Enrico Rosati was Gigli's voice coach. When he first heard Lanza he wept, saying he had never thought he'd hear the like again. Lanza spent a year under his tutelage. Rosati said that Mario Lanza had one of the most beautiful voices he had ever heard . He said that he had an exuberant character, but also that he was very generous and amiable with a great heart, which was evident in the way that he sang. The choice then is a personal one. What is the point in bitter word battles here ...
I adore Mario Lanza and I consider his voice as one of the best of the past century. However, no singer’s voice is suitable for everything. This song, as well as “Drigo-Serenade” and many other calls for a skilled lyric belcanto voice, like Gigli’s, a real maestro of belcanto. Lanza couldn’t sing belcanto. I agree with operabeauty. This delivery of “Toselli's Serenade” is too … hollywoodian for my taste.
@Aetion Just enjoy the magnificetn voice, it is a matter of taste. Remember that this was Mario Lanza, and he was not a classically trained singer, and they classicist tend to be to closed-minded. Do you wonder why today Pavarotti and others sung with pop stars?
@gnossticc No, I don’t. As I already told, I adore Mario Lanza. Nevertheless, I couldn’t but agree with operabeauty for the reasons already explained. I don’t think it’s simply a matter of taste to hear a song or an aria calling for a lyric belcanto voice sung the way ML does. I am not sure I understand what do you mean that “classicist tend to be to closed-minded”, but I doubt whether it has some thing to do with the matter. OK, just keep enjoying ML, as I do, he is worth it.
For me Mario Lanza was the greatest Tenor of the last century.
I'm raised with his songs of Granada, The Donkey Serenade & his Drinking Song.
I never heard another Tenos with the vibes in their voices like Mario good and did with all his songs. The Great Caruso, is for me a favourite movie, because he played that role with an attitude no tenor of this time can do without a microphone.
this man possessed the most beautiful tenor voice the almightly god ever gifted to any human being. it is our shame, and only ours, that we tortured him while he was alive and continue to justify our actions to this day. we accept bocelli as the "bridge" between opera and popular music. he cannot hold a candle to lanza.
I think I know why 5 people didn't like it. There was a missing chord between the F minor 7th 1st inv. and the E flat major chord root pos.. Anyone want to take a guess of what that chord may be?
@upajos Technically a soloist can only arpeggiate a chord. The chord I was looking for is g minor 1st inv. and it is played by the accompaniment not by the singer. I think one can see that it is obvious my friend
it has not escaped my notice that none of the "three tenors", in their many so-called tributes to lanza during their concerts, ever attempted to perform this piece. enough said.
In my opinion, Mario Lanza was, and most likely will remain, the tenor with the most beautiful voice that ever walked the earth. His soft, yet powerful, voice, together with his kind personality (this I know from my father, who knew him personally), will be forever cherished. Bravissimo.
@ThePCNovice you could not have expressed this ay better and i personally thank you for it. my father loved lanza, and this was his favorite piece of music, bar none. i have never heard a performance i like better than this. what a voice. what a talent. what a kind and sweet human being.
The most beautiful version of this I have ever heard is that sung by Fritz Wunderlich... arguably the most amazing tenor who ever sung. I cannot find it on YouTube.... but anyone who loves this song should try and find it and listen to it... It is stunning.
@cocoagirl61660 i have the greatest respect for wunderlich and many other european tenors. however, please allow me to offer this. his recorded performance of "toselli's serenade" is in german. how can you credit a "recognized" opera artist with the most beautiful version of a song that he chose NOT to perform in its original language? the album includes "be my love", an american song, sung in english with a very thick german accent. why was he so intent upon "responding" to lanza?
superb voice and very powerful and melodious. the background music and his voice are a perfect combination for this lovely song. this is what i call music. thanks yoni89 for uploading this song.
Gilgi was good, so was Caruso, Tucker, Bierling, Pavarotti, etc. etc but none compare to Mario, saw him in person when I was 17, 60 years later he is still the best of All time. No one has the ease, high C's or pitch as Mario, but then what the hell do I know...I never heard anyone like him since, sorry, hes God's voice.
@candyjoe1 thank you for using the word "ease" in your description. my father heard caruso live and always commented that the veins on his neck "exploded" as he reached for the high notes. he felt that lanza. on the other hand, always sang with "ease".
@candyjoe1 Oh yes-Lanza was a great Singer-one of the best the World has known.I saw all Movies with him. But in my Opinion Pavarotti was better-not much- but better then Lanza. His Volume of reaching high +low tones was much better.
I am a 22 year old Tech-head from Holland, listening to whatever music I can get my hands on. I have heard lots of Opera, Operette and the likes, yet.....this touches me.
Don't know what you are hearing but to me the first part is off key...and for most of this, the voice sounds forced, tight and he runs out of gas at the end of phrases.
