When I reboot with the flash drive in and the rEFIt menu comes up there is only 1 icon to select (the apple icon), there is no windows. Can someone please help me!
Its a little confusing. So doing it this way isn't the same as installing it fresh from a CD correct? Since you don't get to chose disk partition space (how much space for windows)
I'm getting into the refit boot menu, but it does not show the bootcamp icon, and when i try to boot from the usb, it says that there is not partition found to boot onto. can someone help?
how ever i dun think this will work on the most new update of the mac os xlion, since now in boot camp they do not let u to partition ur harddisk without installing the window at the same time...... sigh..
@iTony2101 Hi When you run bootcamp on a Macbook Air it will give the the option to download the drivers for bootcamp when it does you simply copy them to a USB flash drive.
I did exactly as you said in ur vid and once i boot to windows i get a msg that says "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key" i've also tried to boot from a cd (from an external dvd player since my dvd drive laser appears to be dmged) and got the same msg, in cases i also got a msg "missing operating system". I also tried all of this after formatting the mac but nothing changed. I have an iMac version 10.6.8 snow leopard. Do you have any idea what can be causing this?
@TheFrappelicious I've had this message before. To work around it, when you first boot up, as SOON as your screen turns blue and it plays the tone (you have to be quick!) hold down the alt key. If you do it right, a window should show up asking you to choose what drive you want to boot from. If you properly installed rEFIt like he showed in the video, however, you wont need to do this. I would keep rEFIt simply for this reason.
@TheFrappelicious no simple fact is bootcamp only first introduced with Leopard, and every version from there of Mac OS. if you upgrade to leopard you will be able to do this.
guys rEFIt does actually work on lion. it has little to do with the OS X version but more the actual firmware (EFI) of your mac desktop/laptop. and i tried rEFIt does work on lion.
@pkerry12 So the only way to install the bootcamp drivers on windows is to manually install it via the second USB? And BTW when you "burn" the ISO of the windows file to the USB does that make the USB useless except to install windows on computers?
My Bootcamp also says install instead of partition, When i click install it just says: "The installer disc could not be found". Is there a way to get around that? or does anyone know where i can get an older version of boot camp assistant? Thanks!
Specs: Macbook Pro running on Lion; trying to install Win7
@ShreadinTheToast Simply its requried if you want windows to work properly and your Mac OS to work properly side by side, also you need bootcamp to run its installer in windows to install all the windows drivers and apple services so you can run things like icloud etc in windows. Windows user that think its not necessary need to learn that it is.
@nicklassayshi yes you can get it to work on lion. but i would not recommend you to do so. it is pretty difficult. I did it and it took me waayyy!! to long. and for lion you do need at least one disc no matter what. just to create the boot camp partion. then there is a lot of other crap you'll need to do. so just for your time sake I would just go get the disk and follow the lion boot camp instructions. but if your still wanting to go this rout let me know and Ill try to get back to you.
How do you get the windows support software? When i click download windows support software i get a loading bar, and then it tells me unable to download windows support software!
@DeutschKlasseFTW look it up in your search bar. it did the something to me, but it ended up being in some folder. so just search it and see what happens.
Hi wanna ask. When i'm at window setup, my cursor can't click for selection... wonder why? Then i have to use arrow to complete my installation. But after finish, n boot again, i still can't use my cursor.
Excellent guide, i have made my usb key with the MS tool, installed rEFIt, and when i enter bootcamp it recognizes my usb flash key as an windows installation medium (since it offers to install windows 7) but when i click next, and get to choose the sixe of my partition for windows, when i click "next, install or whatever it says" it asks me for my Windows 7 dvd.
I have a question. At about 8 minutes you get to the partitioning of the hard drive. Where yours says "partition" at the bottom mine says "install" Upon completion of the partition, the computer restarts with my windows drive in it. How do i Keep it from installing without me telling it to?
could you please send me an email , got only 1 problem and it's that i got no sound :-s Pls send a PM on pieterverdun@hotmail.com iff you would be so kind
After I formatted the partition, it said it still couldn't install for some weird reason. I'm gonna try again and write down what it says this time. It's never done that when I installed XP.
Good detailed instructions EXCEPT after you download the windows dvd tool you say that first you need an ISO of the windows CD, but don't explain how to do that???
but I have only one problem , I deleted rEFIT but when I get to the standard select screen I get windows on the right and rEFIT on the left "its just the name of the MAC its not MAC HD anymore" so if i can change the name back I'll be happier :)
you dont have to put the drivers onto a usb, once you have put windows onto your mac just put in your mac os cd that came with your computer or if you bought snow leopard of lion its on there, just put the disc in while in windows
@TheJimsterJim Hi Macbook Airs doesn't have dvd drives, using the Mac OS dvd defeats the purpose of using a USB drive to do the entire installation of windows 7 from a flash drive. this is a NO DISC solution.
@pkerry12 JimsterJim has a point, you can just install drivers from an external hard drive but It is impossible to install Windows 7 onto a Mac via an external optical drive (I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support who told me this).
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. But when I boot from the usb drive, it says error that it refuses to boot from the usb drive because of the firmware doesn't support, what's wrong?
Well, I've done everything, but when I'm going to download the windows support software it doesn't work, says that the download could not continue and says that the windows support software is not avaiable.
@dglpsd this problem was encountered by me when i first installed 64 bit windows , then i installed 32 bit win7 installation and everything went smooth!!

