  • standout feature of te video....the adio edit....well done

  • How does it cope in low light conditions? Can you buy an external light and plug it in? Great review, very informative!!!!

  • Love your videos!

  • I WANT ONE NOW!!!!!!!

  • When you showed your footage, did you use a tripod or were you handheld?

  • First impression of this man when the video starts..."THIS IS SPARTA"

  • Frames are jittery, i dont know about this Cam but it maybe cause of too fast shutter speed..

  • im suppose to be gettin this camcorder for christmas, hope i get it

  • no 1080P?

  • hi Blunty, your review is very helpful.

How would you compare it to the VG20 or even the dhr-ax2000.?

  • Comment removed

  • Best Camera Ever.

  • @Blunty3000 is this still your favorite camcorder out there?

  • Would like to have seen some low light shots and more examples of the most shallow DOF as possible with the kit lens. Yes, one can put a 1.4 on it with adapter, but how does the 3.5 kit do?

All in all it's a great "sales pitch" though. I was looking at a NEX-5 (5N) for video, but all these extras are tough to ignore.

  • @Blunty3000 Will the DISP Button clear the sceen through HDMI Output? Thanks

  • is there audible noise picked up from the lens when zooming in and out ?

  • Are you going to get the NEX VG20?

  • Thanks for the good review man, NEX-VG10 will be my next investment.

  • Enjoyed the video, first I saw from you Blunty. Love the energy.

Been about a year since it's release, was wondering if you would recommend it for a new starter in film making? I say 'new' I'm off the back of a Uni course and currently in search for my own equipment, and my first camera. Been looking at this one for awhile, like the look of it, but could do with the assurance that you'd agree for it to be a good first purchase.

  • camera sex....

  • Haha! Great video - did you get one in the end? I have one and am still trying to figure it all out. (that's bad I suppose - to have one and not truly understand it all seems such a waste). If you do have one I'd love to see a howto settings vid : ) I've subbed anyways

  • Which Fisheye lens should i get for this camera?+??

  • DO THEY CALL U BLUNTY BECAUSE OF THE MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF WEED YOU SMOKE????

  • Can someone give me a clear answer about the frame rate? I can find on many forums that it's not a good cam for fast pan movements because it shoots only 25p (Europe). But in the manual I found on the website of Sony they say: 1080 50i-compatible device MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 1920 × 1080/50i 1440 × 1080/50i

  • The juggler in the video "I am the juggler of your dreams", was actually in Americas Got Talent Summer 2011. Yup!

  • Just 2 questions.

Does it record in 24 fps and 60 fps?

    and

How well does it perform in low light ?

  • @clonemagic It does not record in 24 or 60 fps, but just wait a month or 2 cause a new version of this camerais coming out. its the the sony nex vg20 and it has exactly what your asking for.

  • i can get better videos with my Canon EOS 7D and a good lens like 85mm F/1.4 or 70-200L.

  • Blunty - I enjoy your reviews and have made purchasing decisions based on them.

Sony have just announced the release of the NEXVG20. 1080/50p,25p (yeeehaaa !), E lens, 16Mpixels, and replacing some of the menu options with hard buttons. Get your hands on one sunshine ! It's brilliant.

    EJ

  • I do like sony, but times have changed. (VX2000) It's going to be hard to convince me to give up my Canon 5D Mark II for this new sony. There is a reason why major film and PR companies are using these Canon DSLR, It Just Works! Please people do your research before committing to a Brand of Camera.

  • Hey Blunty, have you tried to create some 24p shots? I am thinking about to get me the European version. I imagine that it is not that big a deal to convert 50i to 24p. What do you think?

  • 6:46

well I doubt that it was straight out of the camera since i dont think that there was constantly someone playing a violin behind you XD

  • so let's see:

take the sony fx7 (or something close), turn it digital (fx7 uses tape), snap on a permanent 35mm lens adapter (without the extra bulk or work that goes into having a lens adapter on a standard video camera), and make it only $2000.

    is that about accurate?

    if so,

    that's awesome!!!

I'm still going with the hmc150 (for reasons that are my own) but this camera does look like the starting point for a new "breed" of cameras.

  • You're tone of voice made this SO entertaining to watch.

