  • tee hee who saw the guy bale in the background...

  • great drill going to avoriaz in 48 hours i will try this drill just in genral i am a intermediate skier who wants to learn to carve and tidy my turns up and look good have you got any tips?

  • @dolgellau100 good goal! The 3 main lessons of the dvd focus on the main ski fundamentals and the progressions and drills shown are aimed at helping people improve their fundamental skiing skills. Being able to carve a clean turn also on steeper terrain always comes back to ski fundamentals. Greets, K

  • lol at 1:35

  • I find a great drill for encouraging a twist in the hip is the Javalin. I wont explain it as we have google. But its important to emphasise this twist as it brings your stability when your going low. It also gets the pupil used to putting all their preasure on the outside ski (which is an extreme but still very good practice). And its a drill that had different difficulty levels and pupils can work through. I find it great when teaching.

Hope you see these comments as constructiove critisism.

  • I agree. The Javelin turn is a great drill and is also shown in the additional drills section on my DVD. For intermediate skiers i do prefer the drill shown here, as you can also do it at slower speed and in a sliding turn. Thank you for your input.

  • Generally a very good online lesson. Well done!

The only thing is you have way too much pop when you come out of a turn in your demo @1:25. I dont know if its intentional or not but if you are teaching you wouldnt want to do that in your demo.

  • I believe that a demo should clearly show what is going on and I choose to slightly exagerate wanted movements in my demos to make them easier to spot. Apart from 4:25 which shows what happens when you pop too much. ;)

  • Sometimes even instructors find it hard to spot what is going on in someones skiing, so why do we expect our clients to see these things. Often demos imho are way too static and don't show what is actually going on. Like the way superman flies, it looks great, but no one knows how he does it.

  • wow. very good . you are awesome man . no words just amazing job :)

  • Over years I could acquire this technique quite well. I am still scared of steep slopes though! How to fix that?!?!?!?!?

  • On steeper slopes fundamental skiing skills become more important. This lesson is an add. lesson of my DVD and should show how being able to create outside ski pressure and how to initiate a turn are applied in carving. To improve your performance in skiing steeper terrain you would most likely need to spend some more time on these areas. On the DVD you will also find a chapter on skiing the steeps. Not every turn needs to be carved! Being able to slide a turn is just as important!

  • Ok Klaus, very good lesson and job, but if anything happens to me like that at 4.29, I would certainly dead!

  • Great video! I will probably not be carving much, but this should help my form.

  • Merci !!!!

  • wooow, skiing looks very cool, never tried it before lol :(

  • I am watching ski videos and it's snowing on youtube.. cooool

  • THANK YOU!!!!0!!7!!!

  • I bought his DVD. Every penny worth it.

  • This is what I want to learn during my next week in the mountains, propper carving looks so much fun!!!!

  • lmao look at guy in background at 135 haha

  • thanks for this video! can't wait to try the next time i go skiing

  • Pretty good, but when he talks about angling the knees I would discuss the movement as originating in the ankles. That is, roll the ankles to the inside of the turn. You also do not need to push the inside ski forward; the angle of the slope will do that for you. You cannot argue the result though, the guy is very good! A little abrupt "up" gets him a bit out of control in one spot. Good video.

  • @jimidee33 Thank you for your post! You mention some good points. Ankles: I found that people, esp with this drill, find it easier to focus on the knees than on the ankles. Inside Ski Lead: To move the inside foot forward increases the chance that people get the skis on the edge and not just turn their feet. This is only used in this drill, when doing half a turn starting in the fall line!

  • And yes there was an abrupt up that threw me off. :) But i believe that in a ski demonstration movements should rather be exagerated so students can spot what is actually going on. Klaus

  • @MairKlaus Yes, it is a drill and I should have considered that. And it works. I may use it on my students this winter! When you mention exxageration in teaching students you're correct for all but the most advanced. Thanks for the reply. I was not trying to be overly critical.

  • @jimidee33 You were not. This is good stuff. Thank you for posting.

  • Like this video

  • i like this lesson...thanks...

  • best exercise I've tried to date ...one really get the feeling of carving

works even in heavy spring snow

  • Good lesson.

  • MairKlaus,

I can't thank you enough for your expert instruction! I bought your video and a season pass this year and have made huge improvements!! Still trying to get over my fear on the steeps. Looking forward to the SSS member area and your next video(??). SKI UTAH!

  • I wish this guy would post a video of him ripping it around the mountain. I can watch from 4:25-5:35 over and over again. Excellent skier!!

