I remember her telling me stories of people lying about their neighbours being so-called Enemies of the People because if a person didn't report about something like that to the KGB on a weekly basis, then that person him or herself could be suspected of being an enemy. She also told me about people coming late to work for fifteen minutes and then getting fifteen years of hard time. I thank my mother that I live in Canada.

She had to sell their home to pay the bill. The rest of us at the table live in countries with a national health services. We have no medical bill worries. Mentioning this, the American friend said she did not want national health coverage--it's communism. She doesn't want to be a slave like we are.

Canadians for example come to the US for treatment because of the wait and inability of the system there to offer the medical services they need. Those who can afford it from other countries also come here. Hospitals filled with them. No, socialized medicine is NO medicine at all except at its most basic level for those who are actually not sick.

State financed quality education, health care, pensions for the handicapped and over-65's, unemployment compensation, housing. Remember Stalin did not do the mass murders himself he had accomplices. These animals lusted for human sacrifice not realizing that they too were to be butchered by their own following their 'great genius fearless leader.'

Today's young communists are not totalitarian dictatorship worshipers! Today we have a great deal to learn from the mistakes that those who liked to call themsevles communists (like Stalin) commited, making them even worse than the capitalist imperialists they claimed they were fighting. It was Lenin's deepest regret that the Revolution didn't happen in Germany first. If it would have triumphed there first, many believe that Marx's and Engels' concepts may have been applied correctly.

Yes, but Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once said "Marx and Engels' writings were the dream. Stalin and Lenin's execution of this dream was a terrible nightmare." Even Lenin played the instrumental role in the installment of the earliest labor camps. When the camps became too full from too many arrests, he instructed Gulag authorities to either work more prisoners to death or to kill them outright.

@davazno1 - I've been trying to tell Russians, who have been brainwashed by their government controlled media and edited "history books," for sometime that Russia was an ally with Hitler in 1939 and that Russia ran Death Camps in Siberia, one of the most famous being the Kolyma Death Camp. Thank you for pointing out this truth and moving beyond what the Russians would have us believe.

Do not be so naive. In Russia and Germany in 1939, had common interests. Russia had to return to Soviet territories that were occupied by Poland in 1921. Germany had to invade Poland. Related interests between the two countries - this is not the alliance. Between the USSR and Nazi Germany is no alliance was not. No historical documents, which have said that between the USSR and Nazi Germany was the Union.

You better tell me, if you're so smart, why France and Britain declared war on Germany, but not declared war on the USSR? You probably do not know that the Soviet Union had tried to agree with Britain and France on the establishment of anti-fascist alliance? But Western countries have ignored it, and, thus, pushed the USSR towards agreements with Hitler. It was obvious that if Hitler would start a war with Poland, then Germany's armed forces will be located 600 km from Moscow.
