  • Miluji hudbu Edwarda Griega a tento koncert je jedním z nejkrásnějších a Valentina- to je zkrátka královna klavíru současné doby!!!! Děkuji - je to úžasný zážitek!

  • Valentina does not 'play' the piano... she caresses it, gently, accurately and with passion. Watch her fingers on the right hans when she place them one by one on the ivory. It reminds of the cats that put one paw slowly before the other one when they watch attentively.

  • This captures the essence of beauty.

  • Valentina... Will you divorce your husband and come live with me? I'm old and don't have any money and not that good looking but I would treat you like the goddess you are. Think about it before you say no out of hand. I'll ask my girlfriend of 20 years to move out so that won't be a problem.

  • ...Truly, a great performance

  • I am hypnotized when she is playing!

  • the lady at the piano...makes the music 10, 000 times more lovely :)

  • I love this woman

  • she's no Eric Morcambe!

  • Bill Bailey has ruined this song for me. Every time i here a certain part of the song, i can't get out of my head "Ave a Ba-nnaaana!!"

  • Brava Valentina! Ochen khoroshaya!

  • J'adore... Merci Valentina... We love you! I loooooove you! § ;-))

  • Valentina is Superb and in deed very exceptional. Extremely fast and brilliant. She plays the concerto movement 1-3 very well. Like Rubernstein she made Grieg like immortalized through her. Grieg is alive through her. Thank you very much everybody and may God bless you all.

  • im here listenin to classical music

    drinking my coffee and studying

what else can i do to get smarter

  • @alexchris32 Cognitive enhancing drugs.

  • assisto esta maravilha relaxado em minha poltrona! Desligo telefone, campainha etc, etc.. m a r a v i l h o s o!!

  • that's really not a good choice of dress, though it's in a nice eye-catching rose red colour, the bodice looks too tight on her and look at the dress strap......the strap is too loose and I could imagine it falling off to her arm any moment with her movements. While her hands are playing, there would be no chance of her fixing the fallen strap. It's funny how she chose a dress with too-tight a bodice but too loose a strap? That dress is particularly unbalanced for her......

  • @charizianne do we give a shit?

  • @charizianne Alright... so you're hearing/seeing a world-renowned pianist at hher finest and all you can comment on is her dress!? Really!? Come on!

  • @NemoProkofiev551 Well, to quote you, don't you think a world-renowned pianist such as she should pay more attention to what she wears onstage? Because come on, even if it's the music that matters the most, she is performing at the most prestigious halls all over the world with thousands watching her, also filming her to get her into TV, internet, etc for all the world to see! I guess more attention to her dress would compliment her playing even more!

  • @charizianne Superficiality101!

Will you do me a favour and read what you just posted, please!

I mean, are you reading/ listening to yourself at all? Sorry if the former insulted you at all, just reflect on what's happening here. Did most people even mention her dress? No. So is it really that important to the thousands of people who've viewed this? I don't mean to insult you. I geniunely just want you to think about it. I'm concerned about you, complete stranger (no sarcasm).

  • @NemoProkofiev55 if she is dressed in a pyjama or bikini or naked, would that be fine at all?

admit it, even though people don't comment about it, it does not mean it does not matter. Let me ask you one thing, if there is a girl in an elegant evening gown playing mozart and another girl wearing a casual t-shirt and jeans playing the same piece, who looks more suitable?

  • @NemoProkofiev551 and really,if you work for a company, would you come to a company meeting or meet potential clients dressed in a casual t-shirt and jeans? what impression would that make? it's you who should learn a bit more about professionalism, because I'm not talking about superficiality here, but professionalism in keeping yourself presentable.

By the way, I don't mean to insult you. I geniunely just want you to think about it. I'm concerned about you, complete stranger (no sarcasm).

  • @charizianne and think of what level she is in, she is world class! You would not want to perform in the best and most prestigious halls looking less than how you should look. Even the audience are so well-groomed in tuxedos and elegant dresses, let alone the performer..?! If you are only performing with a school orchestra or regional orchestra then that might be a different case...........

  • @charizianne But there's a different in ''casual clothes'' and ''decent dress''. It's not a pageant show, it's just a piano concerto. Every type of formal clothing is just fine here.

