Great video! I was stationed there in 1965-1966 at Site 106 (receiver site) and hung around the AFRTS shack a lot. Had a band there called "The Pounders" (pun intended) that played the NCO club on Friday nights then the Officers Club on some Saturday nights until the Turkish officers doubled what our officer club was paying us to play at the Turkish Base. Once a month we also played a Saturday afternoon gig at the Turk Base for the orphans of the 3rd Turkish Air Force School. Great memories!
I was a technical representative of general electric and worked there for 18 months in 1968 thru 1969. I was a film technician (Fps 17) as well as a coordinator of radar data. Thanks for helping me to relive my experience.(smile). Take care....ca lynch, frm Syracuse, new York and now living in Rochester, ny
Awesome video!! I worked in Diyarbakir Air Station, also called Princlik AS, from 1991 thru 1994 as a civilian with ITT Technical Services International. I worked the old 46 terminal as a SATCOM tech, and also at the Tech Control Facility. Lived in those same old barracks and also off base in downtown Diyarbakir! Fun times!!!!
Hi All , first I would like to thank erod1944 (Ed) for uploading this video. I was born at this air station 1974. I remamber my father MSG Michael Hucko (RIP) use to say he dealed with antennas at Diyarbakir and Lindsey Air Station Germany. Does anyone remember him ? Thanks again Ed I highly appreciate it. Avni Hucko.
Did you know a man who worked for Telesignal named Dick Bissett? He had been there for some time when I got there and remained after I left. He is the only person I can think of that may have been there when you were.
@jekyl1000 No. He may have been involved with the new satellite communications facility that was being built while I was finishing up my tour there. Maybe the only person we both knew was the head waiter at the NCO club; "Mustifa". It's interesting how quickly the personnel turnover occured at Det 75.
I arrived a year after you left because I think I got to Diy in Aug or Sept of 70. I don't remember anyone with the names you mentioned. I left in Aug or Sept of 71 and then went to Homestead for my final 11 months. We had about six or seven controllers while I was there. It's good hearing from you. Thanks for writing.
I enjoyed your video on Diyarbakir AS. I was assigned there from 1970 to 71 as a 30750 also. It was pretty much identical to what your video and still pictures showed. I made some lifelong friends there and it very likely was the best assignment I had (in hindsight). I also left the Air Force after one enlistment and went on the work 36 years for AT&T. Thanks for putting this son YouTube and if you ever want to gab just send me a note.
@jekyl1000 I'm wondering if you were my replacement? I left in Aug 1969. Were two Tech Controllers named Warren Schroth or Jim Missick still at Diyarbakir when I left. Were they there when you arrived?
@erod1944 Ed, Long time no see. I am the Jim Messick in your photo's. I was lookiing for info on the Van earthquake and stumbled upon your posting. Many thanks for sharing this info about Diyarbakir Air Station. It's been a long time since I gave it much thought. Warren was my roommate. I arrived in Aug 68 from 2186 Comm Sq (San Pablo Air Base, Seville, Spain) and Warren had arrived from Germany. We both left on 19Aug69 for home. I was discharged at McGuire AFB,NJ. Hope all is well.
@JMikeKilo Hi Jim - Glad to hear from you. Everything is swell - I worked for 38 years at AT&T as a Microwave Radio Tech - Retired 1 1/2 yrs ago. I've got Kids, Grand Kids and spend my time taking videos, studying jazz guitar and bicycling with the wife. You and Warren were actually my last memory of Diyarbakir as you guys escorted me to the bus for my trip back to California. I remember you as "MK" at San Pablo because you were quick & accurate to respond to the OW. Tnx for the Note KKK RS.
@erod1944 Hi Ed, I have good memories of Diyarbakir too. I am married to a great gal for the past 39 years, no kids, and retired 2004. I spent most years in the computer industry with the last 6 in Information Security at an NYC hospital. Shortly after our discharges I attended Warren's wedding in Rochester, NY but not a word since. We enjoy traveling with some biking. Looking forward to leaving NJ for points south...NC or SC in the next year or two. Stay well. MK
