I say this because he doesn't seem in control. He's all over the place. The whole idea behind hamlet is that he's in control of his "madness" (I essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft {which I have proudly tattoo'd on my left inner bicep, but that is besides the point}), but this scene just makes him seem fully daft and loopy and not having any idea what he's doing.
Kenneth Brannagh also likes LOTS OF ANGRY YELLING, which in my opinion takes away from
This scene, more than any other, convinced me that this was the best production of Hamlet ever. The manic energy, and barely repressed violence in this scene is great. Without boring anyone with the details I will say that I have some background in psychological studies, and can say that his performance reminded me very much of the symptoms associated with Bordeline Personality Disorder...it's uncanny.
I am so in love with this movie, especially this scene. It's so easy to relate to; we all have people that claim to be our friends and then act completely the opposite. I don't think I'd ever yell at them with as much.... sheer awesomeness as Kenneth Branagh's Hamelt, though. XD
I love how Guildenstern and Horatio exchange looks at 1:30. After all they were all Wittenburg buddies, and the use of Horatio consistently in the play really brings out his and Hamlet's friendship well.
Do you think that any characters actually buy Hamlet's pretended insanity? He's been sane for years prior to the play, why would they accept the sudden change?
Polonius does, at least, but I don't think Rozencrantz and Guildenstern do.
I love this scene, because I think he's funny! Oh, I understand what's going on and what the play is about, but nonetheless, I think it's funny when the good guy intentionally makes a fool of himself, knows exactly what's he doing for the right reason/cause, and gets away with it! I think it's cool!
His transition from yelling to his greeting to Polonius is one of my favorite parts of this movie. Also, trying to picture that camel/weasel/whale cloud.
Inspired by your comment, I have opened up Paint and created something that is almost in the shape of a camel, backed like a weasel, and very like a whale. It's the stupidest thing. I'm going to try to send it to you.
By the way, I did see a cloud the other day that looked like a camel, a weasel, a rabbit, a dragon, and a swordfish all at once, but sadly, not quite like a whale.
This is definately one of my favourite scenes from Hamlet, a culmination of his "antic disposition" and perhaps his real madness, along with his clever "playing" of Roz and Guild.
I LOVE KENNETH BRANAGH
This film brought together two things i am OBSESSED with....Kenneth Branagh and William Shakespeare :D
I love 1:42 how he treats them like shit. Hamlet knows they think he is crazy so Hamlet plays them so well like a pipe. I guess that is the whole point of this scene and Kenneth effectively plays his role well.
Kenneth is absolutely amazing in this role. I couldn't think of a single person better. Better yet, I think this summer, he's directing a version of Hamlet in London and having Jude Law play Hamlet. That'll be amazing, but this movie is absolutely stunning. I need to get myself a copy.
I saw it the first time at 15 years of age in italian and I loved it. now I'm 19 and I think everybody should read and see Hamlet during the adolescence because it allows you to think faster than other people.. kenneth is great!
I would like to add that the first time I watched Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet it" hath struck me into amazement and admiration" for its several and perfect long shots. GREAT!
I dislike Brannagh's version.

2:17 And from this point Hamlet's true rage and disgust for these former friends comes out.
2:43 Perhaps the greatest emotional switches in the history of Shakespearean film. Branagh cannot be beat as Hamlet.
