used to play blues theme when I DJed & people would run up to ask what it was. it was a popular favorite along with the wild angels soundtrack. folks even loved the mike curb congregation! mike had it all down years before polyphonic spree...
I understand that Davey had a gig with Mike Curb in the late '60's doing soundtracks for the "B" biker flicks, etc. It was a good move for him at the time.......as it could be a bitch for musicians........unless you were from England.
It's great to see that Davie is out and about...rockin'! His guitar style seems to bridge the gap between Dick Dale and.......Jimi Hendrix....like surf with fuzz and a psychodelic twist.
This was used as the theme to Rodney on the ROQ (KROQ 106.7 FM Pasadena, CA) when I was a lad. I would stay up Sunday nights after Dr. Demento to hear Rodney Bingenheimer and The Young Marquis and Stanley. Of course, I found the vinyl soundtrack to WILD ANGELS years back, and play if often! Viva Davie Allen and the Arrows! (the movie aint that great...)
I learned this riff on my Radio Shack Realistic MIJ Gibson copy ""electric geetar"" w FUZZ back in the 70s! This, Little Black Egg, Sunshine of Your Love, and Smoke On The Water were a MUST!
Uh, you guys wouldn't know a good guitar player from your elbow. That song is embarassingly simplistic........I bet he wrote it when he was 14 years old....cause it sounds like it was written by a 14 year old. And it's NO mystery to anybody that knows anything about music why he ISNT mentioned in the same breath as Dick Dale or the Ventures.
I`ve seen a group on a cable access show called "The Fuzztones" do a kick-ass version of this track,so...this is the origional...this kicks ass better than the cover!!
Great guy. We corresponded awhile back and I told him how influencial The Arrows have been in my life. What really grabbed me was how cool and down to Earth he is. I ended up buying every one of his albums and Davie autographed them all for me! Just love the band and everything they've produced. Go Arrows!!!!
Thats what I thought. That old video of them doing this they look like kinda like mods with their fancy suite jackets and what not. Doesn't quite sound the same as the film. I wish I'd been around to see it at the time!
Killer song, so simple and brilliant. If this song doesn't make people want to play guitar for the pure fun of it, I say never buy a guitar then.
I've been playing 17 years now and last night played along with Blues Theme at least 4 times. I can play WAY more technical but there is beauty in the simplicity. It gets the job done. Hypnotic, driving, catchy...and fuzzy :)
Ya know, I so loved this song that "Born to be wild" brought me down. I still to this day don`t care for it. Its almost "bubblegum" compared to "blues theme"
Agree 100%. It's hard to believe the man could top his own work of nearly 40 years ago, but he's caught here doing just that. Definitely one of the greatest rock instrumentals of all time, by a surf/fuzz guitarist par excellence. Thanks for posting this!
The original recording of Blues Theme WAS recorded on Fender guitars. The whole things confusing as the band are pictures holding Mosrites on the cover of the Blues Theme album.
Agreed. Dick Dale of the Del-Tones owned the very first 100 watt Fender amp ever made it was a custom job by Leo Fender. Leo was a big fan of the California surf scene. Fender get a brighter sound than Marshall and a cleaner sound too.
Thats definitely Fender tone he's got. Fender amps and guitars are usually quite versatile in what you can use them for. I'll take a Fender tube amp over any other.
My Friend and I learned this Song around 1969, We had an Old Supro Amp and He had JUST bought a Guild Foxy Lady Fuzz Tone We had it down pretty good,The first Effect on any Recording was Marty Robbins ,'Don't Worry but Me", Something went wrong with the Amp or Speaker, there are NUMEROUS Stories!!, One says Speaker another said Amp blew, in any event the Engineer like it and kept it, so There another Rock and Roll Moment in history.....:)
you're probably right, though the tuning stock & the tail piece look slightly "un-fenderlike" (actual word?). anyways, i know he used to play mosrites back in the 60's. i have several of his old albums on vinyl. yeah, i'm a geezer.
the song "blues theme" is from the movie "the wild angels". i not only have a video of the movie, i also managed to find the soundtrack album on cd about ten years ago. check it out if you can find it, its great.bruce dern is a dope smoking, glue sniffing burnout that makes the whole movie, not to mention fonda, nancy sinatra and diane ladd, who was pregnant with laura dern during the filming of this movie.one of roger corman's best.
"The Wild Angels" was successful enough to spawn two official soundtrack albums. I found the most popular version many years ago at the Salvation Army Store for a whopping fifty cents.
I used to listen to this in the sixties with my older cousin driving around in his Dodge Dart. Really brings back memories of the swinging sixties when life was really an adventure !
I have a 66' album of David Allen and the Arrows. This cat is definately BOSS. I'm glad that so many of these unsung heros from back in the day are getting some recognition now.
This kind of music was what you listened to if you wanted to stay away from that bubble gum crap. Long live rock!
Glad you guys dig this. I just posted a clip from another Davie Allan show I taped on July 15, The Toxic Terror. Keep watching my posts for more Davie and other shrederific surf bands. Davie Rules!
Thanks for posting this! fantastic. you are most right. davie should be placed right up there with dale, link wray, duane eddy and the ventures in the general concenus of great guitarists.
We thought We were the only one who loved, or even REMEMBERED, this song! Thank you!

Damn right. I'll take "Blues' Theme" over ANYTHING Rusty Cooleyt has EVER recorded EVER.
This tune should be on Guitar Hero. I don't know if it's downloadable... I play real guitar. :-)
