  • Fantastic Video

  • We're tool users, rare but not unique. Elephants paint, artistic merit, rare but not unique. We're rare but not unique.

Conflating Corporate exploitation and artistic repression implies the need of capitalisim in art.

Anti-media jingoism is tiring, assault the media on its own lack of merit.

Citing Marx does not bolster your argument.

Make art because it makes you happy.

Make art because it makes others happy.

Make money making the world a better place.

Beg sympathy when you're more deserving.

  • You are missing the point.. No economical system should be base for artistical expression and none should restrain it. get out of the box p.rex you artisan.

  • Ok, I agree with the second sentence, as does my comment, and then you make baseless accusation against me and call me names...hard to tell what side of the issue you're on. :P

"get out of the box" "artisan" oi, jingo much?

  • "Make money making the world a better place."

Ha! That's so naive it's almost cute.

  • Honesty is not a negative characteristic. The absence of my opinion that everyone should work to cut the throat of everyone else is a social value, what non-sociopaths call morals. I'm given to understand most americans are ignorant of this concept, you poor ignorant yankee.

  • Verdaderamente!!! gracias, muchisimas gracias... Artists of the world unite!!!!

  • And you believe that the backers of the bill - yahoo and microsoft and the image selling sites - share your marxist's idea's?

  • Thank you for this video! I want to be an animator someday but I can't stand the very thought of this Orphaned Works Bill.

  • here here! very well said. I definitely think this is a means for corporations to steal and assimilate fresh ideas and use them for their own benefit. This is getting a post on my myspace- thanks for taking the time and energy to compile this and speak your mind. Much love.

  • couldnt of said it better myself. really.

  • wow you have a perfect 5 stars at 190 ratings. good job

  • Very Nice!! Well thought out and well spoken. Keep Up the great work, this is my first video I've seen from you but I look forward to watching the others.

  • Upon reviewing your videos I've noticed that your wardrobe tends to hold a 'hidden' message of it's own, or am I mis-interpreting?

In this case you have a T-shirt of the Philippines while your artwork displays the statue of Liberty and M16 that represents United States, and armaments from the Spanish Empire.

The archipelago was consolidated by conquistadores into Spain under King Phillip, then later usurped by the US in the Spanish-American war under the pretext of 'Liberation'.

  • @iKnowYouSeeThis

You're a clever one. Thank you for paying attention to detail my friend.

  • That can be taken a bit ambiguously... clever as in presumptuous or perceptive?

I'd like to have an idea of the accuracy of my assumptions.

  • Perceptive. My shirt is indeed a reference to European and American imperialism.

  • Your smooth and slick man.

  • Your wonderful artwork in the video strikes directly at United States hypocrisy in parading through the world as ideal freedom-fighters or "Liberators" while in actuality acting as usurper profiteers or "conquistadors".

  • Amazing you've pierced the vale of the capitalist mentality... nothing is sacred but that which makes a profit.

This is a subject so overlooked since it is only artistic individuals who end up facing the dilemma of whether to follow their passion and likely become a "starving artist" or join a marketing firm and become a "sellout".

Corporatism can never truly promote the Arts, it can only trivialize the Arts -- since they constantly seek to impose a "formula" on the creative thought process.

  • It even applies to things like English class in high school. Look at my 'A' grade English papers compared to my actual heart-felt writings. The English papers are pitiful and lifeless. I bullshit papers to get the grade, there is no art behind the writing. I'm very paranoid about my art because I do it for ME. MY ENJOYMENT. It's nobody else's. My writings are beautiful (although that is in the eye of the beholder); however, my schoolwork is pointless junk just to get my 'A' and move on.

  • i'm glad you said that. it goes to the idea i logged on to discuss- has the theft of art led to artists burying their talents in a hole? do some produce less because of disappointment in the graphic business?

also due to the fact that so many talentless people can do some jobs by utilizing modern technology? what do you think?

i actually watched one boss grab my design, take a pair of scissors and cut my signature off, then used it to mass produce.

i don't like to post things because of that.

  • there is an awsome point made in there.

