  • I feel that my left hook to the head lands best when my hand is half-way between palm-in and palm-down.

  • You know, Freddie's Parkinson's disease isn't nearly as bad as Ali's is? Are there different levels of Parkinson's? Or is it that Ali has been in more wars than Roach has? Interesting

  • @dss103 Well, Ali's started out like Freddie's but Parkinsons disease may gradually worsen as time moves on. Alot of people refuse to take the Parkinsons prescribed medicine because it makes them sluggish and cloudy. But Ali's severity I think is simply from luck and age. Freddie may worsen or stay the same, Parkinsons is a strange disease like that.

  • Gringofreestyler. Having your palm facing inward toward your body is a punch specifically for MMA and things associated with MMA such as Muay Thai or Kickboxing. Like Roach says..boxing is for closer distance fighting allowing you to face your palm down. That is why in boxing you do that where as in MMA you are further away from your opponent making your left or right hooks more powerful at greater distances when your palm faces your body. Hope that helps. Freddie Roach is the man

  • @lboogie1338 You know ive been training mma for 2 years now and I never thought about this. Youve enlightened me as to why we do it differently. I never quite looked at it in that way lol

  • @lboogie1338 no, the reason MMA, which generally uses Muay Thai for standup striking, positions the thumb up (palm facing body) for hooks is for clinching....especially if you miss with a hook, your hand is already in position to clinch.

  • pretty fast for a big guy

  • 1:16 ??? 'O.o

  • I've never seen a hook thrown palm down. I know that it's taught this way but it just doesn't feel natural in the flow of exchanging.

  • @ddariusj88 I was actually a little surprised by this as well. I guess there are more than one ways of teaching for throwing a hook. I have always heard that a hook is thrown with palm facing inwards towards your body. It may be that he is teaching a punch to go over the guard to the opponents head. Palm down would give it a better angle. In the end, if Freddie Roach is saying it, I can't really say it's wrong. He has to have a good point to it.

  • that guy is freakishly strong!

  • @BrigadaHAHAHA look at the size of his arms

  • I could watch freddie all day. He is an amazing coach.

  • look at all the supplements in the back haha buncha cheaters fuck pacroid

  • @poooooo331 All boxers take supplements, what are you talking about? Even I take supplements for added protein dumbass nigga

  • @XtremeOwner Dont mind that guy. I train in boxing and muay thai so i take supplements to heal my shins and hands after they get really messed up. This guy probably doesnt know anything just another groupie

  • Left jab, right upper cut, left hook, hardest straight right as you can.... try it out haha

  • that 1 2 loooks.....scary :(

  • I love rouch he's a great guy.

  • 1:16 very fast combo :P

  • that guy vs kimbo slice

  • Second hook (first at full speed) has a frame or two missing from the film - nobody is that fast. All the other ones, though, are legit. And kinda scary.

  • @13jayfos yup you're right

  • Who is that Boxer? His left hook has mad power!

  • @ajetheman

I think it's Justin Fortune, does expertvillege vidoes.

  • was so not expecting a fast 1, 2 for a big guy like that and power.. very impressive

  • That dude got mad power on that left hook I want to hit it like that that's ko power right there

  • He's got good hands.

  • killer left hook

  • The left hooks is the reason why Pacman knockdown Marquez 4 times.

  • @quickzilver333 paquiao is a southpaw, he leads with the right hook and STRAIGHT Left. all four downs were all caused by straight lefts. LOLZ

  • @airbbll08 he leads with the jab you chump

  • @MrJoelouisbarrow ever boxer leads with his jab " chump," please don't reply to me when u dont know what the hell i was talking bout.

  • @airbbll08 so u dont know what a hook is ?

  • @airbbll08 jab is one of many leads. it's not the only lead. as you get more comfortable and learn the game better, you realize right hands leads, uppercut leads, left hook leads are just as effective. everything has a time and place. right hand lead, left uppercut overhand right is a beautiful, effective combo without a jab.

  • @timmyz55 you're preaching to the choir.