  • I read a few comments on here. I got the SONY NEX VG-10 and absolutely LOVE IT. I'm and indie filmmaker who would never shoot off a DSLR. To me it looks unprofessional when your using a camera that is meant for still photography(Actually used the Canon 7D and we were laughed at because a woman had one and said so does this mean I can make a movie, she was just a passer by.) I disagree with the SONY being like DSLR, this camera is AMAZING. And you ALWAYS crunch it down to 24p in post.

  • @timeknowsfilms lmao it looks unprofessional , because all it counts is to look professional right?... indie filmaker he says ...roflmao

  • What? Did you even read what your wrote half wit?

  • @timeknowsfilms go buy a RED you need to look professional right now...lmao

  • Meh... for $1900.00 I would rather have a Canon 7D w/kit lens that shoots 24p & 60p, plus is a world class still camera and you get the choice of world class Canon lenses.

For a sensor camera like this Sony I'd rather have the Panasonic GH2 micro 4/3 camera, which actually has a better image than the Canon 7D and many say rivals the Canon 5D MKII, especially a hacked GH2. You can get a GH2 body for $900.00.

  • amazing review you defiantly won me over :D

i kinda feel bad that i sorta dont have to "earn" the right to own such a great piece of hardware as in use crummy camcorders to truly appreciate something so good

i hope i do it this camcorder justice :D

  • This is exactly what I'm currently saving up for............a purely designed and dedicated camcorder and not a top end DSLR that happens to take video. It's a good job I've got a Quad core PC being delivered soon to handle the files swiftly, my poor old laptop would struggle.

  • Awesome review, and funny

  • I personally rather my Canon T3i than this Sony, is cheaper, smaller and yep i love those rigs.

  • Do you think this could be a camera one would be able to use for commercial video creation such as independent film?

  • Too expensive, video isnt better either.

  • This is my dream camera, haha. Thanks for the great review, Blunty! :)

  • Cheers bounty

  • What do you think the market will look like within, say, a year? Will there be more videocameras with this manual settings, focus ring, manual optical zoom etc. for lower prices than professional cameras? Or will the manufacturers keep that market with the DSLRs?

Personally I'd like a camera like this but without this big microphone etc, and with the handling-opportunities of a videocamera, but with the same functions as a DSLR, for a good price, that would be great actually.

  • Wish i could afford it

  • @OsteBugles :)

  • It should depend on the processing speed of the sensor and the processor I guess. As the DSLR captures video from top to bottom in a scanline-like fashion. (Well, that's just as assumption.).

  • But I have a Sony HVR HD1000 which is a CMOS Shoulder Mount camera that records on DV Tapes & I don't get skewed images no matter how fast I pan!

  • Such a great product. While DSLR videography gives us the advantage of achieving that dramatic film look with shallow d.o.f., noise tolerance in low light, lens options etc, etc, there's also the down side of the washed out and blurry looking videos. It can be said that they are no different for the NEX-VG10. The biggest concern of them all should be the rolling shutter issue which skews the captured footage when we do a pan. Does the VG10 face the same problem of skewed image?

  • @Dorkmatix *ALL* CMOS sensors will suffer from "rolling shutter" effects in fast pans, it's a simple unavoidable fact of the physics of how they work...

Doesn't matter if the sensor is in a DSLR, a point and shoot, an interchangeable lens system camera or a phone, it doesn't matter what size the sensor is.

You can either shoot more skillfully to avoid the issue, or you can fix it in post, which in many cases depending on the software or plug-in, is fast simple easy and effective.

  • @Dorkmatix you forgot one main thing, on dslr's you cant shoot long videos , the sensor heats up causing noise.

  • @digitalwolves True that.

  • Great great review! Thank you very much. P.S. the song at 6:47 is the theme to "Schindler's List" haha!

  • Why am I so friggin poor???

  • I would like to know if the camera is a good device for someone interested in filming some short films. Just a begginer that wants to learn more about making films.

Sorry if I didn't spell everything correctly, I'm portuguese.

  • What Camcorder did you use to film this review???

I think NEX-VG10 must be a great choice, but how about if I only gonna film something in door with lighting??? DO I need to get such great one to do the job???