  • It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull senses. - Mark Twain

  • SERIOUSLY, THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT CAME TO THIS LAND FROM OTHER COUNTRIES.

get a grip. was This Land not invaded, occupied, millions killed, their culture and languages destroyed, their property taken, etc... this is a historical cycle that can NOT be stopped as long as there is such division amongst those who wish for peace. blaming the USA (or country or race or religion whatever) is a distraction to keep human minds off the real issue. wake up.

  • not me!! i've been able to paint since i stuck my fingers in my pablum!

  • REALLY no shit? i can't believe you think that. blows my mind. do you travel? and just for the fuk'ing record, when you say American, i assume you mean YOUR relatives that came here to THIS land and killed my relatives and now ... oh i give up. i'm a grandmother and i have patience if you want to discuss but you are full of media crap.

as for the boys, the comment was birds make art to attract a mate, i would say adulation and sex fall into that category, so according to you, i'm right on.

  • i don't think that's an "American" sentiment. there are plenty of citizens in plenty of places that imagine themselves superior for some reason or another. i think it's unfair that you would put that attitude off on one geographical area that happens to have the same group of buddy system government running it as you have in your area, we are on the same planet. don't kid yourself, it's an imaginary image. blaming USA seems to be a pervasive attitude, and THAT is dangerous. it's a distraction.

  • I love when people speak and make me think. Will have to watch more of your videos and discover more of your insight.

  • well said >......Kim

  • Bravo, great video, flawless analysis of this modern society.

  • Everything around us is "Art".

  • every society has its flaws. It is utterly pointless to speak of one social organization outside of its context. The perception of art and aesthetics in past times is vastly different from our own. You cant compare them the way you do. You are making a methodological flaw. So i wouldn't say capitalism ruined art... We just have a different system of values...

  • Capitalism has expanded art and creativity. More people are creating art now than any other time in human history.

  • cool t-shirt you are wearing! mabuhay!

  • Very intriguing and well done.

    Good post.

  • I'd say that Cowboy Bebop is an exception to common industrialized animation, it's perceivably more of a collaborative art project with monetary value coming in second to the art itself, which is, yes, unusual but almost undeniable.

  • Im loving the flag in the background!

  • I can't believe that people think the Orphan Works is pro-art stealing, it isn't. Think about what orphan means the replace an orphan child with artwork such as photography or sculptures.

  • hahaha what a riot!

  • Ah yes, It's a riot because it's "not the plan of the government" right? Go ahead with your conspiracy theories. Here is a better scenario for all you fucked up American citizens.

You find a picture, one that has been in your family for generations, but you also want to put it in the museum because it's a photograph of an iconic figure. The Orphans act would transfer the original photographer's copyright to you seeing as he or she is no longer living.

Figure it out you stupid American fucks.

  • @Pianodecruscendo

For someone calling everyone a "stupid American fuck", your argument is based in fantasy. I take it you didn't read the article linked in the description or you'd know a bit more about this bill.

Still, lets take your extremely narrow argument and apply the bill to family photos. Except this time someone from a studio finds them online and copyrights them. Now your photos are used in commercials and tv shows and you have no rights to them. Figure it out indeed.

  • hey dickhead, i was laughing at your wording! re-read that sentence grammatically without emotion and tell me it isn't funny?

it says: "the replace an orphan child with artwork such as photography or sculptures." means: you can take in a kid and trade it in for a statue or photo. if your typo was "y" instead of "n". it's funny. i dare you to go to my page and see what i'm about and say i deserved to be called fucked up. shame on you. i'm an artist, writer, and work to preserve native languages

  • You? An Artist? A Writer? HA. You can't even capitulate right. And do you know what? I'm an artist too, I'm also writing multiple novels right now.

And that sentence? No, that wasn't what I was meaning. I was saying as instead of an Orphan, put a photograph or sculpture in the Orphan's place. The piece would be in the same shoes the Orphan is.

And another thin for you, iMB. You are one pathetic person. You are 46 and yet you can't capitalize worth a dime, you might as well be 13.

  • Dear Sweet Pianocruscendo, i knew exactly what you meant in your sentence, partly because i know the subject and i can read between the lines. as for my punctuation, and being an artist, there's a pattern to mine. can you read between the lines? i wouldn't mind being 13, if i could go back and take this knowledge with me. your TYPOS ARE FUNNY don't get all uppity at me just because i have a sense of humor. "and another thin for you"...hahaha not sorry, i won't change, if i don't laugh i'll cry.

