I am so proud to be a African American. To know of the great contributions of my brothers and sisters. I am working on a poetry presentation and I picked Langston Hughes because a sister lady of color said she did not like his works. I chose him to show my classmates what my people have done, the greatness in us all.
I'm a Southern girl. I'm from a rural NC town where I was always the only little black girl in my class. I needed this poem when I was younger. I am now 28 years old and a high school English teacher and I wonder why I had not read this poem or even properly been introduced to Langston Hughes until I entered college. This saddens me because I'm sure there is another little black girl and boy somewhere, who just like me, needs this poem. I can't watch this clip without crying! I love it!
I edited the clip for a class during my teaching preparation program. The problem is that the system does not acknowledge the contributions of peoples from "different backgrounds." We never hear of minorities contributing to the "White America." History is sanitized to fit the norm. We need to change this, that is why I am an educator to try to make a difference in people's lives.
