In a sense, you could see how the term "Coca-Colonization" is embodied in this video. The product itself is used as a sort of propaganda to bridge American and Philippine culture. That attempt of cultural exchange is not wrong, but with the times (1950's) in mind, this was when America was helping the Philippines form their government. They easily had control of the trade policies which would virtually make the Philippines a colony. Even in the present, you could see that effect of colonialism.

I'm a student of popular culture in The Netherlands/Brazil.. just found this video on the presence of Cocacola in the Philippines and I actually have a doubt.. if anyone would like to clear up...
How did this alliance work in the Philippines? Are those really Philippine companies? Or r they a form of capitalist exploitation in order to get cheaper labor? Well anyway.. hopw someone reads this...as for now, best regards from Brazil! ;)
Everybody knows that coca cola is an American company.Coca cola can be located throughout the world not only philippines. If the the products are being exported back to US then you will call that exploitation of cheap labor, but in this case, these products remain only in the Philippines.
well ever since the Americans occupied the Philippines bringing their western culture and sweet, addictive and refreshing Coca-Cola, it became a demand here. Now the american Company Coca-cola established an asian headquarters here for the Asian market.
Yeah, it's also cheaper here to manufacture stuff cause everything here is cheap.
those times were very promising and any country in development could aspire a future. But Coca cola was looking after the quality of the sugar cane to make the beverage, the sand to make the bootle, but forgot gthe TUBIG (water), where they got the water????
i am still very proud of my filipino heritage...of course who wouldn't miss the good ol' days? you did a good job of posting this unimodem! keep up the good work!
This video relived a 'promise' for a good life in the Philippines. We had lots of modernization and a bit of progress(?) but I wish our country has been moving forward from that day on.

this is what coke and all major corps were hoping for back then and still do...in fact, i think you can find a coke in every country. globalization at its fullest. one must weigh the costs vs the benefits...how much does the average person benefit (job) versus the ceo's, shareholders.
Da bastards! Luk coca-cola has overtaken our fukin country and luk wat it has dun- its a mixture of fukin chemicals in a bottle! And obviusly our ppl der arent educated about its effects on the human body so dey go off drinkin it lyk its water! Dis video is a total brainwasher!!!
don't assume just because your at uni your not dumb. its easy to get into uni in the UK and as a UK born Filipino who's been to university i should know this. that's all I'm saying.
Oo nga eh... kaya tuloy nakakatamad nang bumoto... yung mga binoboto kong sa tingin ko ay matino, sila pa ang tahasan at harapang nadadaya ng mga buwayang pulitiko... hay naku! grabe na to...
There's actually a mystery behind corrupt politics in the Philippines that 98% of our economists don't realize. But I know that mystery. Ask me and I might tell you. :)
I worked in this great company for 7 years, it helps alot in building my family, not only the had given me passport to me to migrate in the US... Godbless coke!!!right now, the company employed 5000 regular employees, 2000 casual employees and 25000 partners employees, taxpayer yun for our country.. go go coke, for your info, the coca-cola company bought the cosmos company, kaya allied na sila ngaun....
It's a great video on philippine history in the 50's. Coca-cola has its share of progress when our country was considered the promising little giant in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Filipino quality known as "Samahang Pinoy" was well portrait. Ramdam mo ang pagtutulungan, dedikasyon at pakikisama sa kaunlaran. Where have all these practices gone? Why is it so different from today's generation and age?
Americans introduced their economic system in the Phils. By 1946 we were on our own. By early 60's all of a sudden corruption emerged within the gov. Filipino politician became greedy. Thats when our economy fell. many moved to manila (specially visayans) to look for job but ended up jobless living in slums. 60's-90's most of our resources has been exhausted, no jobs, so many went abroad to look for better living.
Jeez, I had no idea Coca-Cola was my old trusty wholesome friend, who just naturaly belongs in my family! Good thing all Filipinos now drink multiple bottles a day for its wholesome effect on the teeth and blood sugar. Thanks for caring Coke!!!
This was the decade when RP's economy was the envy of South East Asia. Thais, Malaysians and other people from South East Asia were going to UP to study. It was the decade when the English language was the primary mode of instructions in RP public schools from elementary grade up to college. In 1970 the bilingual education was introduced. From there on Filipinos English language skills plunge as well as the economy.
"marcos was very smart he could raise the philippines to be a fine country but i think his wife manipulated him ... so dont blame him as the cause of our downfall ... he is merely a victim just like us"
i totally agree with this... it was imelda marcuz.. she was the one one! she's insane!
correction please marcos was very clever and very intellegent to be manipulated. actually, it was him who groomed imelda to be his secret weapon so to speak! i know coz i was still in the university when the ma rtial law was declaired! the hard times for thousands of activists where my friends were jailed just because they were in the picture during student demonstration and some of them i don't know their whereabouts!!
im filipino and im proud of the philippines. in case you didnt know, the philippines was the original 'pearl of the orient'. be proud of your country, man, and dont be a crab!
Those were the days when the united states still wanted us to be their 52nd state, or atleast a commonwealth nation. Listen carefully to that american narrator...
What happened is the Filipino people really wanted to cast away the United States as a Colonial power, that set the country back decades, the Philippines just wasnt ready..
really? well review your history coz it's actually America's congress that nixed annexation... Filipinos never really had the power on the issue... It's still the US who made the decision.
During early 1950s and in late 1970s the Philippine was the industrialized nation in whole Eastern Asia. It was like One piso against $.50. It was like the country that dont have poverty. Perhaps the president was pretty darn good running the Philippines. It was like theres no corruption inside and out of the Philippine government. The Impact was so great that the Philippine is the first nation who flew an airline passenger. Yup, we are the first nation!
marcos was very smart he could raise the philippines to be a fine country but i think his wife manipulated him ... so dont blame him as the cause of our downfall ... he is merely a victim just like us
Bullshit if he wasnt stupid enought to think of it. The country wont have NPA, MILF, etc... some bullshit groups that want the government to turn over at them. Bullshit! Look at now, many bullshit people were recruited and was manipulated by their agenda as a communists, fascists, maoist, and some stupid ideologies! Bullshit, Im more hoping that investors might come back to PI to do businesses.
Today we're catching up, old shit is the past, and all we need these days are unity, peace, patriotism, effective governance and laws, and new relocation sites with reliable low-cost homes for all the squatters and homeless alike.
what happened to the philippines? looks very progressive that time. second to the japan in all of asia in terms of economy but now a very poor country. filipino wake up! you have what it takes to be a first world country. dont waste it.
it looked like our country was developing at about the same pace as other other well off countries back then. what happened? that we are now concidered a third world country? where did our people go wrong? was it because of marcos? then how is it his family can still hold office in the government?
The Philippines then was the most developed country in Asia second to Japan even after the WW2. But let us not blame Marcos. He was only a victim of America.
The downfall of his regime was planned by the US because Marcos was turning against America back then. US used Marcos soldier's greed and the rich' desires to control our country.
And one more thing, Marcos, with his knowledge on the art of war, wouldn't kill Ninoy who is believed by many to be his #1 enemy. Who do you think killed Ninoy?
the guy who declared martial law to keep himself in power, the same guy who had people who spoke up against him killed(not only ninoy), the same guy who's own generals told him "NO!" they will not kill the innocent Filipinos who rose up against him (as seen on a lice broadcast, the very same whose excesses, corruption, and greed were were made public as the true "people's power" came crashing down on him...
Globilisation? More specifically exploitation of the kind and courteous Filipino people.
Did you know, Coca-Cola created a new drink to make money during the war from our sworn enemy, the Germans in the Second World War, and that drink was Fanta. So while millions died, Coca-Cola saw WW2 instead as an opportunity to give a new 'refreshing drink' to the Nazis.
Coca-Cola is not a 'friendly' drink, it's a company which doesn't give a .... about anything but profit.
This is the "sweet taste" of being an American subject.

