Sex, is not sin. However, the kind of sex depicted on the outer walls of this temple is certainly sin. That's the method used to draw contrast. The insides of the temple are bare and plain, to symbolise internal purity. The carvings outside were intended to be vulgar.

I differ a bit. Not with the intent of criticising, just placing the record right...In prachin India, sex was not considered unnatural, we thought it was aesthetic and there were no psychological baggage with trying different positions etc...In fact Kalidasa has written very erotic poetry on Kali Devi's Breasts!