  • a fine performance of grieg's masterwork for piano - thanks to all the artists especially valentina!

  • Valentina, what an amazing performer! I like just the way she interprets this concerto, exquisite.

  • This is truly a beautiful performance, she is wonderful. I think the only one that moved me more was Arther Rubinstein's performance when he was almost 90 years old. His face showed such deep but stoic passion - it just made me shiver - but YouTube took it off :(

  • Perfect...She plays like an angel!!!

  • Magnificent....she plays like an angel

  • Would be hilarious if she just broke out into the Eric Morcambe version

  • hermosa interpretacion

    una de las mejores

  • this is my fav piece as well as the new world symphony by dvorak ,...... i listen to it every day she is the best i have listened to

  • @TViolin999 these two are exactly my favourites too! what a coincidence!

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE the director!!!!:D

  • This version is best for me:

    youtube.com/watch?v=yQglUo5dDVk

  • It's a really beautiful piece. I wonder how Grieg would have played it?

  • And THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is a women I'd marry forthwith.

  • uh i really love this song. It's so beautiful and mystic at the same time :D.

It helped me doing my homework, lol. without this song i wouldn't be ready with it haha.

    and actually THAT IS music

(if there's somethin' wrong with my english, then i'm sorry D:)

  • BRAVO

  • 100% music

  • So great, Val!!!! " Morgenstimmung "... theme echoes of... may be? Only for insider... smile! I know all piano compositions, but no one has ever so played like you! Chapeau!!!!

  • So great, Val!!!!

  • I see the anal retentive people here haven't been eating enough bran.

  • @M5a1r4c7 The term "anal retentive" has nothing to do with constipation; it has to do with a Freudian idea, currently unpopular, that some people become obsessed with order and control because they "retain" psychological aspects from their toilet training coinciding with a stage that Freud described as a normal developmental shift from oral to anal focus.

This deservedly popular piece was excellently performed here, with extra bravura. I wonder why Grieg wrote only one piano concerto.

  • Conductors are intense, lol. In every version of this PIECE I've seen they all have really interesting facial expressions.

  • @Xenocide31337 (>o<)

  • this piece is great!!!! I'm playing the piano too for several years and I hope that I will be able to play it so incredibly as valentina did...... she is awesome!!!!!

  • I really can not put in words how this is .All Positive of course

  • beautiful PIECE. there.

  • @MatthewRabbit99 And all this because I kindly pointed out that there is no "love this song"-button featured on YouTube, and that a song is only a song if it has a singer.

Sigh, what have we been reduced to... -_-"

  • @masterd000 Aw come on. It is a simple mistake and see the positive side, at lesat people continue hearin this song.

  • @Filip6o6 Well, excuse me MY English, I am from Norway. And by the way, this I learned from a friend from Lithuania.

But honestly though, I don't take shit from people who disrespect famous artists and then neglect apologies, but instead throw shit in respectful peoples' faces.

I won't blame you, but that was just a sad remark.

  • @masterd000 you shut up, smart ass

    flag ur comment as spam

  • Wow. Think I prefer this to the Rubinstein. Heresy I believe but.... Wow.

  • she's playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

  • WOW!!

    So beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Valentina Lisitsa, for me she is the best pianist :) amazing technique!

  • magic hand. hihi, i love you

  • I love how you can solidly hear the first note she plays, alot of interpretations often mask the first note with the drum roll, which i consider that very first note to be the most important its a very bold note

  • Where's the end?!?!?!?!?!

  • 27 people...mmm if they can play better I'm gonna listen them!:)

  • There's so much fluidity in her fingers, inspiring!

  • awsome,just..i don't know exactly what to say,the only thing that comes to my head is...amazing!

  • Is she the sister of Olga Kern?

  • The concertmaster should have stood up when Valentina Lisitsa faced him to shake his hands. That's just proper protocol and shows proper respect for the soloist, right Valentina?

  • I love her technique <3 her fingers are moving and touching the piano in such a beautiful way. and her facial epression is so real emotional touched.

  • Grieg - such a wonderful composer! His elegiac melodies are incredible bur the A minor piano concerto is something else. This piano concerto must rank amongst the greatest.. So lyrical, so colourful, so romantic.. A true dellght.

    So well performed.