  • I am ski instructor for a 4 years... I teach usually only beginers but sometimes I teach Intermediate too. This video help me to teach them right.... thx

  • very compliments for your video i skiing and i have recording my performance on my channel...look it!!! i'm DANCLIP...thank's

  • God to be able to ski like him. It must feel like you're flying. Total self-expression.

  • Just tried it - this really works, one of best exercise I have tried to date

  • Great lesson. Cant wait to try this out. A few years ago, I tore my acl when my downhill ski caught an edge on an icy slope-speed was also a factor and I lost control really quick. . . super video, i'm sure this will help out.

  • what a spill at 1:36

  • Good one point lesson!! Wanna go to the ski resort right now to practice this skill ASAP. However the temperature is going up now, and unfortunately snow on the slopes is gonna be melting away. Very sad ;-(

  • This guy is an absolute monster on the slopes. Bravo.

  • I purchased the dvd and am very pleased. Skiing the steeps section was very helpful and solved issues I was having with not being fast enough through the turn . The techniques introduced in the dvd can be fully realized when you use proper carving skis with a good stiff boot. I demoed a pair of Volkl TigerSharks and I immediately realized that my K2s were preventing me from improving. Next day I picked up a pair of RaceTigers SLs which I can't wait to try out.

  • Great carving!

  • とても解りやすい!

  • Carving turns in good conditions is easy. However, I live in New England. No matter what I do I CANNOT manage to keep control on ice. My skis just slide out from under me. What am I doing wrong?

  • @Freddy3740 In general sliding a turn in control is the better option on ice. To stay in control on a more slippery surface you need to be in a position that allows you to stay in balance when the skis start to accelerate. If you are slightly off when you get on a icy spot you might loose your balance very quickly. On my DVD you find lots of info and drills that should help you improve your position on your skis during the turn and in between. Greets, Klaus

  • How do you decrease your speed if you start going to fast down a steeper hill? Do you make larger or tighter carves? We have some very narrow runs that are very steep and I'm tired of snowplowing those runs and want to carve them.

  • @Cuzntime To reduce your speed you need to release the edge and slide to burn energy. Being able to slide a turn and to get the skis off the edge is an important skill that should be developed before you try to carve a turn. In narrow passages you can then sideslip or make tighter slidden turns.

  • @MairKlaus I see, kind of like making short hockey stops.. Thanks again!!

  • Very, very nice. Now I love skiing even more

    Ivan. Serbia

  • If you want to learn how to carve, definitely buy this video from from Mair.

  • No you don't! Make sure you learn how to slide and stop safely first! Take a lesson and your instructor will tell you all the important things you need to know to get started with this sport.

  • Thanks for the video.

I will try this tomorrow when I,m going to the ski Resort in Kvitfjell.

  • cool.. very cool

  • It's the best video here...

  • Amazing... You are going so fast !!! Do you have one tip for me? I like to hold my feet at littlebit more together in the turn. If I do I lose my balance.

    Greetz marianne

  • Thanks for your comment! In general the opposite should be the case. If you have your feet further appart you should feel it easier not to loose your balance. Just like when someone tries to push you over, you will have better chances not to loose the balance with your feet hip wide apart than closer together. In skiing you can vary your stance depending on what forces you are dealing with. More ski tips and answers in the new SSS member area coming soon and free for all SSS online customers. K

  • Just one question, do you have your weight on both skis equally? Or on your downhill ski like usual? Thanks, and great video!

  • Thank you! You can carve clean turns on easy blue runs with the weight 50/50. As soon as the forces build up you do need the ability to increase outside ski pressure in order to avoid sliding (or for the slidden turn: make the skis go where you want them to go). You find lessons and drills on how to improve this skill on the rest of the DVD. Have a great winter! Klaus

  • I can do that...no, I cant - but I whish. I'm off to Engelberg in February and I will try your stuff there. The way you execute those turns is so pro. Nice vid.

  • Great skiing!!!

  • Rolf 1:35

  • Am trying hard to get my inner Klaus happening - I have the vid and it is fantastic. Thanks Klaus. I really need your next vid on skiing the deep stuff off piste please!!!

  • @lafemmecat06 I also have this DVD and love it.. I want to send a video of myself to send out for analysis but I never get around to it... I watch other people ski when I am on the lift and I see most of them either leaning to the inside, rotating, or skiing in the backseat... Just like Klaus said...lol

  • 10x a lot man

  • Nice video, although stop making it look so easy! ;)

  • Nicee!

  • that really helped i have just been to the snow and it was alot easier to carve

  • i just laughed so much at the guy falling over at 1:37

  • Great video. a good carve turn is so satisfying. Thanks for posting. The better I ski the more I enjoy it.

