  • I am hearing him for the first time here - absolutely lovely! One has to wonder why people like that woman talking, go to concerts. Obviously she has an IQ of about 2 below plant life. Anyone that would talk through a performance like that has to be mournfully stupid.

  • I wanna put my foot in that talkative bints mouth . . stoopid cow . . . shut your gob and listen to this master make his guitar SING

  • Beautiful! One more word, GENIUS!

  • Tommy- "this is 'somewhere over the rainbow' "

    man watching- "wah maria!"

  • Some duct tape is is in order for the woman talking during this.

  • no words to describe...

  • I cried the first time I heard this Tommy's version

  • the very best I ve ever heard it played thank you Tommy

  • sweet sweet sweet... love, joy, everything in this song... TE you do it so well ;)

  • One word- Awesome!!!

  • now i stop trying to play guitar! Cry! thats extrem good, i guess i better play the triangle in future!

  • andy mckee and tommy emmanuel are good acoustic musicians

  • FENOMEN!!!

  • hes got excellent fingers, but listen to alan holldsworth and tell me what you think!!

  • It's a song that's not too hard to play, but can only be played well if you put enough feeling into it. Tommy does just that!

  • Every musician has his own particular God given talents. Richard and Tommy will be performing together several times in 2008. Don't compare, just enjoy. We may never have the opportunity to experience this kind of guitar mastery again in our life times! Sublime entertainment!

  • Where can I find the tab to this?? please msg me.

  • damn,i've never heard of him-but i like!

  • Pretty remarkable, he never loses the theme no matter how he 'dresses it up'.

  • Tommy doing what he does best. When you see him in concert you are tempted to say "This is as good as it gets." If so, then go to a Richard Smith concert. Tommy may knock you over, but Richard Smith will KNOCK YOU OUT!! Check out the Richard Smith videos here on YouTube. In particular the one with Chet when Richard was only 12

  • Well, I've heard both live (and recently at CAAS), and I completely disagree. Richard is certainly something special, but it's widely known that Chet himself called Tommy "The best finger-style guitar player alive". I think that was a fairly informed opinion. He backed it up with CGP honors. I think that TE takes the instrument to a new level. Tommy is unique unto himself.

  • i dislike comparing musicians. it would be nice if ppl would make suggestions about listening to other musicians but stop comparing them.

any live musician with listeners/fans is a good and unique artist, even if he/she covers.

a musician does not get better or worse if he/she has more listeners/fans or earns more money or if individuals or crowds like one musician more than another or if ... whatever.

now i'll search for and listen to richard's music, thanks for the hint :o)

  • lol, the first vid i found is called "Richard Smith & Tommy Emmanuel" (U8OMOObvJdY) :o)

  • What a beautiful and moving melody. 5/5, whoever this guy is since id never heard of him before this is sooo beautiful and he puts soo much energy into it. unlike some he really puts a feeling into what he plays. Absolutely beautiful.

  • Honestly isn't his best performance, He has better works and tracks, more clean and better played. Anyway there's a better version of SOTR played only with the classical/nylon guitar solo by Jose Feliciano on his 1990 "Steppin' Out" album.

  • i can play the intro./not perfectly but wel

aaa going to se this awsome man in november so i cant wait:P

  • Wait! Is that all harmonics at the start? How the hell do you do that so fast?!

  • HAHA I htink that Tommy and Chet Atkins come up with it. Its called cascading harmonics. Basically hold down the chord and use your pointer finger and thumb to set off the harmonics 12 frets above.

  • No, it's not. It's harp harmonics mixed with fretted notes. It sounds like a harp, hence harp harmonics. Essentially, you play the harmonic, then a fretted note, harmonic, fretted note and so on, with some variations.

  • Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Tommy Emmanuel - what a threesome. The best there is

  • Don't forget Jerry Reed, Django, Michael Hedges, and a guy you likely never heard, Stanley Jordan. Try to find Mr Jordan's version of "Elanor Rigby".