  • Quite frankly i am not interested in the rest of the features in both cameras .. what i am interested in is the quality of the image in both this and the DSLRs ... so since you have done some tests what would you say which one is better? have you uploaded and side by side test ? any info on this will be greatly appreciated

  • I would like to know how the VG10 performs re rolling-shutter issues.I want to record off a vehicle (car or motorbike) and the sea sickness rolling images are a pain with many cameras.

I also think that not having powered zoom is an absolute show stopper for me. I have a Sony XR520, which sits on an inexpensive Sony video tripod, giving me slow (creep) zoom which I use a lot in interviews etc. I can also record to either flash memory OR to the inbuilt 240GB HDD and even have GPS tagging.

  • Its a nice setup but the E mount mount lens selection is a bit limited, I'd probably use it for more general shooting and a DSLR with fast prime for more intimate shots.

  • Wow I'm drooling! I've been considering getting a DSLR to make my webshow pop, but this... OMG THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN DREAMING ABOUT!

For the past 6 years, I've been using an HDR-FX1. I make music videos for clients and was feeling that my camera was becoming outdated... but this... THIS IS JUST FANTASTIC! Thanks for the review!!

  • CAMERA SEX!

  • I'm seriously contemplating getting one of these .. because the next thing that even comes close is about $4000 more i think.

  • Blunty,I'm a songwriter/musician.I want to make my own music videos because Facebook has brought more attention to my original songs than even performing live And I use to peform a lot. If I were to take out a loan of $1500 to $2500.Would it be better for me to buy a new Camcorder like the Sony NEX-VG10? Or shop around for an old monster camera that is outdated in many ways but it's still a professional setup.Keep in mind, I'm a songwriter 1st, camera man 2nd.I want to spend more time writing :)

  • I currently use the nx5 for weddings, I may check this out for b roll..nice review and youre quite funny!..Thanks

  • Obviously, we all have our opinions. Im with him on this one. If you look up tests and comparisons, at the end of the day this camera wins. The differences in quality are minute, and this one has the most convenient layout. If you are doing professional stuff, why the hell are you using a consumer cam or a dslr?

  • Great review I am always looking for out of the box performance shoots mainly cause I'm new to all this and haven't the foggiest on editing yet so thank you btw awesome enthusiasm

  • Lol blunty

  • Thankyou for your enthusiasm. Very helpful :)

  • is it way better than sony cx700

  • Do you still feel the same way about this camera? I have been debating getting a 60D or something like that. I like the D7000, but it has some limitations. I like this the Sony and it seems like they are moving in the right direction with this one as well as the rest of the line up. Additionally, I have heard rumors that they will be introducing some innovative products, like a camera that will use any lens from Canon, Nikon, etc. Maybe Sony is the way to go for digital photography.

  • Great review and great camera

  • Blunty - that review was awesome. Thanks!

  • How sharp are the imagines. I have a sony HC9 video camera and it's not very sharp at all for an HD camera.

  • It will take an amazing photo's... because it's actually a DSLR...

  • @niksvi2 lol no. It's not a DSLR, it has no reflex mirror.

  • @tklmkan You're right....

  • Beautiful camera, huge censore, amazing microphone, ergonomics, viewfinder...Love it! No overheating problem of DSLR and more...

  • If there was a 'best person on youtube award', you would win it!

  • thank you -- im going to buy this to vid mi utube From now

  • Blunty! You rock!

  • Forgive my ignorance, looking at buying a video camera do make a fishing program and have been looking at a number of cameras including the HVR A1U - which is about in the same price class as the VG10, obviously I want something that will shoot 16:9 at HD, how would you compare those two camreas? I have been searching on the net for some comparrisons but could find any, and not guru enough to figure it out for myself :) help would be much appreciated,

    Thanks.

  • I don't get the comment about manual controls. Sure some have restrictions but all the newer canons seems to have both manual audio and video options and they seem to have more encoding/recording options(But lacking the encoding options of the NEX-VG10).

I think the real advantages here are the physical format, auto-focus, the built in mic and audio out for monitoring.

  • @agtheking You're right... you don't get it.

