yeah!!!!!!!!!!! who is playing!!!!!!!! who the fuck can play like this!!!!!!!!!!!!only one guy! only him! PETER BERNSTEIN!!!!!!!! so many guitarists play so meny notes but only this guy can say so much without showing of, Peter your a realy special player! greetings from Austria!!!!!
I play the sax but I find in PBernstein one of the most inspiring musicians in the jazz world.
The first solo I transcribed was Nobody Else but Me from '95 Signs of Life (i played guitar back then)...I still know how to whistle it :))) I just wanted to show some respect for the man here. thanks Peter.
@zzajbird: I totally agree that Bernstein is truly an excellent jazz guitarist....just a little surprised that neither you or anyone else gave recognition to Mr. Alexander here. He, too is one of the best around today.
you're right, he is:) I get inspiration and learn a lot from listening to sax players, and Eric is no exception. It's just so obvious to me that he's such a great musician, because I play the same instrument, that I don't have the need to say it (or even forget it).
True, we should make it clearer: Eric, you rule!
but personally I don't have the same relationship with Peter's music. He was one of the first musicians that I studied when I was learning jazz basics...
@zzajbird its really makes you a better musician, if you transcribed solos from other instruments. i am a guitarplayer and i transcribe mostyl sax solos. sax is a big influence for me. when i play sometime i imagine to play a sax, instead of a guitar.then the feeling changes for. in the end, it doesnt matter what instrument you play. its just an instrument, a tool for music. we play the same notes, just with other tools :)
Be pretty daring for four guys, none of which are named Peter Bernstein, to name their band "The Alexander-Bernstein Group," Don't you think? I think it's probably him.
what i admire most about peter bernstein is that he never ever, not ONE single time seems to be playing a note that would be anything close to unintentional. his phrasing is impeccable, and he's always on top of what he's doing. speaking of pure technique, there are better players (metheny anyone?), but when it comes to note choice, taste, development of motives etc etc, he's surely on par with the best.
Bernstein is a superb player and possesses great technique as well as feel. The "nothing unintentional" suggests that he is stiff or too deliberative in his playing. He is a creative improviser who works within a musical frame of reference but I don't think he is constricted or excessively deliberative in his playing. As you say, he has impeccable taste and the phrasing and note selection emerges organically from the process.
certainly so, and i by no means intended to indicate anything different. what i meant by "nothing unintentional" is that whatever he is playing sounds so "logic", for want of better word, AS WELL AS emotionally rich, and beautiful. by no means am i trying to take away from his great, great playing. you sure got me wrong there, buddy ;-)
I studied with Matt Jorgensen, and Chuck Deardorf was one of my professors in college and I was fortunate to play some shows with him. These are amazing people for sure.
i wish there were more guitarists in this world who were as unafraid as mr. bernstein to play less, instead of firing off all those flashy, unimaginative licks 90% of the time. that, plus his ability to develop his lines so effortlessly into melody after melody after melody are what make him stand out head and sholders above the rest (save a couple few people mayba, but VERY few), in my opinion. what a god amongst men.
You are soooooh right, Bluepowder! Just looking at some other guitarists on YouTube, and had to come and view Peter again for some 'fresh air'. Great technique and sound, used to produce music, not a circus act like some players think they are in
How can you say he doesn't have a distinct sound? I can recognize his sound within 2 or 3 notes of hearing him play. Because of that, I would say he definitely has a distinct sound. Maybe I'm just not understanding exactly what you mean.
His tone might not be as distinctive and instantly recognizable as Scofield's or Frisell's, but you can tell its him by just hearing him play a few notes, which is what I think counts the most.
shepdudemush was referring to Alexander's tone on tenor. I disagree with him, as I can also tell it's Eric after a phrase or two. His tone is distinctive to my ears, but maybe that's because I've been listening to him for many years.
was driving to Atlantic City back in 2001 to hear Diana Krall. Was listening to Friday night jazz on NPR and heard this great sax player doing this great tune, "Was Sweetness". Had to grab a piece of scrap paper while driving to write down his name...I have so many of his CDs now and just got "Temple of Olympus Zeus". He is just great! Thanks for the video.
Here's some inside trivia. Why do Peter and Eric sound so great together? They shared an apartment together in NYC for the summer while Eric was in college. Hey Brad Mehldau was there too, cool.
I agree. Additionally, what a boring and uncreative song they are playing. They are good players, for sure, but compared to the creativity of the older bop generation, these guys are kinda amature.
im guess your talking about head when you say boring and uncreative, which i can kindof agree with, except i dont give a shit about the head. its the solos that make up the song, and the solos were creative as hell. and when you make the reference to the bop generation players being creative, the only creative bop players were the ones who pioneered it, most of the rest were just copycats who imitated the style bird and diz and powell created
I just love YouTube. Where else would you find clips of Eric Alexander or Joe Magnarelli? If someone could post a clip of Jim Snidero or Lou Donaldson...
