  • simple livin bet theres some nice places to swim out there

  • Somewhere technology and greed took over and we stopped living within the harmony and balance of nature.

  • like the vid bro, I'm from Grundy Va. which is mainly coal miner and moonshiner country..lol and we were raised the same way. In fact I feel like pple lived longer than they do now cause of it. Yea it don't look like much, but its all they want or need.

  • This is how we grew up back home, and I miss it.

  • I just read a great book called Hillbilly Tales from The Smokey Mountains by P Graham and V Humphries!

  • This is a great video. I love those ole guys. They don't need anyone to survive. Never have to smell another stinking banker, or look at another politician again, I'd like move right out there with them and eat watermelon ever chance I got.

My people came to California from the dust bowl.

I know how to make some good cornbread, beans and fried chicken.

That spring water looks mighty appealing to me too.

Thank you for posting this, and next time you see them, tell them I said Hey.

  • @magprob best thing bout us mountain ppl is we dont need no1 for nothin cops dont tell us what 2 do we tell them what 2 do,we dont use grocery stores,i feel for you ppl that depend on these things bc ur in deep shiit if times go bad, while were alredy used to going without, hell no cell phonce get signal around here,so if u do come stay in the city of the country states bc u may get ate

  • @2:12 "Don't you fall in there man."

"I won't fall, you couldn't knock me down!"

    I love that guy.

  • I love it! A real life Boomhauer!

  • I bet this guy isn't in the carpenter's union. Je couldn't have sold that sled for a mere $10.00. It probably took him a week to make the dern thing!

  • @JDClampet347 who cares what it would sell for. money dont mean shit to that guy. he has everything he needs.

  • these men should help other americans learn how to live without a mall scamming them without a bank scamming them without a government scamming them these are real true men real life this is what freedom is wow

  • wow. this is fascinating. i can't even imagine what it must be like at night. no light, television, restaurants. i would go insane. it kind of reminds me of the people who lived in the walled city of kowloon. totally cut off from the rest of the world.

  • Where in the world did you find these guys ? I had no idea that anyone was still living this lifestyle. The last person I personally knew that lived similar he lived in an old school bus, never had electric or any modern conveniences, cooked outside over an open fire, best way in the world to cook soup beans.

  • haha a true legit hillbilly

  • Absolutely awesome man.

  • Reminds me a lot of the late 60's and early 70's of the few times I got to visit with old friends of the family. They didn't have much but what they had belonged to them and they were content. Always made you fill welcomed. I often miss those simple times.

  • HAHAHA he spit on that kids hand @ 55 seconds in and then the kid wiped it off on his pants 3 seconds later lol

  • @bigjohnson1014 lol so true

  • @bigjohnson1014 DUDE! I laughed SOOOOOO HARD!

  • @bigjohnson1014

  • DO SOMETHIN!spread organic heirloom food seed far and wide, its called"johnny appleseed economics"or"gorrila gardens"spread more organic food thanGMO and you will water down the effects and if everyone becomes self suffcient at their homes it will stopGMO right in its tracks,if there is enough people it will save our food system, thats how you win! wake up everyone,do your part if u are angry, get seed and SPREAD THE ORGANIC SEED EVERYWHERE TELL OTHERS

an army is only as strong as its stomach

  • @boxa888 no

  • no need to own a car and an ipod, but a toothbrush and a rag on a stick would go far!

Seems like a nice fellow though. Keep on keepin on.

  • when i grow up i wanna be a hillbilly

  • @Darklordkime I always wanted to be one myself. What you think our guidance counselors'd say about that? XD

  • What a wonderful life...no worries...

  • Same here. I plan on building a cabin by a stream or say a country wide disaster happens or if something not life threatening happens on 2012, I'll run up to the mountains in Montana or somewhere around Appalachia With my family and just live:) lol

  • I have a lot of modern technology, but I know I can live without it!! My Daddy & Momma did when I was little, so I know I have it in me!!

  • i always have the dream to run off into the wild.

  • Now the rich keep investing in big neigborhoods and mansions up in the mountain ans soon the mountains beauty will be ruined....I hate it when I go up here and see bunch of new houses built right beside a small wooden cabin that had been there for a long time. I had a cabin up here me and my family built about 55 years ago and now just 4 years ago they built a bunch of houses where there used to be woods and a nice stream. Now im ready to sell it since therse a fence 8 feet behind it.