  • @Blunty3000 Haha you can't at least give me a clue about what you were talking about? Were you talking about easy access to the settings? What's not full or proper about the manual controls of shutter speed, lens aperture, iso and white balance of HDSLRs? I'm not really saying anything about this camera I just don't understand that criticism of dslrs.

  • @Blunty3000 These people who compare this to a DSLR are stupid, Let me see what nice features I get with a DSLR skew, artifacts, little manual settings, bad audio.

  • @Blunty3000 Can you tell me if you can adjust the audio input levels or does it just have a built in limiter? If not, how are you supposed to record a "live" band without utter distortion??? SOMEONE please answer this for me as I am very interested in buying this camera.

  • Getting this no doubt!!!

  • of course the main reason people are putting together these "monstrosity" dslr rigs is because usually their focused around the 5dmkii which BLOWS away the nex -vg10 in low light without spending the money they would have to spend for a 20 grand rig. What many of the shooters really want. This is a cute camera but doesn't deliver what the budget pros want in quality low light. Search vg10 low light comparison and it's a sort of sad. I'd love it if it had a huge sensor.

  • Looks quite good, personally from what ive seen, its not something id buy as i prefer the convenience of it being able to use video on my dslr.

  • Just ordered one and replacing a Canon GL 2

  • low light performance sucks on this one. If you shoot weddings then this is absolutely not an option.

  • @patokid If it were your primary camera, then I would be worried using it for weddings. I use 2 Z5s in my wedding shoots, and still looking at this camera to supplement the footage that I would get for my preparation, highlight etc footage.

  • You're a freak. DSLRs make your little Sony look like a toy camera.

  • @michaelclarkechannel Number one; Grow up. Number two; not only did I spend a couple weeks testing this camera but i OWN a DSLR with video capabilities (60D) So I have had every oppourtunity to directly compare the performance and usability... and no, it doesn't make this "little" Sony look like a "toy". Way to be a fantard though, Can you even SPELL objectivity let alone understand the concept? Troll harder next time you sad little Pillock.

  • @Blunty3000 Frankly, you might yourself be a little bit of a fanboy of your "proper video cameras". There's a long way from the 800$ of a 550d and the 100$ f/1.8 50mm to any camcorder which can perform even closely to their quality. The price will offen be lower even with rigs. IMO.

  • POINTLESS. Wait until you see the sony a77. The picture of VG10 can't even compare with Canon 550D. By the way, I can just use the 550d to take picture and shoot video at the same time.

  • I bought the VG10 but i'm not rlly in to cameras so I don't know wtf you guys mean by 23. something or 24fp and stuff like that but it's a gr8 video cam

  • The V10 will hold back any artist's creativity. Not being able to do 23.97 nor 59.94 is a HUGE disappointment.

Another disappointment is the fact that the VG10 does not have manual audio controls, which means pre-amp XLR converters do not work well with this unit, therefore resulting in noisier sound with a condenser mic.

  • Also the E-Mount lens is not widely supported (as of yet), you look at Canon and they have so many native lenses. The lens on the VG10 appears cheap as they don't even have focal length labels, and the zoom is very hard to work with as it feels too tight.

I'd rather go with a 60D, plus as it has EVERYTHING that the VG10 is missing for

The only one thing the VG10 has going for it is that it runs REALLY cool so there is no threat of overheating.

  • spot on blunty, i wish i had found this review instead of spending five hard months searching the market. i had cannons up on 5k euro etc, but this is excllent. im doing a 100 min doc at the moment on electro music, childs play lads and girls!!. even inside a noisey club, this thing is picking up excllent sound, if ya know drum and bass jungle music, ull know what im mean. the next exciting step for 'me' is getting different lens sizes, there are lens compatiable on the market, its cam sex!

  • This is 2000 dollars tho.. You could buy a used t2i or a t3i and add a few attachments and save over 800 dollars and have the same if not better picture quality

  • @CharmingZombie CAN'T SAY IT BETTER.

  • @Callofduty4nub This guy is my man!!

  • does it come with a memory card

  • exactly, its the pioneer of its class, therefore don't buy it. do you buy the first 3d camcorder thinking its going to be the best? no. wait until there are competitors before you buy something.