  • excellent video - excellent teacher

  • Best purchase EVER!

  • Thanks. I am inspired to practice this

  • Nicely done!

  • Thanks for this video, the video production is good and I like the drills you suggest. I'll give them a workout next weekend.

  • Thanks a lot! IT WORKED VERY WELL!

  • Great teacher , cool music . Thanks

  • very good lesson ! thx

i practice ski since ~12 years, i'm 19 years old now, i'm good at normal skiing but i've never practiced carving.

i've watched this video this weekend, and this monday i've tried carving :D

that was awsome, and very easy.

    thx alot :D

  • LOL @ 1:35

  • Rofl!

  • gah the winter olympics make me wanna go skiiing and this makes me want to even more.i thought i was an intermediate at carving but wow im pretty amateur.i was only turning one knee in and the other one was straight like you would turn in hockey, and i didnt know you have to lean away from the turn a bit because i was turning into the turn and barely falling over.thanks for this.

  • Love your lessons , I will try this next trip to the mountains. Thank you so very much.

  • ty great lesson

  • 凄い!!

    どうもありがとう。参考にします!^0^

  • thx! this helped me ALOOOOT!

  • wow, this does not only look great, but it helped me finding out about better turns and bends.

Last weekend I took another skiing lesson and the trainer told me to move all my weight on to the leg that is down the hill, i.e. outside the bend. I really had problems with that and felt uncomfortbale and sometimes unsafe. Now I know why. Your technique definitely makes sense and I'l try it next time :)

  • I've been having junior racers do this same drill but instead reach their opposite hand across the body to steer the knee. It seems to open the hips and orient shoulders down the fall line more. Comments?

  • Thank you VERY MUCH. Can't wait to try this on the slopes. It helped ver much.

  • Really nice video m8!

    Good work!

  • very nice lesson

  • Off to Austria tomorrow and going to practice this big time............

  • Best carving lesson.

  • That's how I teach my students (2:40min)! They're almost immediately doing it right and are pretty amazed by the feeling of such turn:)

  • Thanks huwowen93 for bringing that to my attention...as many times I have seen this vid, I damn near split my gut laughing this time. I can honestly say I have been there! By the way, the vid is great and can't wait to give these techniques a go.

  • thank u VM !

  • I really liked this video. I've been skiing for several years now but I feel like this video gives some valuable info no matter what skill level the skier is at. No matter how good you get, checking out your fundamentals every once in awhile is definitely a good thing to do. I know I'll be doing just that when I finally get my first run in this season!

  • My god that looks so awesome!

I'm gonna try carving for the first time in my life on saturday! can't wait.

I'm pretty good at normal skiing, so hopefully I wont have to much trouble getting used to carving.

  • Nice! ..but look in-between his legs at 1.35 ..hilarious!

  • i'm pretty sure that was a wedge-christie into a faceplant.

  • @huwowen93 After seeing the DVD and realizing that Klaus has his own special sense of humor, I wouldn't be surprised if he told the guy in the background to fall on purpose for comic affect. :)

  • thanks helped alot

  • Nice! You rail your skis well. You talk pretty well too. Since I use your trick to put my hand on my knees and look my skis. I feel like a fly. I ski and see your image in my head. i need to control with my inside ski and rail the outside, it make me look like i carve. i train my neck to be able to increase my inclination. I feel like Im on my CBR. Youtube is great because it can't see quality just words an number.

I will put some vids this winter. i hope you will be able to correct me.

  • haha lol....guy in background 1:37

  • Very very good practice stuff with the hands on the knees, and you very clearly explain that the upper body is key to carving, but should not be moved.

    thank you

  • Great video clip.

Inspirational instructing, and solid demonstrations. I'm a ski instructor myself and may use this method in my lessons (if you don't mind)!!

    Thanks!

  • great demonstration. thanks.

  • awsome job Klaus !!! Watchin this video carving seems to be very easy ... That is what make this video better then any other

  • Thanks so much. I can't wait to use this next time!

  • love carving.. one of the best feelings in the world

  • This looks like a really good way of getting carving started. I'm looking forward to trying this technique to help my neices. I use something similar when explaining tele-turns (esp. on steeps). As you transition between turns and you begin to come parallel with the fall line, you try to touch your outside knee with your opposite elbow. This really forces your upper body into the correct position and allows your skis to angle and carve. It's great fun.

  • Great job!

I would just add a precision.. the carving explained there should not be seen as a technique itself (depending on the type of feeling youre looking for, of course). Its more like a way to make your turns better, more dynamic. The turns still start with a good footwork, and that should never be forgotten). You surely understand this, because its done perfectly in your free turns at the end.. but most intermediate/advanced skier dont!

but excellent job, its a good thing to publish that!