  • "And another thin for you"- how do you know if i agree with you on points or not, you are so busy being hostile and prejudice, you didn't slow down long enough to think about it. passion is one thing, but out of control emotion screws one out of winning an argument in most cases. anger just causes T_R-O~U`B^L_E

some of you people on the internet are ridculously hostile. it's unnecessary.

e.e. cummings and GOD /or/ EECUMMINGS and g.o.d.

the signature is not your choice, it's mine.

  • iMB, if you knew what I was implying in my sentence, then why did you twist it around into a disgrace? For giggles? Ha! And read between the lines? I can understand the meanings of words, something you try and make into snickers and giggles. I can read between the lines but I don't go "lol you meant you can take in a kid and trade it in for a statue or photo lol" unlike you. You don't comprehend what is being said, you laugh at it.

Slow down and think about it?

  • Do you think I would side with IDIOTS such as you and 99.9% of the American citizens? Anger causes snickers and giggles, that is what I am doing right now at the point you are getting across: "Be one of us." Fuck you.

Besides, why would some one as 'intelligent' as you try and space our words to make them seemingly intimidating? You want to seem like an internet bad-boy? It's funny that you are a writer, it really is.

  • You always seem to fail at making sentences look like you even care about capitulations errors. Lets see how many you racked up in your last two posts.

    First: eleven to twelve

    Second: six

What does that tell you? That you might as well go back to middle school to learn how to press the keys that makes letters capitalized. Or do you think you don't have to because this is the age were there is texting so you just don't care anymore?

  • I can't believe I am wasting my time on scum like you. My point is sealed and there is nothing you can do about it.

    -Fin

  • woh aer oyu talikng to? there are so many here that don't punkchewate. if it's me, i didn't fail if you think it looks like i don't care about errors. they aren't erroneous, they're decorative.

who are you intimidating? is there going to be a test? should i study? will i get paid? be one of who? what is an internet bad-boy?

the fact that you said go back to middle school indicates your mindset. you curse about a few capital letters but fume if one teases a bit concerning your word usage?

  • i did not twist it into a disgrace. i read it, and took it literally. you expect everyone to be able to imply your meaning then throw a prejudice hissy fit when it is pointed out tthat you need to be more clear when you write. you think that was a disgrace?

i laugh even when i comprehend what is being said. i laugh anyway. all the time, which can be inconvenient, i don't attend many funerals.

  • Your Reason is wrong your just trying to get attention which you fail at. :3

  • Great video. With all due respect, most of the comments so far do not do justice to the philosophical depth of the project. I'm not so sure I agree with you about the inevitable downfall of capitalism -- its proven to be much more robust and complex than Marx envisioned. But you did a great job of highlighting the contradictions under which modern artists must pursue their (a)vocations. Thanks for the stimulating video.

  • seriously why is this a featured video and not my stick figure video..watch my stick fig..If you want a good laugh!

  • I like your point of view.

  • Palestina ayer, hoy y siempre.

  • i think imk brain washed lol

  • give me a fucking break...theres something really weird about preaching to people one at a time. although thats not why im pissed...just generally, stop worrying about capitalism u goddamn commie. if i wanted to draw a picture of george bush shitting himself and then put it in the news i could. and i could ask for money from it or not.

  • i'll be there

  • i didnt know where you were going with this initially, but now i understand. i would have to agree with much of what you say. i certainly hope you can still feel connected to the pockets of true creatives still generating art and ideas here on youtube.

  • amazing just wow. by the way the flag is great. i was born in jordan

  • GROW UP YOU STUPID CHILD

  • yeah Palestine for life .. fuck all the israel jews.

  • fuck israel and any one love it

  • really greatt

  • there never was, and there probably never will be an egalitarian society. Marx is just strongly influenced by Morgan and his evolutionary view of human society. I would disagree that the art is the only thing that separates us from animals. In fact you have shown an example of animal ability to understand abstract concepts. Interesting critique of capitalism but you don't know enough about anthropology.