  • @airbbll08 so... you are acknowledging that not every boxer leads with the jab?

  • @timmyz55 in a 12 round fight, name one boxer that doesn't lead with his jab more than any other punch. even the usual suspects, mayweather, jones jr, ali has never done it. they time their leaping left hooks straight right. it's a cardinal sin in boxing to not set things up with the jab. unless you're trying to counter, which boxer doesn't set things up with his jab? i dont know what you're talking about when you say " not every boxer leads with the jab."

  • @airbbll08 lol i never said that the jab is not the most commonly used lead. you said "every boxer leads with his jab." so i figured you meant in the context, every single time, a boxer must lead with his jab... which is totally not true. sure, the jab sets up a lot of things, but you can still lead with another punch.

  • @timmyz55 fair enough.

  • LOLZ land with the elbow! HAHA GOLD!

  • I almost broke my wrist throwing the hook like he said to it until my coach told me throw it with my palm facing me.

  • @chrislipimp Throw it with the palm facing yourself if the guys close to you and facing the floor if he is a distence away from you

  • @wwechamp7 That makes sense. I've been taught to use booth (palm down and palm facing) but not really when.

  • @daniel213141 yeah boxing guys always tell you to throw it palm facing down usualy and mostly consider having it palm facing yourself an error but i am an MMA guy so i learn abit differently.

  • @wwechamp7 yeah true i used to box now im training muay thai and little grappling but i tend to have my palm down for short hooks but facing me for longer range hooks

  • @Samtkjones Well thats strange because your palm should be facing you for shorter range and facing your opponant on longer ranges (rare that you should try)... It so you dont crush you pinkie knuckle

  • @scatcatsid when you said this it sounds quite possibly so i looked at some fights and seen most long range hooks thrown palm toward them selves. you sure thats right? i find the shorter hooks is easier to put more power and a slight downward angle when thrown palm down

  • I almost broke my throwing the hook like said to throw it

  • Uppercut is thrown with palm in. Hook is basically the same punch at a different angle.

  • that guy hits palm facing him.

  • I use right hook 'cause I'm a southpaw...

  • roach said: throw left hook with palm facing down. I was taught with palm facing me.

  • @zagabel palm facing down is for power, palm facing you is less powerful but theres a higher chance u could injure ur thumb or wrist hooking with palm facing down

  • @zagabel Both ways work. Don't really worry about the distinction. I've heard all kinds of explanations for each--vertical fist has more power, horizontal fist has better flexibility of range, vertical fist is less likely to hurt your wrist and hand, horizontal fist is easier to connect. The only explanation that really seems to make a difference to me is that, when punching in MMA gloves, throw the hook like Freddie teaches--the other kind have a tendency to connect w/ the fingers.

  • @ruebuscm The left hook has always perplexed me in this way. I see the physics behind the palm down as it forces you to bring up your elbow up and therefore have the weight of the entire arm and shoulder behind the punch, but with the palm facing in, I feel it generates more power by distributing the torque better and allows for more snap.

  • @ballsaq Not only that, but w/ palm down you are leading w/ your pinky knuckle (which is the most prone to being injured). Palm in allows you to lead with you index and middle finger knuckles which is where you want to focus the power of the strike anyway. Freddie obviously knows more than me, so there must be a reason, I just don't know it.

  • @marrerogecko I learned it palm in and I think its the best. Palm down is weird.

  • @guigui1992 not if you keep your elbow up

  • @marrerogecko

I learned it both ways and I feel like my rotator cuff is safer with a palm in position. I watched a Freddie Roach highlight reel of his fights in the 80's and he seems to use both positions depending on his body position. If he's shifting his head off to the side and ducking while throwing it he seems to go palm down but if he's still up right it appears palm in. I've seen this happen to most fighters who support a palm down position. Just what I've observed anyway.

  • @zagabel The advantage of palm towards you is good for the street. You either hit clean or miss clean. But with the palm turned down you may occasionally strike only with the smallest knuckle - which breaks easily!