  • That ain't nuttn I was in nam

  • You can come to Maine and find many characters like this. Most don't live this hard a life, but have learned to live off the land and require few modern convieniences. They are full of wisdom and can see things that most of us let pass by as we stare at our computer sceens, video games and TV's. Everbody should take time to walk in the woods and observe. The smallest acts in nature very often mimick our own.

  • I enjoyed all the appalachian video's. This is the good life beleive it or not. Alot of people are going back to the simple life since the economy has spiraled downward. This in turn may have been a blessing. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • poor cat broke 4 beers that sucks buddy ................. This is awesome.. holly smokes..

  • I imagine that Movie "True Grit" coulda been filmed right'chere. God Bless

  • kind of reminds me of Newfoundlanders.

  • look like american life back in 1700' ??????

  • 30 years from now all our history and heritage will be lost because more and more illegal aliens and legal immigrants. We don't need anyone else from a different country. It just washes out our heritage just a little bit more.

  • I couldn't understand him. Seems like a cool Grandpa. Can't imagine a person like him saying "no" to anyone.

  • He's got a nice setup.

  • long live the rednecks:)

  • This is truely amazing footage! A wonderful glimps at were it all began, and how it can still be sustained.

  • 1 word:amazing!!!

  • Now that old man is a TRUE redneck hillbilly mountain. I love it.

  • i agree with most of the comments,i would like to live like this, but i take it he has no family or kids?what is life without having love for your spose or kids or having family close?

  • Reminds me of my cousin.

  • Ok I could be wrong but the part were the guy with the beard is walking across that bridge or little platform ummm does he have weed growing there it sure as hell looks lime it but I may just be ditch weed which is still a form of cannabis but is must less potent then what you would buy off the streets and it does grow wild in America.

  • real people telling their story but really its a hard life no matter the way you tell it but i must say that mountain folk are happier than city folk because they work together rather than apart

  • do i sense an award winning documentary in the making?

  • Where is this at? Reminds me so much of some of my kin folks, makes me wanna go down there.

  • Moonshine, Coal mine, or get on down the line!

  • No one can put a price on the wealth they have!

  • I think he's sayin' by grannies. At least that's what we say where I live. I miss having my own chickens and hogs. I could live like this forever. Give me my Bible and a log cabin and I'd be pleased. Thanks so much for posting this. It brings back wonderful memories.

  • Old timer is about blind and has wire along the path to guide him...awesome! Thanks for the videos.

  • Gente de los montanian, eso si es vida!! Mountain country folk that's the life of peaceful folks! -TX

  • Great footage, i all way wanted to see this way of life.

  • No need to 'better' yourself, when you are good enough already. True Americans these boys.

  • Growin up in the Appalachians, these folks might not have alot, but I promise you they're most likely the best PEOPLE you'll ever meet.

  • City folk & the educated kind would look at this & laugh or look down on the man. But the truth is he's smarter than any one of the city folk kind. See he's not dependent on modern convince. He is not effected when a storm knocks the power out or data bases crash or fuel skyrockets & trucks can't make it to the stores. So you tell me, how dumb is he? Consumers don't know but one thing, & that's how to consume. You'll be in a world of hurt when your $ won't buy you the common sense that man has

  • @F0ckUtoob Nor are they brainwashed by the bullshit, or driven by Konsumer Kulture. THis is real life how it should always be plus a movement to develop true technology. We dont need "jobs" and all that white blue collar bullshit, these are jobs created by the toxic state system. I bet you these people dont have any of the psychological "problems" that the middle america has like obesity and low self esteem..... and Iknow why. I cant wait for the economy to shit itself out its own arsehole.

  • @LoiteringWithIntent No restless leg syndrome or anerexia. All bullshit diseases

we create because we have so much free time with no clear boundary between real and imagined personal crisis. We are so safe that true meaning in our livesis few and far between

  • @F0ckUtoob I am educated. I am Appalachian. I'm from Clendenin, WV. I doubt anyone knows where that's from. But I will have a doctorate this winter. And it's all due to my wonderful family and their support that only a great Appalachian family could provide. My grandma and my mother educated me the best they could. Then I educated myself. Live your dreams people...THAT is what America is about.

  • @F0ckUtoob Your comment puts a Hank Jr song in my mind...A Country Boy Can Survive!! Ü

  • man that ol boy remindes me of my uncle tim.. I bet he could talk your head off huh? haha..

