I always loved the song, but I was not a fan of Michael Jackson. Though I thought his earlier singing was good to great, later in his career, to me, he lost his natural voice. So I loved the song, but Michael's version was not for me, even though that was one of his better recordings. I honestly couldn't put up with the grunts and so on. They changed the whole type of music.

You don't get it, do you? The point of a cover is not to try to outdo the original. That's like saying you want to paint a better version of a Van Gogh. A cover is just a homage, a way of expressing your admiration for another's art. Jay doesn't need to copy anyone else or try to be better than anyone else. He just has to be himself, and that's what makes his music sincere.