  • i wouldnt wana take a hook from that guy

  • @fistking Justin Fortune, look it up, that's the guy roach was coaching, then compare your achievements to him before saying he doesn't know real boxing, dumbass

  • @kid515 Your a moron you don't even understand what i said. Your too stupid to talk to anymore, done.

  • @fistking you said "trust me", haha is that a joke? compare your achievements to roach then comeback haha and prove to people that they can trust what you are saying. you're just a boxer wannabe who just watches tutorials in youtube so you don't have the right to judge roach, loser. Fight in the ring with roach's boxers or even roach who has a disease, if you can beat them, that's the time you can judge him. you are nothing, just an internet troll. done. :)

  • @kid515 yeah yeah whatever who care's, do you believe in the easter bunny too kid, that is really "done" no more replys from the champ and i 100% will not look at any of yours, haha i win ya losers.. really?? how come i always win?? anyways smoke a mean one losers haha

  • @fistking haha no one cares! :) i win!! hahah loser hahaha

  • @fistking those are called haymakers, jack ass

  • @fistking

The reason Mr Roach is teaching a palm down hook is because; #1 It helps beginner to bring their elbow up. #2 Helps beginners to NOT punch with the inside of the glove. #3 Helps to remove the biceps from the punch (Using biceps to help with the power of a hook is a common 'problem' with beginners and messes with the timing when the arm gets tired)

  • @fistking

Freddy Roach is one of the best trainers/coaches in boxing (but then again if you didn't know this first part of this post, you are not going to know that either)

Some people are so behind in the race, they think they are winning.

look at this /watch?v=qsLuwM16X2Y on 0 min 41 sec

an this /watch?v=pfXLtsWm5xE on 4 min 30 sec

    have you still any questions?

  • Good demo thanks Freddie

  • That guy isnt turning his hand on the hooks.

  • @Freezah2540 and so what about it

  • @FIGHTFANNERD3 Hes not listening to what his coach just told him. no shit? lol

  • guy throw the hook out from elbow.

  • this guy is also telegraphing. he lifted and winded back his right hand, which isn't how to throw a GREAT right hand. you can see the tension in his shoulder about 5 seconds before he throws the punch. which is likely why the sped up that hook in there lol, you don't want to telegraph like that. lol

  • You shouldn't be hitting your pinky knuckle unless you're looping the shot rather than looking it out and turning into it. emphasis on hitting the top of knuckles... you don't always have to be mechanical... the greats never really are...

  • i never knew that you threw a hook with plam facing floor i thought that was bad cause you hit with pinky knuckle first and could break your hand easier? can anyone explain this to me?

  • Coach Freddie is an extra ordinary man

  • i normally hook with my palms facing towards me because i find that more comfortable...is that incorrect?

  • @boxingfan786 No, you are not incorrect. I was taught by a trainer in my gym. This VERY old trainer. Been around for years and has taught boxing for years. He teaches everything by the book. I use to throw my hook like freddie, but the old man wanted it done with the palm facing towards me. That's how i do it now lol.

  • @fbi7553 so you do a leading hook? Both are good in your arsenal.

  • hes a goon

  • FREDDIE: If a good hook misses the elbow lands! Im not saying be a dirty fighter ow wait i just said to be a dirty fighter

  • I'll try to "follow through" with my elbow next time I'm sparring and throwing a hook.

  • if freedy roach is so good why werent e world champion :S

  • @khanjames61 He was never '' that good'' he was good but not the best, but excelled as a trainer he understands boxing and has the ability to teach which most Ex fighters dont.

  • @khanjames61 ... Some people are Better Coaches instead. Look @ Roger Mayweather.

  • I Love Freddie!!

  • Awesome hook

  • been looking for these! thanks for uploading :)

  • wow Frazier and G. Foremen both threw flat palm hook and hook counted for 60% OF KO...

  • yeah, roach has deadly left hook

there used to be alot more boxing vids with roach on youtube

  • the left hook is roach's favorite punch

  • very helpful video thank you

  • amn dat foo has hands for a big guy

  • wtf happened to all of roach's other videos?

