  • Starring the Hades summon from Final Fantasy VII.

  • The name of the spell is actually Rune of Torment, as seen in the description. Symbol of Torment is the name of the item used.

  • What is Planescape??

  • @The666Disciple A miserable little pile of secrets.

  • Completely unreliable sources tell us that this guy is the DM.

  • @Kizor he's just some guy the devs thought looked cool.

  • Troika produced Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines which was an absolutely amazing RPG, extremely underrated and unheard of.

Unfortunately it has to be pointed out that Black Isle was greater than the sum of its employees. They may have moved en masse elsewhere but it'll never be the same.

  • What's the name of the music playing during this? Does it only play during this sell?

  • wherea did you guys find this game at `-`

  • Too bad you can only get this spell when you are near the end of the game, and you don't even need to fight the final boss too, you can reason with him or trick him to end the game.

What other game lets you talk your way out of a final boss fight?!?

  • @TriasTheBetrayer

I think all the Fallout series.

  • Arcanum also offers you the option to finish the Big Bad with words instead of violence. It was made by Sierra, like the Fallout games.

  • @MechagirlSachiko No, it was developed by Troika, which consisted of most of the Black Isle staff, which had made Fallouts 1 and 2 and Torment.

  • Oops! My bad.

  • @TerrorBlack Troika were Black Isle? What is it about those people and making awesome underrated games that get cut down & screwed by executives and then going out of business?

  • @Cunnysmythe Yeah, it is kind of a running theme, huh? Most of Black Isle left to found Troika. I know Chris Avellone, who designed Fallout 2 and Torment and wrote most of the text in the latter, ended up at Obsidian, and at least they still seem to be healthy and producing good games.

  • @TerrorBlack It still seems to apply, bar the going out of business thing. KOTOR 2 could have been so much more if they hadn't been rushed to finish for Christmas. It must be incredible to know Avellone in person, though. The subtle nuances in his storytelling are incredible. Growing a character through dialogue. Great stuff.

  • @Cunnysmythe err, I don't know him in person, I just know he ended up at Obsidian. Sorry about the split clause. heh

  • @Cunnysmythe Some key people went to set up Troika (Anderson, Cain, Boyarsky), the bulk of employees at BI went to Obsidian.

  • In a sense, Mass Effect and the first Fallout game. Realy, I don't understand why that isn't an option in more RPGs.

  • arcanum...

  • Best spell ever!

    OH SHI--

  • The description is really what makes it.

You've lived and died thousands of times. Not one of those lives could be considered happy and peaceful, I'd wager. Hell, the crazy incarnation tears his own arm off to beat you with it in some circumstances.

So yeah. "getting its shit ruined" is a good description

  • Fun Fact: According to some fansites, the person standing at the cauldron... is supposedly the Dungeon Master who's running your little adventure...

  • so FUKKEN AWESOME!

    PAIN!!!!

  • Imagine what that would look like if it was done with today's graphics!

  • hmm how did you managed to get that spell that early in the game ? didnt you get it just before The Transcendent One on the top of Fortress of Regrets ?

  • holy shit!

  • Fuckin' incredible.

  • HOLY FUCK

  • best spell effect in any game ever.

  • Hmm, I dont recall the movie with the guy throwing magic into a cauldron. Don't you just get the symbol appearing on the ground and everyone else falling down?

Must be too long since I played.

  • Personally id have preferred it with him just drawing the badass symbol and everything getting its shit ruined.

  • I frickin' loved that spell and I frickin' loved that game. I never really got the chance to use it on The Transcendent One as I actually defeated him through dialogue. What other games can claim a final boss that can be defeated through reason, eh?

  • @officialac In Fallout 1 you can point out how flawed the bad guy's plan is to the point where he'll nuke himself.

  • @officialac

well fallout... but yeah I know what you mean:)

  • @officialac arcanum.

  • @officialac

The same games that can claim that you can talk people out of existence by logically reasoning them into unbelieving themselves.

  • @officialac Fallout 1, for starters (which preceded this game). Another BI classic.

  • @officialac

In fact, I know of at least two - Fallout 1 and Lionheart. (Spoilers up ahead.) And while Fallout can really be claimed to be a true RPG both combat- and dialogue-wise, so that being able to talk the Master into nuking himself is nothing strange, Lionheart is just your average Diablo-like hack'n'slash game with lots of wasted potential. Defeating the final boss with Speech isn't really Torment-specific, but it is indeed very specific in Torment.

  • @officialac Arcanum for example :) but yeah, the game has to be 2001 and lower in the release date...

  • @officialac Fallout 1 =D

  • Spells in this game are awesome. Not like in alot of other rpgs I've played where a lv10 fire spell still looks the same as a lower level fireball just slightly bigger.

  • in a interview one of the producers was asked who the lich who casts the spell was and he said it was just sommthing they tought would look cool =)

  • Overkill.

  • How could you use it in Baator?

You get it near the climax of the game don't you

(SPOILER: After talking with 3 of your incarnations and using Pharod's yellow sphere)

  • I used a mod to show you what happens when used on regular monsters.

  • My game crashes when I use this spell against Transcenedent One.

  • WTF??I finished PET but i've never het this spell??HOW CAN I GET IT!!!!

  • I think you rip it out of your own skin when you talk with one of your three selves.

  • Ouch.

  • awesoooome

  • Normally it takes the whole game...and you need to play with real involvement to get it, so it must be worth it...besides it is Torment, it just cannot be wrong.

  • Hmm, one of best spells... :D

  • Rune of Torment... Video cool, hex workshop cool... hehe.