    Harry E W Smith, E,D. A.D.M.

  • I've never listened to this before, but I instantly recognized the intro. I'm assuming it was in some sort of advertisement. Absolutely beautiful.

  • You two stuck-up pricks moaning about using the word "song"... this is a perfect example of music that sings to me.

  • i love her so much !!!

  • Absolutely jaw dropping. My highschool played this exact piece (non-arranged) at our Spring concert and it's my favorite. It's just and incredible piece and words can not describe anyones feelings towards it especially after months of playing it. This interpretation is lovely.

  • she is very beautiful....and she play very well.....

  • Valentina , is one of the greatest pianist of all the time.

  • orchestra is bad.

  • @fruitbraker haha it bugs the shit out of me when my friends or family call pieces "songs" ;)

  • I don't have enough words to describe what I feel listening to this. It is absolutely mesmerizing . Every note she touches, she feels and makes you feel too. This whole adrenalin coming from inside... just perfect...

  • Perfect interpretation!

  • This lady has it all. I've never heard Grieg played better...or as well. Even superlatives are simply not up to the task of doing justice to her performances.

  • This is THE best version of this concerto ever - not only is Valentina's playing the best by far, but the Seoul Philharmonic has also performed this the best out of all orchestras that I have heard.

  • @anonymous176932

Although i do digress, I am no expert, and no, I do not think myself better than either greig, or valentina. I prefer Rubinstiens' rendition of this peice. Again, just an opinion. If you so desire to pursue this, and ask me my reasons, I will be more than happy to say. A very good rendition, but I don't think it is the best of all time.

  • @anonymous176932 I concur! The Seoul Philharmonic performed flawlessly!

  • Honestly, best concerto ever written.

  • @crayZsaaron I respectfully disagree.

  • @crayZsaaron I wholeheartedly agree. I used to play a "condensed" version of this on piano from sheet music, but I never heard the whole E. Grieg song until the 1980s. I learned to play "Smatrold" or "Puck" when I was 10, but this song is just......wow, one of my favourite songs of ALL TIME! And I'm an "old" musician playing keyboards and bass back in the 80s/90s hard rock, country, and jazz and early hip-hop. But this song takes the cake!

  • @AIKevorkian It is not a "song" my dear friend, not that i am being critical, just a observation,

  • @davidoff9764 If you're going to be a pedant about it; I think you'll find it's "an" observation.

  • i heard several coughs in the background! dislike! dislike! DISLIKE!!

    just kidding :D

  • This is by far my favorite classical song ever!

  • When it comes to apologetically grand music such as the insurmountable Grieg, Lisitsa knows best !!

  • Valentina Lisitsa, the best pianist :-)

  • not only is it lisitsa, but SEOUL PHILHARMONIC! go korea :)

  • The conductor is so hilarious!

  • Perfetta esecuzione! Musica incantevole!

  • Do the string players perform a feint in the beginning?

  • @mitsoz Nope, they do a pizzicato note. (Plucked.)

  • is she performing using a boesendorfer piano?

  • great post

  • GRANDE VALENTINA LISITSA, EXTRAORDINARIA, DE OTRO PLANETA.

  • BRAVO!!! VALENTINA. ÚNICA.

  • Have a banana at at 1:05 .....lol

  • @LordLolinghamThe3rd I just sang that and found your comment hahaha :D

  • ectasy

  • Everybody in the orchestra are justin bieber heh lol

  • Best version I´ve heard.

  • She certainly has that mistake around 5:59, and I also noticed at 2:28-2:29 she drops the left hand on the last part of that descending series. While she has some technical flaws, I do like her interpretations usually.

  • @fendrake Blah blah blah. Show me a performance without any technical flaws, and I'll show you a very boring performance.

Horowitz made a lot of "technical flaws", too, and his technique as a whole wasn't that great to look at. But for some odd reason, people didn't care

I like this performance. It's different than the usual. I freely admit that I prefer Rubinstein's interpretations of the work, but that's just my personal taste, and Ms. Lisitsa is certainly excellent.

  • @ongaku734

    Yes it is

  • I'm not any specialist, so I'm not sure if I'm saying a nonsense. But I've listened this piece played by several orchestras and pianists, and the only thing i know is that I've liked this one a lot, and not only because of Valentina but also the orchestra and the director.