  • Thank you for your comment. The clip is for intermediate skiers that want to discover carving or want to improve their carving skills. As you point out this is just one skill of many that lead to better skiing. The most important ski fundamentals are covered in the other 80 minutes of the DVD and give a more complete explanation of the perfect turn.

  • Brilliant! Having a skier put his hands on his knees automatically takes care of most balance, angulation, etc. issues. Keep those skis arcing!

  • Very good video, exact!

  • I bought this dvd, it has soooo muhc information and instructional techniques, you would pay over 600 buck for a private lesson to have some half asses ski instructor tell you this on the slopes, i paid 60 for the dvd and a free analysis....awesome dvd

  • wow i totally understand this now

  • 5:15 I'm thrilled!

  • great video

  • thanks alot! got out there after watching this and got it down pretty quickly

  • Awesome! Using edges correctly has always been hard for me. You make it easy to understand. I am so going to try this in a few months..as so as we get some snow here.

  • Great video and instruction - well done. It's consistent with what I was taught this week and I went from basic snowplough turns to some decent carving using these techniques. The only additional stresses we had in our lesson was to get used to leaning down the hill (which is counter intuitive) and that the reason we are trying to get onto the edges on both skis is to let the natural profile of the ski edges to take you round the corner (sounds obvious now but wasn't to me at first).

  • This Video was so informative, thanks for putting it up.

  • mammoth baby

  • great lesson, i hope i can achieve that....=P

  • Thanks for that video. I will try this technique as soon as i get to buller.

  • just finished watching your video, it helped a lot. I am heading up to Mt Hood and can't wait to work on the things I learned.

    Thank you from Portland, Oregon.

  • Great video Klaus! I'm actually at Mammoth right now.

  • Hi klaus I'm Luca from Italy, I bought ur DVD in January. I applied immediately ur lessons in Nassfeld Austria (the place that I usually go becouse is the best close where I live). I have to send my congratulations becouse I discovered immediate improvements, now I enjoy ski much than before..and I've not finish to improve (especially in ski the steps)...

    some questions:

    A) which skies do u use in it?I got VolklP60jellowSL165...

    B) do u get lessons in Austria?

    Thanx a lot again!!

    Luca

  • Dear Luca, thank you for your feedback!

    - On all the clips I am skiing on a Nordica Dobermann SL-R WC.

    - I am teaching in Austria for the ski school of ZÜRS in the Arlberg region.

I hope you have a few great ski days left! Keep me posted on your progress! Greets, Klaus

  • thanks from Italy

  • I just got back from a week in Utah, and thought I was doing this. Watching your video makes me realize I am actualy turning the whole ski with my foot when I go side to side. On the steep blacks it's the only thing keeping me from flying down the mountain on my head. Can you really carve your way down a steep nice and slowly?

  • Thank you for this question. My carving lesson is an introduction to carving for intermediate skiers, that know how to slide. In steeper terrain it is an important skill to be able to slide to take speed out. The first steps in carving should be made on a very easy hill, with few people on it. Once you discovered how to carved you can use this technique if you want to speed up, but you always want to make sure to be able to turn your feet and slide to slow down if necessary.

  • This is the best explanation of carving I've ever seen- I am deaf so subtitles would sure help....even without them I could SEE what you were doing. Thanks!

  • is this at mammoth?

  • Yes it is.

  • oh cool. i'm a j3 racer for alpine meadows in north lake tahoe. i'm in the process of my coach teaching me how to bodycarve just for fun :P....and with all of this fresh powder from the storm last week how can u go wrong?? haha thanks for the vid. peace

  • Wow. This must be the best carving explanation I've ever seen, BY FAR. From zero to extremefuncarving in like one five minutes lesson.

Now I also understand why carving is quite easy to learn when your'e a race boarder: it's exactly the same movement as a carved backside turn on the raceboard (see @3'44" ).

    This is an amazing video,

    thanks & Cheers David

  • Wow!

I have just started skiing and I am really impressed with your video. Probably it is too basic to ask here but I have one question: Are you still pressuring front side of the boots during the turns? In the video, it looked like it is important -and happening- between the turns when you come up, but during the turns it is not that essential. Am I right?

    Thanks!

  • Thank you. You are perfectly right. There is a whole chapter on balance on the DVD that explains this in detail.

  • Hallo Klaus,

You are a text book example, congrats...

What do you think about ELAN SPEEDWAVE 14 ski's?