  • mmmh .. i wanted that cam, i was searching for good lowlight + that movie sharpness, but i miss motorized zoom. in your video i can see the video shaking, no nice zooming out :( .... what i also miss, is a autofocus by button. now i`m in doubt :-s ...

  • maybe I don't know jack about Modern cameras but I was really impressed with the audio capture.

  • DOES IT RECORD at 50/60 frames???????????

  • excited about this. really really great review, I'm excited as heck about getting this

  • There's a reason a DSLR costs so much along with the accessories needed to shoot video. If you're working with a limited budget then the NEX VG-10 would make sense to me, but if you're going to slam a DSLR in favor of a NEX that's pretty silly.

  • OH MAN!! SOUNDS GREAT WHEN RECORDING IN A SMALL GIG AND AS WELL GOOD IMAGE!!! I THINK I'M GOING FOR THIS FOR MY FIRST PURCHASED CAMERA IN THE MARKET, OR SHOULD I WAIT IT OUT FOR THE PRICE TO LOWER. LOL

  • Just one question can this camcorder film in progressive 1080p?

  • great review blunty. I picked up this cam a few months ago and your review really does it justice. Looking at picking up another lens for it. Would you suggest the 70-200mm 2.8 G lens or the 70-400mm?

  • way better review than the other one i found.

  • As a sails advicer, i have chosen for this camera, i know the minus points about it, still after 6 years of video experience, and testing camera's, the Sony NEX VG-10, i buy ! And this review thanks. It's saved on my iPhone, and i am also a teacher in computer science and video editing. Greetings and kindly regards, to you all,.. Manu

  • I like the way you say "proper." This was a really great review. Very comprehensive. I loved it.

  • I like the way you say "proper."

  • Can you buy these off the shelf? where would i go? best buy or something?

  • @thabiznes right now i think only online. unless you go to B&H

  • bowl of awesome... Thats inspirational...

  • How does this camera compare to the Sony HDR-AX2000?

  • rolling shutter issues?

  • Why is the Video on youtube 720p, if it supposed to be 1080p ?

  • @IanIsRofl because he chose to film in 720p, theres plenty other videos on youtube filmed with this camera in 1080

  • @IanIsRofl because he filmed it in 720p

  • What can this camera do outside of 4 way microphone stereo sound that the Panasonic DMC-GH2 can't do equally well or better? It just seems like the GH2 is a better choice though I have been happy with my Sony prosumer cameras up to this point.

  • I have the Sony NEX-3 & this seems to be just a video cam version. My cam shoots video that appears to be the same great quality at a fraction of the cost. There might be some slight differences with video options, BUT it's nothing that can't be fixed in post IMO

  • Yeah but mate, Sony should have included native 24p / Such a vital element for film makers isn't something you just hold back on. / Sony's always done this and I don't understand why.

  • no zoom motor? no point. get a T2i or Lumix if you want bad ass shallow DOF and save a lot of money. Apparently the audio blows too (AGC), no external input or manual control. This is not a replacement for the DSLR. 60i... yuck. give me 60p so I can get slow motion.

I use DSLRs and regular video cameras. I use regular video cameras BECAUSE they have small sensors (deep DOF) and zoom motors for certain dynamic looks. The XF100 would be a better choice and then supplement with a DSLR.

  • @tahoeclimber Are you serious? Did you even look at the specs or the video? It does have external input and manual control...

  • @Ajjer18 Yup, totally serious. No manual audio control, it only shoots in 1080/60i (that's 30 fields a second not 60 progressive images per second, big difference). Sure you can pull 24p and 30p out of 60i but you're not gonna get true slow motion from those frame rates. There's a mini-jack audio input... um, yay. You still have to deal with AGC (look it up). this thing is just a DSLR in a different shape with less features, for $2K. If you buy this you're blowing around $1,000.

  • I have the same question, who does this compare to the HDR-cx700v?

  • great video! :-)

  • Does this camera work well with chroma key (Green screen)?

  • @TVperson1 Every single camcorder works with the chroma key if you know how to apply it in your computer.

  • @JohnnyJackPompolla I mean doesn't pull off a key that doesn't leave horrible artefacts. You can do whatever you like in the computer, but 4:2:0 doesn't key that well at all.