  • i agree with you, sharkalishari, somewhat. but, what do you mean about the animals and abstract concepts? correct me if i'm wrong, but the separation from the animals in that sense was more of an understanding/aesthetic appreciation of art, rather than production for reward.

  • i don't think you took the time to see the comparative unimportance of these anthropological assertions within the context of this focused dialog he has opened up for us here. don't get caught up in the details.

  • yes I'm palestine

  • The only thing that distinguishes man form animals are pancakes. No animal will touch them.

  • are you palestinin?

  • hehe yeah , nice flag :D

  • Nice flag in the background woo woo....

  • It's not clear to me, what this talking is all about. Of course, in capitalism the art underlies the rules of trading as everything else - and this has consequences on HOW art is produced as well. But I don't see where art is "stolen". The artist decides, whether he sells his work and if he does, to whom he sells it. So where's the problem?

  • you communist

  • thank you

  • Just plain inspiration!Right attitude, too! It's kinda creepy that I saw your video in the related videos column (I was watching claymore amv).I keep thinking that I could live all my life and never hear your ideas(I live in greece, how many of you know where that is?).Is it ok that the words "theft" and "art" made me click your video?Keep creating!

  • i know where greece is. my brother's girlfriend is greek. thanks for taking that step and clicking on this video. glad you thought it was worth it, no matter what got you here. peace.

  • Oops! I thought it said *The Art of Theft*.. I'm a burglar and thought maybe I could pick up some tips. But not!

  • the real theft is in business. if your game is burglary then my tip is to buy a nice suit and climb that corporate ladder.

  • 7 mins, 3 seconds? I'd say it was worth it.

    Thanks professor.

  • you're a good class.

  • you filipino???

  • palestinian

  • never mind.

"I get many questions about my ethnicity. The short answer is that I'm white and Filipino. Hence the name. A peaceful single-state solution is a cause I strongly believe in, but despite the flag in the background, I'm not Palestinian - just an advocate for the cause."

  • half filipino. there's often confusion about that. the palestinian flag reflects my politics, not my ethnicity or nationality. peace.

  • well said..

  • so there is no art without an observer? does a falling tree make sound if no one hears it fall? lol but if I may let my fantasy go, maybe then we are created merely to observe the art of our creator "God"?

  • some of what you say are right, its true that quality of almost all art decrease constantly over the years due to profit becoming more important than quality, and with more profit beeing put into advertising and such, people end up believing low quality things are actually better. that for example is how the new action movie "shoot em up" ever made it to the cinemas, and some morons are even brainwashed into thinking it was good. and dont even get me started on starship troopers 2, omfg :(

  • lol we are not created by unknown means lol at least not to me hahaha. I could tell you how to do it though, it goes as follows. You find a female, you take out your penis and stick it into her reproductive organ lol I think you got the point... Nothing alien or unknown...

  • Me as a person, did not find your art more artistic. Are you just upset because you aren't skillful enough to make it in the main stream? I believe you are wrong in your statement that the process of rewards and discouragement ruins art and causes it to become repetitive. Please reevaluate your philosophy because I think it is flawed. I do however agree that corporation have had many negative side effects an art as a whole.

  • I did! You find Britney Spears more artistic then? It's a theory off course but it's not les then logic to me that when your main goal is to be materially rewarded "ART" in itself is getting put on the second place. A true artist knows this very well. I design occasionally for commercial companies, and I can tell you first handed my commercial work is not my best work, far from it. Especially when I design on demand...I wouldn't even call it art. True art transcends its material value.

  • well said. the cross is the crux of the biscuit.

  • Why would this person have to "re-evaluate his philosophy" because you think it's flawed?

  • I did not command the poster to "re-evaluate his philosophy"-- did I? Re-evaluating the posters philosophy is merely a suggestion. There was no "have to" in my comment.

