What's really tricky about Iraq though is its muslim heritage so to speak. Not only the Shia- vs. Sunni-Islam, but also that there's going to be real efforts against a democracy, since a democracy comes from the people, not from God.. But we'll see how it develops.
Agreed, one of the few good things that came from this war is dethroning Hussein. I worry, though, about the way we "assume" everyone has to be democratic. We have a tendency of attacking those countries or shunning those ones who don't take our personal philosophies. Remember the domino theory? jenn, There is nothing ironic about it. YOU don't check these folks out. They want to pull out of the Middle East, that will abandon Israel. Ron Paul has said it is our policy that is the problem? What policy is that, support of Israel. If you look at the youtube pages of many of the Paul spammers, they are filled with anti-Jew remarks.

Personally, I feel that pulling out of the entire middle east would be a mistake. Afghanistan was the good fight. We should have never divided our forces. This war with Iraq has nothing to do with Israel, though. Bush's sentiment was that there were WMD's stockpiled there and that was a threat to the U.S. Note they never found such a stockpile. We've done our job...time to leave.

I understand Bloyer. Ron Paul seems to be saying "Let's pull out everywhere in the world and stop support for Israel, I'll apologize and everything will be fine!". Well, I don't think that will work in his, Israel's or "the West's" favour. Israel might be a lot stronger than when it was founded, but look what happened back then - at least 6 "muslim"-countries waged war against the new state of Israel. Without the backing of "the West" Israel surely won't have a good time over there.

You know, I actually find the idea of pulling out across the entire world a huge mistake. (enter your own gasp here) I know, I know....there is this infamous belief that people who are against the world in Iraq are peaceniks...but I'm not so blinded by my beliefs to not see reality. We are really needed in so many places, (some of which we completely ignore i.e. Sudan Darfur) pulling our support would only succeed in making us look more self centered and cold.

All I have to say about Darfur in case of the US is that I doubt that your citizens would like to see the US intefere anywhere right now, be it a peaceful mission or not. I think you got enough "on your plate" as it is.

So true. But it is unfortunate, because the real mission would be places such as that. Truth is, if Bush had gone on the TV, claiming the reason we were moving in is the genocide of Iraq's citizens - I probably would have backed it. There are certain "wrongs" that go against the morals of all humankind. It is then the world must unite against such atrocities. But I am just one person.

What's really tricky about Iraq though is its muslim heritage so to speak. Not only the Shia- vs. Sunni-Islam, but also that there's going to be real efforts against a democracy, since a democracy comes from the people, not from God.. But we'll see how it develops.

Agreed, one of the few good things that came from this war is dethroning Hussein. I worry, though, about the way we "assume" everyone has to be democratic. We have a tendency of attacking those countries or shunning those ones who don't take our personal philosophies. Remember the domino theory? I wonder if it is democracy and not communism that is taking over the planet.

Iraq might end up in a civil war...but doest that make it our problem? I think many forget that America had a civil war too. Let them work out their own problems now.

Anyway, I don't know but I don't think that "spreading democracy" was the first thing on their minds; but rather to exterminate the "breeding grounds" for people like the perpetrators of 9/11, be it in Afghanistan or then Iraq. Maybe they were mislead about "being greeted with open arms as liberators", I don't know.

Gordon: I am neither a Liberal or a Conservative. I am however, a Merchant Mariner who goes to Iraq quite regularly as part of my job delivering weapons and supplies for the troops there. And I assure you that most of them would get a giggle at your rather naive view of what happens "Over There" This is NOT 1944, and we are not fighting a "Good Fight" over in Iraq. Most of our troops would much rather be home than there. I think I will leave it at that.

Many are judging a person because of some preconceived label. Liberal and Conservative. What labels do is hide the fact that these groups are comprised of living, breathing people. Individuals who are unique and do not necessarily subscribe to these very narrow ideologies. It's wrong-and it's frightening.

As a "leftist" I have never...and will never call a soldier a baby killer or rapist. Those who do have absolutely no clue what these men and women sacrifice (not just physically but mentally) for the sake of our democracy. I will never say that our fighting men and women are lying about the war. I am sure that many of the "religious right" would take just as much offense if I lumped them in with those horrible people who stand outside of soldiers' funerals with signs.

What this gentleman is doing is grouping some random ideologies about our troops with the real feelings many have about our current administration. They didn't choose to go. That was our administration. Our troops are just trying to make the best of a horrible situation. I don't blame them one bit for trying to do that. You want to continue in Iraq? That's just fine. Isn't that the wonderful thing about this country? You can voice your opinion without fear of being persecuted for it.

Gordon, how can you compare WWI and WWII to the Iraqi War? Bush invaded Iraq providing false and inaccurate information to the American people. I have the highest respect for the troops serving in Iraq, away from their families during the holidays, while the chicken hawks eat turkey and open presents boasting how they support the troops. Support them by insisting to an end to the travesty in Iraq.

The current battle in Iraq is between Sunni, Shiite, and Kurd. It is distracting us from the real war on terror and the Bin Ladens of the world are relishing that fact. As we are preoccupied in Iraq they are safely planning the next real attack on the USA elsewhere.

Why didn't governor Bush keep us secure on 9-11? He had plenty of warnings (about 56 of them), but he FAILED to keep American citizens safe. Why can't we at least start investigating that? The 9-11 Commission wasn't able to get sworn testimony from either Bush or Cheney - they refused to say anything under oath. WHY??????

so, true, our military are literally peace marchers.. the US military is the most disciplined and restrained of all in performing duties, but Im starting to think the Iraqis are the most unworthy, back stabbing people in the world.. after our great soldiers have sacrificed and all the money we have put into that country they have now repaid us by awarding contracts to China and Iran for construction of their new power plants.. this miserable country is paying others when they owe us so much.
