What a genius Debussy was. His works are very difficult to play well on the piano, with the page almost solid black with notes, yet the music sounds so light and simple -- hence its brilliance. And Gieseking always made it look effortless, as though he was enjoying himself. Thanks for positng this!
@quatloosthx1138 I aggree with you Debussy's music is impalpable and iridiscent but as Marta Argerich says in an interesting interwiew ( on youtube ) the piano and his keyboard are a very strange though things that when played magically becomes tender and soft : try it ... Thanks you for your comment .
I am writing to you since I am looking for a cover photo of a deleted CD of Walter Gieseking, in which Gieseking is sitting in a stool by his piano wearing his typical hat. In this cover photo, he has his legs crossed and he is smiling. The cover photo shows him in full body.
I would be grateful if you could tell me about the label and catalogue number of the deleted CD.
I believe Giesking had the best touch and feel for the French impressionists. I also admire his rendition of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. In America he has been forgotten by many.
Ho preso lezioni private, poi ho continuato come autodidatta dai 15 anni in su.
When I was a child and teenager I worked (7 years) with a Gieseking's student. I really can say you that the quality of sound of this people is just wonderful...I remember when my teacher played. His sound (he got it from Gieseking) was amazing. Soooo beatiful! I am really proud to have and teach to my own students this kind of school. The school of sound and music, not only technique.
Actually, as a pianist, I think the tone is the most important thing. There is few pianists who have a beatiful tone and colour... Nowadays, Pletnev and Kissin maybe...
It makes me really happy to know that anyone in my family could have such a positive impact on the people that hear their music. It really is a blessing to hear that you enjoy Walters music so much. :)
@bagieseking Here's more to make you happy. His Emporor concerto recording has enthralled me for years. It is a constant pleasure because his playing has such a singing tone it brings the music to life, rather than just a noise it becomes thought patters in your head. Such musicality spans the generations.
I think the music was recorded on a piano roll. So the tempo of the playing depends on how fast you roll the roll (play) it, which is often a bit faster than when it was recorded.
modern pianists have sometimes only a battle-trained technique : when Gieseking who was a genious was studying piano Debussy -who died in 1918 -was alive !Gieseking breathed deeply the impressionistic wind...
@otto6891 They are so much more angular, spastic, and take great lengths to show us their artistic license. So, I think a lot of today's pianist can take a lesson in refrain and expressivity from the VSOP (very superior older pianists).
Tonal nuance and pedaling here gorgeous. Pianism could be considered a bit more apparent than a later recording, with its less effortful sway. Don't want to be guilty of belaboring or self-justification (I'd erase previous remarks if knew how). TY 'allegroconmoto' for posting this beautiful recording. After growing up with an Angel LP (had one of those 'sticks' on the end for pulling out), I took to heart everything the great pianist had to say at that point in time. Execution more relaxed.
Thank you for your kind and precious remarks.I grow up wit h 78rpm and valve sound in my ears ! I'll never forget the marvellous sound of my old piano teacher's radio-gramophone playing la mer conducted by Toscanini and Landowska
Bravo Gieseking who was incredibly a self taught pianist !!
the tempo is very good. It fits with the player.. the emotion doesnt go away there.. just listen. My point is that there isnt only 1 way to play this piece. Only thing you can expect to be in this piece is the emotion. You can here many players on youtube who just don't seem to listen to what they are playing.
In fact Debussy and Ravel have been recognised as classiks between 1920 /1940 by means of Gieseking's interpretations. He was their apostle. Clearness, sonority'care and emotionality are between his qualities.
I love this tempo and Geisekings general overall approach to Debussy, only very occasionally he misinterprets. If played at a slower tempo the tune risks being sentimentalized which is unfortunately the norm nowadays (as judging by the comments).
This is Gieseking's first recording of the Arabesques, for Homocord (note the H-series matrix number.) He signed the wax master, so any 78s made from that master are easily identifiable. My copy is an American Decca, not a bad pressing as those go but certainly not as good as the posted Odeon. I believe these same performances were issued on Columbia, but he did later recordings for Columbia as well.
Well if that's the case, what can I say (other than apologize). Gieseking's level of performance of course did vary. I noticed it did have "approximations" of his better recording, and felt most any fairly accomplished pianist with sensitive touch could've recorded this. In other words, to me, it sounded like a poor imitation of Gieseking! Then he was, undoubtedly (at least in my estimation) "off" when recording here.
Ciao!

I recently read a book by Giesking on piano technique. He really does put sound before anything else - and unique sound control he has.