There's actually a mystery behind corrupt politics in the Philippines that 98% of our economists don't realize. But I know that mystery. Ask me and I might tell you. :)

This is a cool video but to be honest, this was one of hundreds of videos put out by the government during their rebuilding after the war.

Does anyone long for vintage Philippines? I do.
Aihihihi!!!

From there on Filipinos English language skills plunge as well as the economy.

i totally agree with this... it was imelda marcuz.. she was the one one! she's insane!

correction please marcos was very clever and very intellegent to be manipulated. actually, it was him who groomed imelda to be his secret weapon so to speak! i know coz i was still in the university when the ma rtial law was declaired! the hard times for thousands of activists where my friends were jailed just because they were in the picture during student demonstration and some of them i don't know their whereabouts!!

What happened is the Filipino people really wanted to cast away the United States as a Colonial power, that set the country back decades, the Philippines just wasnt ready..
socalidav1ds 5 years ago
really? well review your history coz it's actually America's congress that nixed annexation...

Bullshit, Im more hoping that investors might come back to PI to do businesses.
gearzone2611 5 years ago
I totally agree.
It was imelda who screwed up things.
Today we're catching up, old shit is the past, and all we need these days are unity, peace, patriotism, effective governance and laws, and new relocation sites with reliable low-cost homes for all the squatters and homeless alike.

it looked like our country was developing at about the same pace as other other well off countries back then. what happened? that we are now concidered a third world country? where did our people go wrong? was it because of marcos? then how is it his family can still hold office in the government?
Moniker179 5 years ago
we were one of the first world countries during the early years of marcos' reign, but greed took over the man and now the country is paying for it.
disneywillow 4 years ago 3
The Philippines then was the most developed country in Asia second to Japan even after the WW2. But let us not blame Marcos. He was only a victim of America.
The downfall of his regime was planned by the US because Marcos was turning against America back then. US used Marcos soldier's greed and the rich' desires to control our country.
And one more thing, Marcos, with his knowledge on the art of war, wouldn't kill Ninoy who is believed by many to be his #1 enemy. Who do you think killed Ninoy?
casilen 3 years ago 3
hmpp....pero nay punto ka casilen,..dahul hindi naman tayo humahawak ng utak at desisyon ni marcos noon,....pero si imelda naman,...
neutralppol 3 years ago
the guy who declared martial law to keep himself in power, the same guy who had people who spoke up against him killed(not only ninoy), the same guy who's own generals told him "NO!" they will not kill the innocent Filipinos who rose up against him (as seen on a lice broadcast, the very same whose excesses, corruption, and greed were were made public as the true "people's power" came crashing down on him...

1829free 5 years ago
All major companies looks at profit - and you probably have the same mentality.
