  • I dislike Brannagh's version.

I say this because he doesn't seem in control. He's all over the place. The whole idea behind hamlet is that he's in control of his "madness" (I essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft {which I have proudly tattoo'd on my left inner bicep, but that is besides the point}), but this scene just makes him seem fully daft and loopy and not having any idea what he's doing.

Kenneth Brannagh also likes LOTS OF ANGRY YELLING, which in my opinion takes away from

  • ~my wits diseased~

    lol, I love that line!

  • I love the sudden transition from his raging "YET YOU CANNOT PLAY UPON ME!" and then immediately goes "God bless you sir" at 2:43.

  • I am tame Sir pronounccccccce! lolololol loooooove it

  • god bless u sir!

  • I always wish, now, that I had a pipe on hand when someone thinks me daft, just to use this speech...

  • This scene, more than any other, convinced me that this was the best production of Hamlet ever. The manic energy, and barely repressed violence in this scene is great. Without boring anyone with the details I will say that I have some background in psychological studies, and can say that his performance reminded me very much of the symptoms associated with Bordeline Personality Disorder...it's uncanny.

  • @gestalt422 I wouldn't mind hearing about it :)

  • "SIIR!!!! I LACK ADVANCMENT!!!! :'-(

  • Do you see! Yonder cloud that's almost in the shape of a camel!! (by th' mass, and 'tis like a camel indeed.)

Methinks its like a weasel!!! (Tis backed like a weasel...)

Or like a whale.... (Very like a whale!!!)

Then I will come to my mother by and by!

  • how he starts to dance. oh, MY LORD. branagh is magnificent.

  • I love the instant change of mood when Polonius walks in :)

  • I am so in love with this movie, especially this scene. It's so easy to relate to; we all have people that claim to be our friends and then act completely the opposite. I don't think I'd ever yell at them with as much.... sheer awesomeness as Kenneth Branagh's Hamelt, though. XD

  • Favourite scene!!

  • goodness. this man's brilliant!

  • anyone else love hamlet's laugh at :15?? ;D

  • 2:17 And from this point Hamlet's true rage and disgust for these former friends comes out.

2:43 Perhaps the greatest emotional switches in the history of Shakespearean film. Branagh cannot be beat as Hamlet.

  • A bloody genius indeed. Bloody. Genius.

  • I almost got interned on a psychiatric because I've listened to this so many times that I have became mad.

  • I think this is the best-played scene in this brilliant film.

  • I really have to see all of this. I really really do.

  • I love how quickly he reacts to Polonius when he walks in. lol Ken is great in this movie.

  • "I am tame, sir. PRONOUNCEUUUHHH!"

  • Definitely one of my favorite scenes in the film. I could watch this all day.

  • 1:39 I love how Hamlet just shoves that guy out of the way. Hell, I love everything Hamlet does! All hail Kenneth Branagh!!

  • High.

  • @Kampex Wrong.

  • @maj1986 ur wrong.

  • @Kampex No sir it is you who has mistepped. :)

  • Branagh is my favorite Hamlet, I love this version.

  • 0:41 "My wits. Diseased! :D"

    I love kenneth.

  • branagh has got the antic disposition down to a science - it's amazing I'm actually writing a paper on him right now

  • This scene cracks me up! Hamlet's expression when he says "My wit's diseased!" is perfection.

  • I love how Guildenstern and Horatio exchange looks at 1:30. After all they were all Wittenburg buddies, and the use of Horatio consistently in the play really brings out his and Hamlet's friendship well.

  • Do you think I'm easier to be played upon than a PIPE!!!

  • @asuzette "Do you think I'm easier to be played upon than a PIPE!!!"

Haha, man, I love that line.

  • Do you think that any characters actually buy Hamlet's pretended insanity? He's been sane for years prior to the play, why would they accept the sudden change?

Polonius does, at least, but I don't think Rozencrantz and Guildenstern do.

  • @paperbullet1945 Well his father died ad his girl friend broke up with him, I think they have some good reasons to believe he went bonkers

  • I love this scene, because I think he's funny! Oh, I understand what's going on and what the play is about, but nonetheless, I think it's funny when the good guy intentionally makes a fool of himself, knows exactly what's he doing for the right reason/cause, and gets away with it! I think it's cool!

  • Ok Branagh is the swarvest, craziest and sweetest Hamlet, hands down!

  • His transition from yelling to his greeting to Polonius is one of my favorite parts of this movie. Also, trying to picture that camel/weasel/whale cloud.

  • @Kokitsune

Inspired by your comment, I have opened up Paint and created something that is almost in the shape of a camel, backed like a weasel, and very like a whale. It's the stupidest thing. I'm going to try to send it to you.

By the way, I did see a cloud the other day that looked like a camel, a weasel, a rabbit, a dragon, and a swordfish all at once, but sadly, not quite like a whale.

  • Sblood! do you think I am easier to be played upon than a pipe

    Might translate to:

Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my pokerface

  • Lol.

  • lol@ Polonius "Very like a whale"

  • he brings a singular aspect of his stage experience to the film that is so rare, it's refreshing.

  • delicious indeed.

  • My God! His acting is... juicy. There's no other way to describe it! He is without a doubt, my favorite actor.

  • This is definately one of my favourite scenes from Hamlet, a culmination of his "antic disposition" and perhaps his real madness, along with his clever "playing" of Roz and Guild.

    I LOVE KENNETH BRANAGH

This film brought together two things i am OBSESSED with....Kenneth Branagh and William Shakespeare :D

    <3

  • "my wit's diseased :) :) :)"

    brilliant!

  • if you must have a predilect movie, this is mine

  • I love this scene. As I read the play I invisioned this sort of acting.

  • I love 1:42 how he treats them like shit. Hamlet knows they think he is crazy so Hamlet plays them so well like a pipe. I guess that is the whole point of this scene and Kenneth effectively plays his role well.

  • I love the little gasp from Guildenstern as Hamlet grabs him at 2:03. In fact, I love this whole movie. It's mindblowing.

  • Amazing, huh.

  • Act III Scene II,

    Very like a whale

  • i just love that little dance he does...

  • "Will you play upon this pipe."

Hamlet reads these guys like a book

  • "-God bless you sir!"

    rofl

  • Kenneth is absolutely amazing in this role. I couldn't think of a single person better. Better yet, I think this summer, he's directing a version of Hamlet in London and having Jude Law play Hamlet. That'll be amazing, but this movie is absolutely stunning. I need to get myself a copy.

  • Ken is bloody brilliant! This is one of my favourite scenes, Ken just portrayed Hamlet perfectly... I love the little random "Ah, the recorders..."

  • This is brilliant: as tediousoldfools writes, it's ONE SHOT. Hilarious to boot! "My mother, you say" is hilarious!!

  • I love this video!

    best Hamlet ever

  • This is the best version of Hamlet ever!

  • I saw it the first time at 15 years of age in italian and I loved it. now I'm 19 and I think everybody should read and see Hamlet during the adolescence because it allows you to think faster than other people.. kenneth is great!

  • =D I love this. ^_^ My favorite parts are 0:16-0:44 and then 1:38-2:57.

  • I would like to add that the first time I watched Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet it" hath struck me into amazement and admiration" for its several and perfect long shots. GREAT!

  • This performance is a piece of work of humour. I bloody love it!
