I love this Scarpia. The only problem I have is he's too sexy! If I was Tosca, in this production, I would have taken up Scarpia on his offer. Forget that Cavaradossi, who paints portraits of other women. ;-)
Definitely a very interesting Scarpia, I hope he continues singing this role. See Ruggero Raimondi's Scarpia and I think you'll really feel that Tosca should choose him over Cavaraddossi.
This baritone has a great voice for the sacristan or for Sciarrone, BUT NOT FOR SCARPIA!! Neither Wixell nor Stabile had a particularly "meaty" baritone, but they both had an instrument appropriate for Scarpia and used what they had well. This singer just does not have Scarpia in him, much less (to look at his repertory) Macbeth or Count di Luna or Rodrigue or Amonasro - OR THE VERDI REQUIEM MASS!!!!!
Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Macbeth, Turandot, Tosca, La Bohéme, Otello, Il Trovatore, Don Carlos, Aida, Nabucco, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni{Don Giovanni and Leporello}, Mozart and Salieri, Maometto Secondo, Il Turco in Italia, IV. Murat, The Tales of Hoffmann, Magic Flute, Carmen, Evita, Mozart "Requiem", Verdi "Messa da Requiem" and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
He has studied voice with Dan Iordacescu, Daniel Ferro, Leyla Gencer, and Licinio Montefusco. He has sung a wide repertoire of both concert music and opera from the 17th century to contemporary music both in Turkey and abroad.
...1987: Treviso, Italy won first prize as the best ""Sparafucile"
...has been honored as "knight" by Italian Government for his outstanding contributions to opera.
i dont think there is anything left to say about the performance of the chorus or the soloist or the orchestra, they are all pretty good.
what i also liked was the minimal decorations and the costumes. despite all odds and insufficient support i think turkish opera still maintains a high profile. wish there would be more resources dedicated to them, specially the young generation of performers, i am sure the outcome would be brilliant!
Her izlediğimde Puccini´´nin bu rolü Suat Arıkan için bestelediğini düşünüyorum.Sahne enerjisi ve mükemmel yorumu için defalarca izlediğim videolardan.Tebrikler bir kez daha Suat Arikan..
Got the feeling that sometimes he rushing a bit. But defenitly a greatperformance, stunning voice, fitted the Scarpia role. Even if the Stage was a little under whelming and didnt seem to fit in. Good performance though

@winedirt Yeah, I feel the same way about Sam Ramey as Scarpia. Any Cavaradossi loolks like dogfood next to Ramey.

To Mertsungu: This is a great video! Do you have video clips from the rest of this performance--like Act.2, for example? Please let me know here.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to seeing more--especially the Torture Scene from Act 2 (and the whole Act 2, if possible, will be fantastic).

Wow - this must be one of the sexiest Scarpias I've ever seen! :-)
Is there any more material from that production? I'd sure like to see the rest.
Great orchestra too, and they've done well not to overcrowd the little stage with too big a procesion.