  • what was posted, i don't know if it was you who posted it (i cant remember the name), but it said that he should re-evaluate it because that person didn't agree with it, i never said that you said he had to, thats why it's not in quotes. Regardless, why should someone have to re evaluate anything because another person doesn't like it? Personally i wouldn't want to agree with someone if it wasn't what i believed. I'm not saying weather or not this person has a good philosophy or not..(tbc)

  • I'm just asking the you(or whoever posted the comment i can't find now for some reason) why the vid poster would change because of what one other person says. i wasn't attacking you, just asking a question, and i apologize if i came off attack-ish

  • Why should one persons voice be any less influencing than a couple or million? Truth is not always what a collection of individuals believe. If you want me to say that, "I do want him to (not change but to) re-evaluate what he holds as for truth in todays art because I see it differently. Then yes I do. What is wrong with criticisms?

  • To be honest, what offended me the most about the vid poster's claim is that art has got worse. He did not state it as opinion but as fact. Which in no way is possible to claim as fact because art is subjective to individual likes.

  • He is basically stating opinion as fact and trying to back it up with big words and science that don't directly associate to his claim. Which I believe is "Capitalism ruins art"? I don't have the time but If I broken down his argument logically it would probably come out invalid because of loose connections.

  • Why should AnimeFreeMan have to reevaluate his philosophy just because you believe it's flawed ? Your question / notion which implies that benign deliberation mustn't occur and that incorrigibility is an desirable thing is a question & notion which goes both ways i.e. it contradicts itself

  • Mistake in editing: I meant a, not "an"

  • I'm confused are you agreeing with me or with the vid poster?

  • I was merely supporting the capacity for benign discourse by making an example of the hypocrisy in Delirium Cross's argument i.e. I was supporting your/thee overall ability to add constructive criticism whilst refuting Delirium's apparent attempt to stifle all deliberation. It wasn't about agreement or disagreement with you or ManilaRyceTM nor does it need to be perceived as such but if you must know; I don't feel I have enough data to necessarily agree with you or the point made in the video

  • Ah, Ok that is what I thought.

  • shits crazzyyy!!!!

  • Just one more resource for the crime families to exploit in the name of free trade.

  • Depakote is a psych drug

  • i like your shirt. im from the philippines.

  • It is our recognition of God.

And in that, it is our seperation from God.

The animals don't aknowledge God because they are so close to him, so they don't question God.

  • So we are created? lol then we must be ART itself :D w00t

  • while art is a fundamentally human property, we are not only defined by art imo. SO I don't think art is the only thing that separates us from the animals. Thus if someone has absolute no concept of art (which I can not imagine), he is not excluded from the human definition lol... As long as you can reproduce with a human you probably are a homosapien so don't worry lol ;)

  • Thats not true either. Elephants can paint.

  • Only if taught.

  • @Rabbitvoz

You bring up an interesting point, one I touch on in the video, that animals with high intelligence do have the ability to create art. However, they do not naturally do so. Elephants and chimps will only paint if a human teaches them how. They don't carve in trees or do cave paintings in the wild. I also make sure to use the phrase "create with an artistic purpose". The Bower Birds you're referencing do not create art for art's sake, but to attract a mate.

  • Fair enough but isnt attraction the main purpose of artistic expression?

  • hmm hard to say... I consider myself an artist. I want my art to be as attractive as it can be, but my main goal is the creation itself. But like every parent I wan't my art to be the best out there. Like Rabbitvoz said of God a mirror of myself. Art can also be repulsive, but I guess that could be attractive aswell. Still attraction is in the eye of the beholder. Very hard to say. Also to define attraction is very difficult imo. Is attraction some magical force to generate attention?

  • wait a minute-- isn't that also the main reason teenage boys want to be rock stars?

does that make adam any less of an artist? i don't know! i'm so cornfused!

i've seen animals arrange things in a way that is pleasing to them. if you change it they put it back. i don't know if that's art to them or what, but they have created something they enjoy looking at. it's a curiousity for sure.

  • Can I say Amen?

  • Apparently yes.

  • Well... I don't know about that "eventual fall of capitalism"... but it was interesting anyway

  • Great video!

    ART! ART! ART!

    See --starZship--- art on youtube!!!!

  • Very interesting and intelligent video.

  • A very intelligent and eye-opening video.

  • intense

  • Nice video! Speaking the way things are run around here... let me know what you think of this space (peace(dot)tv)

    hopefully this comment posts

  • Very informative video, I watched the entire thing without missing a word. Very mesmerizing. Haunting facts as well.