  • 素晴らしい

  • There's a gunshot at around 6:30. I wonder who got shot.... :))))

The flute part in 3 minor is the best!

  • it's there a "love this song" button?

  • @Filip6o6 I love this song as much as I love Justin Bieber's latest cello sonata.

  • @Filip6o6 nope because this isn't a song.

  • @Filip6o6 there would be... if this were a freaking SONG!

  • @Filip6o6 Nope, there is no "love this song" button. In this case specially because this isn't a song, but a piece of music.

  • @masterd000 Well excuse my english , i`m from Romania . But you can eat shit if you`re so damn smart

  • @Filip6o6: how about "you can love it but this is not a song this is a piece of music" ?

  • @BrillanteBunny oh c`mon man , give me a brake , I`m from romania ... how the fuck should i know that you are so sensible?.in my country they would call it song , so i just translated

  • @BrillanteBunny at least be grateful that i`m not just another justin beiber fan and i love a PIECE OF MUSIC

  • Precise and powerful

  • I know next to nothing about orchestra but my god if someone can play such a lengthy piece of music on the piano like that without any paper guiding them then they are seriously impressive to the everyday joe

  • this isnt loading fast enough... hmmmmpphh ;( i guess imma have to watch rubinstien play it.

  • Our school's symphonic band played this song at one of their fall concerts. We got a donated piano worth almost 100 grand and our music teacher was lucky enough to borrow the music from his old college instead of paying the outrageous 400 dollars per piece. I practically stopped breathing when his son played it. It was seriously the most amazing song I've ever heard and it was played with so emotion, my mom started tearing up.

  • Valentina is an Angel come down from Heaven to let hear what angels play.

  • Leif Ove Andsnes can plays this piece much better (and he looks much better, too....).

  • I have studied this piece over 10 years and performed it over 8 years. All I can say is excellent, she had very flowing arpeggios and notes. And she understands when and where to put stress on the notes. One thing however that I am not fond of is that unlike pieces such as Rachmaninoff Concerto 3, lets say you mess up on Rach3 one note perhaps. It wouldn't make a big deal. But at 5:59-5:60, she played the wrong note. It is not a big deal, but then again Grieg..you don't mess up on. Still good.

  • @TheCriticPiano yea she played a G instead of A - but it doesn't matter :) she is still amazing :D

  • @sn00pyiscool I agree with you 100 %. And I also commented on her positive moments. But an artist needs to know his or her's flaws to grow. And it was a flaw. Nevertheless EXCELLENT!

  • @TheCriticPiano You think she didn't know her "flaw" the second she made it, can you play it better than her? Just sayin.

  • @Omnipotentash Excuse me. Are you ignorant enough to have ignored all of my positive comments. Or are you one of those people who get insulted over one constructive comment. Lisitsa is a genious, and I will contradict anyone who says otherwise. She plays sublimely but she had a mistake and I had the fortune of descibring it. Calm down. And maybe I can play better than her.

  • @TheCriticPiano

I listened this concert many times and you are right at 5:59-5:60, she played the wrong note.

  • @gbogdanoski yep got that but a stunning performance nontheless

  • Wao!!!

Una Mujer tocando Rachmaninov, eso sí es de respetar, no porque sea mujer, pero eso le da doble mérito!!!

    Felicidades!!

  • @KIKNIS

pero no hay que respetar la mas que un hombre por haber hecho la misma cosa

  • AMAZING!

    she's so good

  • it would be more exciting if she would take a cello between her spread legs and play Bach - Cello Suite No.1 i-Prelude !!

  • I saw her play Rachmaninov live in Spoakne Washington! It was AMAZING!

  • Believe Valentina's performance is actually a great one. Her technique is impeccable but foremost there is an immense compenetration with Grieg's emotions and musical ideas. Unfortunately the orchestra does not make justice to her interpretation. The strings, in particular 1st and 2nd violins are just horrible. It's absolutely annoying to hear here and there out of tune notes smashing beautiful moments (i.e. minutes 1:30 to 1:33 to give an example). Bravo for Valentina though.

  • @classicalfan135 I didn't hear anything wrong with the strings at the coordinates you've mentioned, what exactly did they do wrong?

