I gotta say this. First, Spam is not any unwanted message. I may not want to receive messages from anyone because I'm upset and hating the whole world, this doesn't make the messages I may receive Spam. But most importantly, what the hell is the problem with receiving ONE message with links from someone that YOU followed to start with? I even think that if you follow someone, there's no way that person's communications can be considered unwanted. I think people are being petty about this.
You are absolutely right...why is everyone crying about this when they mostly follow ppl just for the purpose of having them follow them BACK so they can overload THEM with links!

This video aptly highlights the issue - Auto-DMing is RUDE and says "You're not important to me". It's the social networking equivalent of saying "Your call is important to me. Please hold...or press #1."
