@sadsmily There's interesting arguments in both directions - that it improves social cohesion (justice based on merit) or causes social conflict to intensify. I think you can see that I subscribe to the second view, but I've read Durkheim et al. too!
@Ahooper11 Thanks Ahooper....the problem I'm discussing is: is it in everybody's best interest to have unequal rewards. E.g., think of the idea that you get rewarded for doing a better job, and punished with less pay for doing a worse job. These people - the functionalists - argue that that's right. It motivates everyone. But I'm trying to question what they're saying.
