coals. + don't call it a katana if you make it from scrap metal, its an insult to the tradition of japanese blacksmithing. On the other hand, its a nice hobby, keep up the good work! Inform yourself, you could really end up hurting yourself if you don't know what you are doing.
wow man thats awesom, is yur "furnace" using only wood? cuz i heard wood doesnt burn hot enough, plz tell me how yu did it cuz i can't seem to find coal anywhere for purchase, and nice looking blade
Hey there, yeh I'm only using wood :) and how did you know?! I could get LOTs of coal from the beach because our city is the largest exporter of coal in Australia. If you'd like to use coal go to your local hardware store and look in the BBQ section. THANKS 4 YOUR COMMENT!
this brings me back 3 years ago when i became fascinated with bladesmithing. you could practise shaping a blade using flat stock, hot-rolled mild steel, and just cold forge it without a forge. that's how i practiced with mine. i'll be ordering a gas forge soon so i can work with my real tools. let yourfire burn bright.
bravo... continua così.

@drewidic Also, the Mune (spine) is meant to be softer than the edge. Not hardened, that's where the hamon comes into play.