  • What state is this in?

  • You should subtitle this.

  • McMinn Co TN here.hehe take a guess what happens here.

  • I grow my own Veggies,Tobacco, Livestock and make my own wine ,

It tastes better and keeps me in good shape for a 88 year old. My point is that I do all this in a city and pull it off, so get off your keester and live free

  • His eyesight is pretty bad.

  • His eyesight may be bad, but his vision is clear. Keep it simple.

  • you know....im a down to earth city boy.....but even i myself am at the whiim of technology and what have you....I find myself sometimes asking why these people choose to live the way they do, and I have found the answer, the one that i have.....its because they want to

  • @animelubbor432 Minimalism. Keepin that shit simple. Thats why the rest of us are miserable.

  • @stbaptiste78

Idk how happy I would be living in conditions like that, but to each his own I guess.

  • Would you mind if I asked where this was filmed? I live in Southern West Virginia. I found this to be very interesting, and a little inspiring. I think these days alot of people are looking for a more simple life.

  • I wonder if there is a leash law there to make that dog wear a leash....this man is living the life ....God bless him :)

  • whats so odd? just another day in my life for the most part... except i have interenet lol...

  • reminds me of the movie

    The WRONG TURN hahhahaha

  • I think most Americans are getting tired of banks, debt, and a crooked goverment.

  • Amen brother!!!!

  • wellll said

  • @ilililhy i wish we still had public lands and homesteading- but now everything is destroyed or owned by huge agribusiness and they dont even do anything with the land- the only keep it so that other ppl can't buy it

  • @ilililhy Isnt everybody?

  • @ilililhy Such a good comment- so true. :)

  • @ilililhy ha, I thought that was the chicken house. Yep people are tired of the merchants of menace.

  • @ilililhy NOOOOOOOOOO.

  • this needs subtitles. I can't understand anything he said

  • I think they should send Paris and Nicole to live with this guy for the Simple Life.

  • improving the life's of others is not always improving the life's of others to meet your standards or ideals, Just because you like ipods and cell phones doesn't mean everyone else likes one, needs one, wants one.

  • That's what I've been telling people for years.

  • @medievalman86 very well said

  • @medievalman86 Amen to that!

  • @medievalman86 amen i envy these folks to be honest it's a harder life but it's simpler

  • @medievalman86 so well said....perfectly said

  • I'm from kentucky and damn proud of it.

Country folks will give ya the shirt off their

backs, just don't try an steal it.Or your butt in big time trouble.People in the hollers

are good loving people.I loved listening to

the good ol' stories my grandpa would tell.

Our house was full of love for family and friends.Think nutton of giving. You don't get that with city folks,I live in the city now

in kentucky.I sure miss home the way it use to be...thanks for sharing brings back good memories.

  • I literally didn't understand a single word that guy said, but I'd definitely hang with him. I lived in West Virginia for 5 years. Beautiful state, great people.

  • When the shit hts the fan in this country these folk will be the only survivors, they are in touch wiht nature and the land and make some fine likker.

  • I wanna be like them. I wish I knew as much about living and doing stuff on your own. I'm glad they are still here for us.

  • i go to a pretty good engineering school (Virginia Tech) that is at the forefront of many fields - from agriculture to robotics.Yet the man in this video could be living within 50 miles of the campus (Tech is in SW Virginia.) Thats a little mind boggling.

Also, my school stated goal is to improve society through innovation but this dude seems as happy as anyone i've ever come across and it looks like hes not even up to the bronze age yet (all his stuff is made of wood).

  • I believe your school has done allot of work on preserving southern Appalachian information. There is also a great series of books written by Rabun County high school students named Foxfire by Eliot Wigginton.

  • Thanks for sharin'

  • It's a whole different world up in "them hollers". They don't need nobody coming around and telling them anything about how to live. Maybe they don't know it's 2009 and it don't matter. May as well be 1809

These people are self sufficient self supporting and aren't harming anyone they just want to be left alone.

When the dollar is driven down to the final crash and folks in the cities become animals those hill folk won't even know it and will just keep going on like this forever. God bless 'em

  • sucks to be them in january tho.

  • Wow. Ive seen people like this around where i live in Kentucky. Humble people right there.

  • 5 stars! I am from a small town in western NC, where exactly was this filmed? Some of my relatives who are older are so much like this. Full of culture and good ol' stories.