  • I have not skied it, but it did very well in some of the reviews that i read. Make sure to test it before you buy.

  • I've bought speedwave 14, and tested them at Nassfeld/Hermagor last week. It feels allmost like ice skating, hehehe. Do you ski at Nassfeld?

  • Im also a proud owner of your awesome DVD. I'm thrilled and cant wait to practise it in the snow (tomorrow i'm otw Fiss). We will make some videos which i'll sent to you for analyzing. Thx again for the inspirating DVD.

  • Thank you. I am happy that you like the DVD and look forward to analyzing your clips! Klaus

  • Thanks for putting this up. This is going to help.

  • Your DVD is simply awesome.

Originally, I'm from Africa but I live in Canada (Québec) and started skiing with some colleague. They are so impressed by my improvements that I had to tell them about my secret (Sofa Ski School)! HaHaHa!

    Keep the great work.

  • perfect lesson, excellent music!!!

keep up the good work - both

skiing and teaching performance are fascinating.

    ;)

  • Really good lesson. You are obviously a brilliant skier. I will try everything you said.

  • I Bought the DVD,

It's very very good and i recommend it to anybody who is a serious skier

  • The Video is cool but the music is the best part.

  • This is the best ski lesson video I have ever seen. My husband purchased the dvd and we brought it to our ski vacation to Steamboat Springs in Colorado and we watch it every night while we ski and practice the skills during the day. We took actual lessons here and there a few times, but your dvd is the best lesson we could find! It is so inspiring, whenever we watch it, we cannot wait to ski!

    Thank you, Mair Klaus!

  • G8 video,,,,,, thx man,,,,

  • Fantastic video. I'm currently in Sun Valley and am tired of my intermediate style of turning. I am going to practice with your drills and see if I can't make a better carved turn. Great lesson and great teacher!

  • hey, great video! i've seen a lot of teaching videos to improve my technique but this one is the easiest to understand so far :)

I have a question though: how do you do this quick slalom carving technique at the end of the video without getting to fast? that's my biggest problem i can only do 2 or 3 turns when doing small fast turns and then i have to do a "classical" curve to brake.

  • Make sure that you finish the turn enough to control your speed or intentionally slide more to take speed out. The reason for getting faster and faster in short turns usually lies in fundamental mistakes. If you are off balance, if you cannot create enough outside ski pressure quick enough, or if your upper body is too unstable you will have trouble to steer the skis out of the fall line enough and you pick up speed with every turn. You find all the necessary info + drills on my DVD to fix that.

  • Great lesson, one of the the best of the instructional clips I've seen on here. I'm looking to improve my technique and this looks helpful. Where is the dvd available to buy from? And is it available in region 1 (UK and Europe) format? Thanks!

  • Thank you. You can order the DVD on my webpage. The DVD comes region free and plays on any DVD player.

  • This is awesome!

  • Fantastic! I am trying to get to this next step. Off to Snowbird in a month for 7 days. With luck and practice I'll look just like that.

  • good teacher!!!!

  • Great video, easy too understand. Thanks for posting!

  • im going to mammoth to ski with some friends..but i never even touched snow before

  • That's great. Take some lessons and make sure that you learn the basics correctly. That your friends know how to ski does not mean that they can show you how it is done. Have a great time and stay safe!

  • thanks!

  • Love the music as well!

  • awesome, good job klausi ;) see u

  • Wow, this looks like so much fun!

  • i love at the end where he jumps out of his turn and right into the next

  • thanks men it worked well for me yeasterday..........thanks allot

  • Great lesson, thanks! :)

  • perfect carvin!!

  • Cool !

    I'll go and try it ! =)

  • this dvd really helped

now i can take the entire mountain!

one question, where did you shoot this clip?

the runs look awesome and i want to know where the resort is

    thanks!

  • The DVD was shot in beautiful Mammoth Mountain/California.

  • Very helpfull. And i love the music. Drum and bass forever :)

  • excellent tutorial! i am considering to purchase the DVD. anyone have any feedback on it? is the DVD helpful at all? i mean it is only the cost of a one and a half hour group lesson.

  • Thank you! The DVD has a total play time of 84 minutes and has the main focus on personal ski improvement. You can find further reviews on my homepage.

  • >anyone have any feedback?

just purchased it. I watched it several times carefully and then I went to try it on the snow, carrying with me the useful memo cards where there are key points and exercises. In just few hours of practicing the results are exceptional. I was already a good "skidding" skier with a first impact with carving skis bad. In few hours I can carve, touch snow with my hands and perform short runs. I'm enthusiast. I suggest short radius skis to practice.