  • viva palestine

  • hell yeah

    proud of it

  • look at this bold head talking crab, dude you call this art? you should take that weird head to a museum thats art.

  • look at this dumb post left by an idiot, dude you call this intelligent? you should take your post, and go fcuk yourself now thats intelligent.

  • Check out Elephant painting self protrait.

  • haha, i never rele thot what seprates us from othr animals, but yes it is art:D

  • This is very well-informed position.

It would be great if you could make this statement to Congress!

They would be slack jawed...Most of it would blaze over their heads like whizzing bullets.

    *****:)

  • YAWN

  • Weak-minded fool. OfTheWillows

  • My comment was artistic. Don't criticize me just because you don't "get it."

  • YAWNing chasm of empty souless foul intention...OfTheWillows.

  • And Vincent, I hope English is your second language because that sentence was abysmal.

  • Oh poo, your breaking my heart.

  • Yea very well done! I seldom watch a 7 min video without loosing concentration, but you had me all along.

  • palestine flag behind you:))

  • Great video, man! Hope it'll be getting its deserved attention soon!

  • Ahh..i may not know art, but i know what i like..lol..this is simply splendid :-)

  • Ah, I'm so glad I watched this!

    Thanks!!

  • your perspective is thought provoking....i do find our that our entertainment, music, clothes are somewhat MONOTONE. An oversaturation of what is considered appealing to the majority. I love to cook, and feel I am creative through cooking/baking, however, I now feel inspired to do more.... =]

  • Thank you!

  • Food for thought, im full. :D

  • You have to find a way to create things that other people value. Do whatever you want if you love it but don't whine if you can't make something that others aren't willing to pay you for. Economy works by providing goods and services which serve and pleasing your fellow man. Do something they value. Don't play the victim because you aren't appreciated. Society doesn't owe you anything. If Disney, makes somehting I like, I'll support it. When they make crap, I won't. Pretty straight forward.

  • True capitalism is the FREE exchange of goods and services between two willing parties who mutually agree on a price. If there is any force involved, if something is "taken" from you, then it is not capitalism. If an artist produces something that others value, they can exchange money, or any other medium for that art. No one has a responsibility to support you if they don't value what you produce. Dollars follow value. It's that simple. People buy what they value.

  • WICHTIG !! IMPORTANT - IMPORTANT what you tell to all creative Utubers here .

    1000 Danke schoen. P. 5*

  • i think what separate human from animal is the car. humans can make and drive the car. animals can not too. some say art as separate but i see video of elephant paint and birds make statue of nest. so in conclusion, what separate us from animal is the car.

  • Um, actually I'm pretty sure it's the rocket ship. Duh....

  • Amazing!!!!

  • Utterly brilliant.

  • Excellent video - very powerfull with an important message. I wish you success with the competition. Best wishes...

  • Thank you. You bring to light many ideas that I've not given much thought to before, but are very true. I appreciate that you solidify something that I've only vaguely perceived, but actually I can now see that it touches my daily life. Peace, Kayla

  • all artists on this planet need to come together in order to rectify these insane (and illegal) "laws" made up by punditshiturdumpoobrainedumbasses. they call them CONgress for a reason.

thanks ManilaRyce for your candidness and deft presentations. this one stinks to high heaven, or is it hell? people are starting to understand the difference, right?

  • your vids all rock.

thanks for the great info in the sidebar as well.

the US Senate and House are comprised of the real terrorists. and the people are going to start throwing shit, as art of course, in order to let them know where we stand.

    peace

    truth

    liberty

freedom, not free dumb. thanks for the intelligent discussions.

    rip america.

  • That was pretty damn good!

  • That was amazing, thank you.

  • fantastic video, thank you for posting this.

  • What flangum said.

    Are you a Libra?

Just jerking your chain. Great video. Will pass it on.

  • why thank ye red head. i'm actually a scorpio.

  • RE: repetitiveness

    Shades of Andy Warhol.

  • Please stop using the term "wage slavery", it's offensive.

  • thanks for the feedback, but much of what i say is offensive to many people. "wage slavery" in particular is a rather accurate term which has been used by socialist thinkers to critique the coercion and absence of choice in capitalist systems. i will continue using it unless you can present a compelling case as to why it's inaccurate.