  • Every piece Ive seen you play inevitebley becomes one of, if not my favorite interpretation.

  • @EFAJE Agreed!

  • Valentinta has this rare combination of power and temperament of Richter, pianism and charming of Horowitz, and a beautiful and romantic touch that makes her unique nowadays.

    .

Martha, I'm sorry to tell you but your trone has been relieved.

  • Why do the orchestra players have sheet music but the pianist has to play off by heart?

  • @roseism: Very good question. I'll try to answer as far as I know (I'm not a musician).

First, that's already the difference between a soloist and a regular musician.

Second, from rehearsals I have seen, musicians write feedback notes on the sheets following instructions from the conductor. They need to see these notes during the performance.

For the rest, I guess it is pretty much a general reference, just in case. They know the piece quite well already, of course.

  • @moozain You seem to be implying that the orchestra players have not memorized their music / know the music very well. That is not true. In any decent orchestra every player is a musician of the highest calibre. In the berlin philharmonic, every player could easily be a soloist. The distinction you make between a "soloist" and a "regular musician" seems rather demeaning. I'm sure you didn't intend to, but just be wary of dismissing orchestra players that way.

  • @roseism I have no idea. I asked my teacher and she said she didn't have a clue either.

  • @roseism

I believe it's pretty much standard that you do not read while giving a concert. If the soloist doesn't know every single note in the piece he/she really should not be on stage. Also, reading takes away from the impression that the piece is coming from within.

The orchestra has music because all the instruments have to act as one. They mark notes like moozain said because if one or two players should stand out, then it wouldn't be a "piano" concerto.

  • @roseism The pianist doesn't HAVE to, it's just an elitist tradition. There are some successful soloists who occasionally use the music.

  • @roseism because the pianist is the main solo; she can play however she wants

the orchestra's job is to create harmony with her and play according to her tempo and her dynamics. so they can't play "by heart" because everyone would have their own interpretation. instead they depend on the conductor by watching him.

also, if the soloist makes a note mistake - whatever, it happens. but if a violinist plays a note half step lower it messes up the entire harmony.

  • @roseism sometimes orchestras will be playing 2-3 different pieces a week, so they don;t have time to memorize all the pieces! on the other hand, a soloist would have been working on their repertoire for a long time.

  • @roseism

Piano players usually learn their pieces by dissection and memorization over a lengthy span of time; most advanced string players are given a piece, a week, and they have to play this piece by the end of the week whilst learning other pieces simultaneously. You also wouldn't put a pianist on stage who doesn't completely know the piece they're soloing...

  • 4:26 WOW!!! MARAVILLOSA.

  • Amazing, superbe. Nothing less. I just finished with Rubinstein performing the same Grieg's concert and turned to Valentina. Let me say that she seemed only more vigorous and quick, considering she's less aged, but equally inspired and grandiose. My god, I lost my 74 years not learning classical piano...

  • power power and more power... fingers like the wings of an angel

  • I don't mean to make fun of him, but the conductor looked like he was going to sneeze the whole time =P. What a great performance by everyone!

  • breathtaking.

  • Valentina is an epitome of a genius can be created. She is an amazing pianist but more than that she is an amazing human being.

  • MARAVILLOSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Exelente interprete,en un concierto sublime

  • Is this from one of her DVDs (available for purchase) ? If so which one ?

  • Comment removed

  • simply brilliant

  • Magnifique!

  • Grande Valentina....brava...piena di espressione...un brano di musica classica....meraviglioso....suonato meravigliosamente.

  • You can on the same page find Arthur Rubinstein play the same.

THAT,s just one example how good Valentina is.

Did you and James Judd agree the tempo in first mov? I think perfect

    Johannes Ostenfeld

  • this made me cry :)

  • i love the sound of this steinway !

  • @gouloum2222

I take that back, it looks to be a Hamburg Steinway.

  • I am prowd to be from the same country as Grieg =)

  • Siempre es una delicia escuchar a una mujer al piano. Gracias Valentina Lisitsa por transmitirnos tu amor por la música.

  • i love you Valentina

  • I hope to see her with Hilary Hahn, soon. It's difficult keeping up with Hilary's tour schedule this year.

  • I guess this one is ok