@viciouscoy When I reboot, the rEFIt menu comes up, and on it are OSX Lion, Bootcamp and the Windows USB. When I click the windows icon (USB) it says there's no bootable device :/
I follow the steps but it sais that my ISO file is not valid when i try to burn it to my USB i use magicISO to make it and i don't know how to fix this
Hi i want to install windows 7 on my remove hard disk because my macbook doesn't have free space so i buy a remove hard disk so i can install windows 7 on my remove hard disk or no with this step but i don't make boot camp and install windows 7 on hard disk not boot camp ?? please help ..

@HanZehKaJin bootcamp assistant asks you if you want to download the windows bootcamp drives etc and it downloads them to a specified location in this case point to flash drive.
hi. when you get to the part where you format the bootcamp partition to NTFS, can you also delete the osx partition to get a clean windows disk, and just continue normally. or will you not be able to boot the mac if you do that?
@MegaCoreMagnetizer If you only want to run Windows I recommend you get a Windows PC because Boot camp will not allows you to do that, Mac's are not for you.
@pkerry12 You cant, Only the latest MacBook Air has BootCamp 4.0.1 with the ability to make install disk on your USB Flash, I checked Apple support to confirm it and i tried it my self on my iMac the latest version was 4.0 and there's no option that allow me to make install disk via BootCamp.
on my macbook pro gives an error, says disk not bootable. refit detects the windows usb stick bat then says that. ive got a macbook pro 2011 with 1SSD and 1 HDD.
The other day my mac mini started to refuse my windows installation disk, going to try this as soon as I can get to my windows computer. So hoping this will work :D
For all the 2011 MBA (Lion) users, there are some minor differences that you should know about:
1. You can insert the bootable Windows 7 drive and install after partition. No need to reset as it will allow it to install from your USB.
2. You might have to format your drive to NTFS if it doesn't allow you to install Win 7 on your bootcamp partition. Just click on the bootcamp partition and press format.
3. Delete REfit from Search box. I couldn't find StartUpItems in Library.
Is there a problem by just keeping rEFIT? Cause I think it looks sweet when I am starting the Mac and the menu comes up, and it is so stressing to have to push the Alt button.
Thanks for a great tutorial btw, so easy to follow and finish.
When I reboot with the flash drive in and the rEFIt menu comes up there is only 1 icon to select (the apple icon), there is no windows. Can someone please help me!

@MegaCoreMagnetizer If you only want to run Windows I recommend you get a Windows PC because Boot camp will not allows you to do that, Mac's are not for you.

@pkerry12 Too late hehe. I've completley removed OSX and am now running win 7 ultimate 64. works great.

In Boot Camp 4.0.1 for MacBook Air you can create a Windows 7 install disk and boot Windows from it without rEFIt.
BnSuItan 5 months ago
@BnSuItan you can do that with all version of bootcamp the purpose of this is to instal windows with out using old technology like dvd's
pkerry12 5 months ago
@pkerry12 You cant, Only the latest MacBook Air has BootCamp 4.0.1 with the ability to make install disk on your USB Flash, I checked Apple support to confirm it and i tried it my self on my iMac the latest version was 4.0 and there's no option that allow me to make install disk via BootCamp.

can you rightclick in windows on a macbook air 2011 model?
abvmoose87 6 months ago
