This cannot be understood literally and indeed it is fraught with underlying meaning which requires deciphering. Heterosexuality may be viewed as the opiate of the masses in the sense that it is strongly normative and it creates or it is rooted in sexism, in discrimination and as such it despises other lifestyles, it creates intolerance etc.

The establishment of heterosexuality as the only acceptable sexual orientation and as the sole norm is made to direct people and prevent them from expressing their real self and CHOOSE what they really want to be.

This is why what the girl is saying is highly political.

Now, mark my word, the problem is not heterosexuality in itself but the "values" it promotes: heterosexuality (or rather heterosexism: wh often goes algside blatant or unavowed and unconscious homophobia and plain sexism) can and is to be envisaged the opiate of the masses just as religion (Marx) because thx to it, the State or sct can keep u at bay: they dictate who you can love, with whom u are allowed to sleep.