  • these are the real americans not the stereotypical fake bitchs that 99% of americans are today

  • i love humble decent people like that id love to go out and spend some time with them and make myself useful, just to have the priveledge of their company and the beautiful surroundings!

  • I could do this...great video..thanks for posting

  • The guy wit ha beard --->hills have eyes 3.

  • I'm from San Diego, CA... but my grandmother lives in the region of Appalachian Virginia (by Tennessee) that her family has been in since the early 1700s. I was just there recently, and it's amazing how time just stood still.

  • these people will "survive" the new world order "roundup!!!

  • When the U.S economy crashes folks like this are going to be the ones that survive, because there isolated but people in the citys and suburbs will be killing other over bottled water.

  • That's the way to live. No taxes...nobody to take care of but you and your own. If this country gets much more "those who have worked hard, will give more to those who haven't" I will be living like this...and the IRS can kiss my ass.

  • Yes its a simple life but its got to be a hard life. Folks like these posses survival skills and an outlook on life thats surely lost on us civilized types. Folks in the backwoods communities rely on each other in such a manner that you would be hard pressed to get that kind of help in your own neighborhood. This kind of living surely provides a bit of clarity on life. I love these vids. Thanks for posting them.

  • im from tennessee i was raised on a farm we didnt have much i see nothin wrong livin this way but goddamn we kept it clean

  • When was this filmed?

  • I filmed this in 2001.

  • wow i never knew these people ever existed until now

  • All oft he family that I had that lived this way are dead and gone, along with their property. I thank you so much for posting this, and even though it made cry, they were tears of enjoyment. God bless you and yours, and God bless Gene and Hansel.

  • Carbonfusion, I live in ky and was raised like this also. Im proud to be a country girl bc you can take me away to any other place (though I would sorely miss home) but you can never take the country out of me. I know how to plow for planting and hunt and fish and to make do with what I got and never depend on the material things in life. I grew up like that and don't know any other way. Ppl that live in eastern ky and ky in general are raised with respect, kindness and most of all thankful.

  • What's so wonderful about this is that he's not blaming his situation on anyone else. He is who he is, his house is what it is, his life is what it is. He's a free man and beholden to noone. He's not a downtrodden "victim", either in truth or in his own mind. God how refreshing.

  • intresting videos =)

  • I'm from East Tennessee, but have been going to university in London for the past two years. I can tell you that only about a quarter of the people living in this city are even half as civilized as these men in your video. Real, honest, and hardworking...and above all, happy with themselves and their lives. We need more of these people. The world would be a much better place.

  • Im from the other side of the state and we are just as country as our cousins from the east

  • Americaneagle1967, I too live in ky in a small place called rush. Its in eastern ky and I love it here. And yes we are country to the bone :) Proud to be :) So to you I say Hey thar cuz :)

  • Truer words were never spoken.

  • Once again a great documentation of rural life!

  • I'm an Upper East Tennessean born and bred. Raised at the foot of a Mtn and now live on the top of one. After living in the city for 5 years I couldn't wait to get back to the country. I have kinfolk that these men remind me of. I'm 40 and remember my Granny cooking on a wood cookstove. I want one of my own now.

  • My Aunt still uses one here in WNC

  • my kinda peoiple

  • "A man oughta be happy with what he has"

Tell that to the welfare beggers in the inner cities!!!!!

  • i always wondered why God puts people where he does...Then i thank him for putting me right in the middle of these mountains. =)

  • Amen

  • I need subtitles! This looks interesting, but I can't understand half of what he's saying.

  • me too !

  • These are the folks the Feds and Hollywood hate the most. Why? Not so much because they lead a simple life but because they can't be leeched off of or controlled. I hope one day to lead a more simple life and guide others to it. Material wealth is nonsense and transient. Lasting happiness does not come from material wealth.

  • I really laugh that you think anyone in Hollywood or the government hate these people. Honestly, who cares? Theres like 12 of them in total, maybe. They are living exactly as they want to live, without government interference.

  • Are you kidding me? 12. More like 12000 just in the appalachain mountains. How do you think we sell our moonshine?

  • Crackahcrackah, or certain material things as well. I live in ky and live like this almost.

  • @crackahcrackah

Yeah, go tell that to people that can't afford dental care or food for their kids.

  • @crackahcrackah

that there's easy words to say, put yer ass in gear. stock up and get ready.

  • id give all i have to live like that man.

  • Do it then. Find you some land and build a cabin.