Btw, I'll be seeing Mr Emmanuel for the 2nd time this year on July 7 in B'ham, Alabama. Can't wait!!!

  • Fair comment - different styles, maybe, but all good. I've a pretty nice DVD of Chet and Jerry; drop me a private line for details.

  • I'd love to see that...not sure how we could hook up here w/o revealing too much personal info.

  • Such a gifted and inspiring player. Thank you for posting this.

  • If you can make an acoustic guitar sound like a harp without effects such as this guy does,...you have nothing left to learn.

  • its a pinch harmonic he's using...and there's always something new to learn with music.

  • this is not pinch harmonics. I have watched the videos, seen him perform this live, and watched his comments (on other sites) on how he does this. Do some more homework hendrixexp12.

  • I think you already know the technique but they are artificial harmonics. They work the same as the guitar's natural harmonics in the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 19th, 24th frets except your fingers act as the capo. From there your right hand fingers, usually the middle holds the desired fret and thumb gently strokes the string 5, 7, 12 ect. frets away from the fret the left hand holds.

  • Yeah I meant artifical harmonic, I always get those names confused my bad...and I have done my homework so let's just end it at that can we?

  • In my opinion, The electric guitar in diferent tunings has no tonal or atonal limits. The artificial harmonics do soundlike a harp but with chorus in electric, it can sound like an electric piano.

  • what can you say? awesome

  • Just awesome! I hope Tommy plays around the midwest U.S. sometime soon.

  • What a great performance of a beautiful song....Thanx

  • just wondering... where was this recorded? I'm sure it's in Italy (the guy at the beginning saying "mamma mia" and the one at the end saying "grande!"), but where?

  • april 2006: 28,29,30 at Soave Guitar Festival, near Verona.

  • woooow this is awesome

  • I bet that zorro dude Esteban cannot play the tuigar THIS good. Esteban would get frustrated if he tried this style, and turn the song into a cockroach smashing dance tune.

  • Hahahahahahahaha, agreed.

  • duz any1 no wat his guitar brand is?

  • Maton - they are an australian made guitar.

  • this man is da best. i wish i could play like him. just amazing!

  • Tanks Bob for sending this to me...i loved it. Muaaah!!

  • He makes me smile. Better medicine than that hard-ass rap crap.

  • awesome

  • A master ,storytelling Magician

  • Fantastic playing, harmonics and audience anticipation of the middle eight- a point of interest , the actual title of this great song by Harold Arlen is ,' Over the rainbow '.

  • holy smoke - this man has sold his soul to ten different devils!!

  • LoL

    I agree!!

    hahaha

  • Mamma Mia! This is purely amazing.

  • I feel lucky to see such musical insight.

  • simply amazing

  • this is beautiful =D

  • Whoa, totally unexpected! THAT MADE ME CRY! Like, with actual teardrops n' stuff. Kinda embarrasing now that I think about it. =\

  • ahhhhh no pasa nada con ese broster

  • Anyone have a tab for the main part of this song? (i.e. not necessarily the harmonics part but the rest!)

  • Real creative genius, you don't get to see this too often. I'm speechless...

  • wow amazing peformance of Somwhere Over the Rainbow by Tommy Emmanuel. Beautiful, breathtaking, and entertaining. I love it it when it points his finger for the individual note to ring.

  • no existen palabras para describir la habilidad de tommy. realmente genial

  • Thank you

  • First time a guitar player played with such beauty that it made this 71 year old cry.

  • just like this 32 year old

  • dont know why you have never herd of him, but now you know who the best guitar player in the world is, go tell all your freinds haha

  • i love his harmonic tapping technique. how come i've never heard of this guy before? brilliant player!

  • Now if someone would only murder the idiot who's singing in the audience. I've been to more than one concert where some fool thinks they have the right to destroy the experience for everyone else this way.

  • i no

  • amazing..

  • Wow...beautiful

  • Please keep the great vids coming!

  • classic example of tommys genuis
