But that's just my opinion. Either way, I don't think Gavin should have the spotlight on him, cause all he does is wank.

But if that's disappointing to you, I don't think you should blame it on the new drummer. I mean, Gavin's style I'm sure had something to do with their sound getting a bit crunchier... but Wilson is the captain of that ship, no? Besides, you gotta expect evolution and growth (call it change if u like) after a while, especially when you're talking about musicians of this caliber.

When he bashes out those fills, to me they're almost always musical, serving the songs and providing backbone and balls, not just keeping time - it's a musical instrument to him, and he plays it that way. A band as great as PT deserves to have an involved and exciting drummer IMO.

Search "David Letteman Gavin Harrison" .... and tell me that was wanking. =)

Yeah, man he's a good drummer, that's obvious. But a lot of what he does sounds unnecessary. And you're right about his making it an instrument, but it's no more impressive to me than is Terri Bozzio.

Bozzio is amazing as well, agree with you there... some of my favorite work of his is the stuff he did with Tony Levin and Steve Stevens... particularly "Situation Dangerous", the second album they did. Check it out if you haven't yet.

That drum fill in FOABP is everything. Anything that happens around that is pointless without it.

It's one of the most musical drum fills I've ever heard.

The part before it is building in suspense and dynamics.

Then it all drops off to the drum fill, leaving more suspense to what will happen. And, then it kicks into the most agressive part of the song.

It adds to the song!

Yes, Gavin's drumming does tend to dominate the songs AT TIMES.

Sometimes I prefer the earlier Chris Maitland days of PT, where the more sparse-yet-tasteful drumming allowed some of the simpler songs to breathe more. However, that is just my opinion, and I'm far from denying that Gavin Harrison is an incredible musician. Sometimes I just wish he would lighten up a bit...