  • @codeman95291 youtube started taking them down cause of copy shit >:(

  • @codeman95291 banned cuz pacmans his second fighter on steroids

  • @mcrolla102 Proove it.

  • @JaguarPawww how can somebody move up weight that quick really its unreal even if he was a bodybuilder he wouldnt weigh out that quick without the aid of steroids, plus it wouldn't be the first time one of freddie roach's fighters has taken steroids

  • @mcrolla102 what about the kid with 8 limbs ? hmm he couldn't of done that without biological help or steroids eh.. no natural phenomenon

  • @JaguarPawww this isn't nothing needed for healing, its boxing, its a sport which should be made fair and not used for cheating by steroids he a pacroid dirty cheating bastard end of

  • @mcrolla102 end of... oh yes because you prooved your point, backed it up with evidence, yesssssss you did.. not.

  • @mcrolla102 well what about mayweather?? he can be taking steroids too he gained more weigt than pacquiao.. Plus he takes alot of breaks.. he can be juicing all those time and not be detected when he does test for a fight.. and just to let you know, the gains you make during the juicing period stays even when you stop the supplements. mayweather is an obvious cheating bastard, .....manny.... MIGHT be a sneaky bastard lol

  • @darthclone7 *might be sneaky cheating bastard*.. although his last fight with marquez makes him look very human. he still had the speed and great footwork like he always had.. but he did bad because marquez knew his pattern and style very well. no steroids, just great speed but adequate power, just someone with good fast twitch muscles

  • @darthclone7 because mayweather always takes drugs test to proove hes not juicing, he doesnt move up weight fast in the last 20 years hes gone up 6 weight classes, manny has done that with the space of a few years, talk sence

  • @mcrolla102 ic.. but iunno i stil dontt think his taking steroids i mean marquez looked way bigger than pac during fight night

  • @darthclone7 not all steroids make u bigger but yeah he probly isint on them

  • @darthclone7 50cent supplies Mayweather with his man juice.

  • That's werid how he throws his left hook I was taught to throw it like mike Tyson with ur pome facing u

  • @1234NAna12 I read that with the longer/wider hooks the palp should face you. With the close range/infighting hook the palm should face down. I makes sense, specially if you practice just the hand/elbow movement a bit with no body. The short range hook kinda snaps down, while the longer ranges make you snap towards your chest. It would make sense to keep the palm of the hand at the direction in which the snapping motion is in to avoid injury and add more power through better alignment. My 2c :)

  • @1234NAna12 the wider the left hook the more palm facing you the shorter the hook less palm

  • @boxingnut1986 Agreed. It's really preference, but tactically, throwing the hook over the top of your opponents jab/cross is much more accurate with the palm down letting you slip over the shoulder. If the target is covering with both hands, you can slip the hook behind his guard (near the ear) with the palm facing. Also palm inward against an orthodox fighting using the shell so you can adjust the punch (from half/half to hook) if he changes levels (ducks right when he hides his chin). So Both

  • 0:10 "So when [Justin] hits somebody, he gets your attention. 1 - 2!"

when i saw him throw that punch im like... "HOLY SHIT!"

  • roach is awesome

  • the video is cut to make the hook look faster : 1:16

  • @shuko007 Looks more like an error in the video, too obvious to be a attempt at a fake hook

  • @shuko007 You are right. That's funny.

  • wow didn't realize that lol

  • @shuko007 seriously, it looks so fast that i almost believe you.

  • @shuko007 lol, it was one little glitch. that is all.

  • @shuko007 oh yeah!

  • @shuko007 doubt its been cut on purpose, even a baby would notice it.

  • @shuko007 They just took out the right hand, but it does look faster. It actually was that fast though. I don't think they sped it up any; just took out the right hand.

  • yeah hatton is KO by left hook

  • @magicsummon and what a fuckingleft hook it was lol pacman is a beastt!!