Mario is Gods gift to all tenors today that what keeps his legend alive, he will always live for us in our hearts, so continue to make a tribute to Mario when you sing,
I just love Mario Lanza - in my opinion no one has come close to him - I have loved his singing for over 50 years now and my opinion has never changed.
@operabeauty True enough Lanza was a wonderful singer - but when I hear the likes of Tauber or Gigli singing the same song, Istart to wonder if possibly he was overrated?
He also showed the lack of ability, for instance, that Allen Jones had to deliver "Donkey Serenade"..........Although he may have been unwell when he recorded that.
@chinchonchinchon It.s relative , and a matter of perception. Remember the actual recording quality was far better for Lanza than anyone else ever in his style or class.
He was a lovely singer though - I love this song by any decent singer!
@Tobytrim Maybe you should listen to Gigli sing Mother Macri&My Rosary and let me know if he was overated.See if you can understand any of the words in English.Lanza's Italian is better than Gigli's English, by far.Maybe you just like the way Allen Jones sings,Donkey Serenade as I like the way Jimmy Durante sings (Where or When)
@sugarbist "Maybe you should listen to Gigli sing Mother Macri&My Rosary and let me know if he was overated"
I'm a fan of ALL those singers you mentioned.
I happen to know Mario's limitations on "Donkey Serenade" because I have performed it myself and I know how difficult it can be. I noticed where Lanza struggled with it and Allan Jones didn't.
Incidentally, I suggest you reserve judgement on the best performance of this song here, till you hear Tauber's version. It's excellent!!
@louvet66 E VERO, CADA GENIO Y TALENTO EN UN MOMENTO HISTÓRICO. GIGLI AHORA EL MEJOR TENOR DE LA HISTORIA Y LANZA GLORIOSO EN LOS CINCUENTA EN NORTEAMERICA Y PARTE DEL MUNDO. NO TUVO TANTA FORMACION Y ERA UN RUDO TRABAJADOR PERO SU POTENTE VOZ ERA INNATA NO CREADA.
@operabeauty i love gigli and consider him second only to lanza. he, like lanza, understood the beauty of these italian "popular" songs and knew how to sing them. i wish that he could have been afforded the chance to perform against the same beautiful orchestrations as lanza. also, you can hear that he is holding back the emotion he could have infused, but for his strict operatic training. just my opinion.
@operabeauty Listen to Lanza sing My Rosary. He wins ,hands down over Gigli.Gigli's english is terrible.Lanza's Italian is far more superior than Gigli;s English,
@crapfacejoe Dear Joe, My Rosary is a song & so is Mother Machree. The point I'm trying to make above is that Lanza's Italian is far better than Gigli Corelli DelMonaco Carreras& Domingo's english could ever hope to be .These tenors are just miserable when they sing in English, but you hardly see any criticism when they are doing so.
@sugarbist I agree. Lanza is king in English, Italian and Spanish, operatic or non-operatic songs. But Gigli is not that bad in English. I heard his silent night, although his diction lacks, his vocals are beautiful. I actually prefer it to Lanza's silent night. But you're right, on most of the English songs Lanza is untouchable.
@crapfacejoe Dear Joe, Do you have heat stroke?Someone does sing something better than Lanza coming from you?Try some Gatorade,it may help. Ofcourse I'm kidding.Enjoy
@operabeauty I think that in many things -- probably 'most' arias -- I woiuld agree with youi , that is, that Gigle has a dramatic edge... But not in this song. No way! This is the best rendering by far I know of this, Gigle notwithstanding!
@operabeauty I am with you, my preference is clearly for Gigli. . Gigli sings the Toselli like no singer who has ever lived. This is not to say Mr. Lanza is not pleasant but Gigli is sublime. Lanza had an interesting voice though and excels at emotionalizing his music. I prefer Gigli because he could use vocal color in ways that would bring out not only the romantic aspects but also humor and melancholy. If I may suggest listening to the same selection on You Tube, it does not disappoint.
your ignorant comment about Mario Lanza's voice was really not called for. Esp. since YOU don't seem to know, that most classical music is not "opera".
The Toselli serenade is a beautiful love song.
Your comment that he "brought opera to the "masses" is an insult, actually its laughable.

Muy buena tu respuesta.Coincido contigo.
My Dad was a big fan of mario lanza. WWe started off with only 2 LP records one was Carousel and the other The Student Prince. I knew all the songs word for word- thereby I developed a love for good music - I'm very grateful that I was introduced to Lanza at an early age. However I think I would have discovered Mario for myself.
Lanza is unbeatable and never better when he harnesses so obviously his enormous passion and talent to the maestro's baton... Moral: A raging bull in harness can produce such ecstatic sounds...
There is something funny to be said either of you or your husband, but I cannot think what it is... Every time I read your remark I cannot suppress a laugh... Thank you!

Thank you!