  • 7:41 Full House houses =D

  • I've been informed that this camera records 30p (29.97), yet you claim it can record 24p. Did they update it, or have I been misinformed?

  • Thanks Blunty! I'm on my way to go purchase a VG-10 now.. Loved your enthusiasm and humour in this vid, and thanks so much for all the great feedback Extremely helpful!

  • What's everyone's feedback regarding NOT being able to record @ 24p w/this camera and is it really a big deal?

  • @raymejr For what I feel like is the gazzilionth time... This camera DOES do 24/25P, in fact it dos it by default, natively... It just wraps it in a 60/50 file for COMPATIBILITY'S SAKE.

  • Comment removed

  • @Blunty3000 - then you might wanna pass that around to the others who have reviewed this same camera before you, because I've already seen it stated that it doesn't....then again when you have multiple wanna-be experts all expressing their opinions, you're bound to get misinformation once and a while!

  • @Blunty3000 yeah but thats not native 24p...if youre going to make a cam that has interchangeable lens you'd think it would be able to record native 24p...it kind of contradicts the whole point of the cam..people want the 35mm dof...it would probably be the best prosumer cam if it had native 24p...just my opinion...over all it looks like it would be a great cam.

  • @Blunty3000

The manual says 30p wrapped in 60i. No 24p. Even if it does, then vintage Sony means 24.00fps instead of the REAL 23.97fps.

Look at any Canon DSLR that does 23.97, it looks so much more like film. Also the lack of 60p means you can't do artistic slow motion shots.

  • @raymejr I prefer 30p myself. 24p looks horrible if the person you're filming moves suddenly or unexpectedly.

  • Yeah, it's sad, but the VG10 seems to be a much better choice than the canons 7D or 5D. It can shoot for longer periods of time which is what i need it for and also it records stereo sound with either its internal or the external mic. No need to say more than that, the proof is in the puddin

  • Is this better than the cx700 that is coming out?

  • I WANT THIS!!!!

  • this or XR550E ?

  • Loved the review and it was very entertaining. I can say your review and video here played a big role in me actually buying this camera. i have it and love it. Thank you.

  • I think this review has convinced me to go with either the 60D or GH2. As far as funtion I think you prove why not to get the NEX-VG10.The NEX-VG10 is around $2000 which is twice the price of a the GH2 and the 60D. You can get a great rig for $1000+you mention that you didn't like going handheld with the NEX-VG10 (4:57) because it almost forces you shoot improper.Which hints that you will need a rig with this camera also.So the NEX-VG10 is still $1000 more than the DSLR+60D&GH2 image is better

  • Finally the video camera I've been waiting for. I really didn't want to get a DSLR so I can get the interchangeable lenses and I don't have the money for a prosumer camera. And although there are plenty of nice HD camcorders around 600-800, I really did not want to hold something as wimpy. Although this is about $2000 and I do hope the price goes down a bit by the time I get the cash but this is it. I want this. Thanks for the review!

  • proud dad looking for a good camcorder with good still photography in one. would the nex vg 10 take comparable pics like the canon eos t2i or would the canon d7 be better off given the limited video. or any other camcorder/camera under 2grand. suggestions please. thank-you.

  • @emma112810 If your priority is video, buy this. If your priority is stills, buy the DSLR, Simple as that.

  • @emma112810 , this is quite a purchase for the casual Dad. 2k? Get ur kids dirtbikes and grab a handy cam. Do u have an extra 2k just lying around waiting for use?

  • Nice review, but you missed some KEY points Blunty. True this SOny has a much larger sensor and has nice DOF and seems to take really nice shots, BUT common guys - I have a 3 year old Canon Vixia and I can adjust the audio levels on it (YES it has an external mic input) AND it has 60i, 30p AND 24p frame rate modes. If this is going to be touted as a "step up from camcorders" it should AT LEAST have the same options my cheaper vixia has. If Sony wants my money, they MUST add those features.

  • You should be a salesman, with your raw emotional input. Well done, son!

  • hey there guy, I was wondering whether there are any other cameras on the market sorta like the NEX with a huge sensor.

  • Can you make the LCD face you when you're filming yourself? I saw in another review that it can't

  • @starsdawn1 ... if you've already seen that you can't, why ask?
