saw this film when it came out, and as a young 16yo male, watched it through young white males glasses, and although I thought it shocking and wrong I would not and could not admit to my friends how I felt ... probably one of the best films ever to have been watched for the wrong reasons ... saw it uncut again 2 years ago, dated yes, but the film had more impact as a mature adult ... shame,is what I felt, not shame because of history, but shame of how I felt relatiing to my youth ...
@MrSkininks What you said really moved me - don't be too hard on yourself though because I was exactly the same - couldn't share my feelings with the people I went to see it with when I came out - I was so choked. I'm sure there were a lot of people who were the same.
It SHOULD be 15,000 years because that was the second and last time that Beringia land mass was exposed in the Bering Sea and the Indian people from Siberia crossed over to Alaska to hunt. That was the start of the migration that brought the Native Americans to the land now called the United States.
@computerrage I seem to recall her singing "50,000" years in more recent performances (but I need to double-check). The lyrics on her blog page say "15,000." She does change her lyrics sometimes (e.g., "Indian Cowboy...Rodeo": "big white hat" -----> "big black hat."
Yes, taught in every school, her own Native perception education program is wonderful, teaching there is another way to see and be a part instead of harming our greatest gift's for life, health and happiness.
At this time a wisdom so needed World Wide.

WOW! Haven't heard that for a long long time. Brought a lump to my throat. Please someone re-release this and make sure every American child hears and understands what it is about.
Fantastic and VERY moving (and daring at the time!) film, I really enjoyed that, and the lyrics of this song are somewhere in a higher realm, beautiful. However, being painfully honest, I do find the vocals a bit too strained (sorry!)
As a teenager in England, I saw Soldier Blue and was shocked by what I saw. Now, as a middle aged woman, I find myself still effected by this heartwrenching song which I haven't heard in over three decades. . A classic. 'Lest we forget.....'
The spanish did it in south american, the white europeans in North America, and don't forget the slavers and the african races...... don't they ever learn?
@DL11AZ I'm afraid that as long as we have "civilization," we'll have this sort of thing. My personal opinion is that civilization is an experiment that has failed--overwhelmingly.
What a powerful voice -incredible, I bought this in 1971, and I will never forgive or forget the way the Red Indian Tribes were treated by white people.
i understood when i sail across the atlantic sea 4 times in family matters, when is whas outerlesson (teenager). is about to bend down and be humiliate or is it humid
A real thrill to hear a different version of the song to the one that appears on 45/LP - though that one still wins out in terms of hair-raising passion.

Haunting, poetic and a masterpiece in it's own right. Native Americans should be part of the US government

I love this song but I always wonder, in both versions it sounds like the recording 'slips'. Is this a technique BSM uses while singing?
