The Banshees guitarist left mid-tour after an argument, and The Cure were the support act, so Robert Smith stepped in. I remember that tour, although I didn't manage to get a ticket.

OPEN UP YOUR EYES! This for me as a kid was my 'Bowie moment on Top of the Pops'. I was never quite the same again. Siouxsie was so hot-mess sexy, evocative, dangerous and wonderful. And the way Robert Smith played the guitar. Who the hell was this guy?!! I was hard-wired into a whole new landscape in my musical education from then on in.

@buroun2020 Yes. In fact Robert Smith was in the band ( at the same time a being in The Cure and The Glove ) for the album Hyaena and the tour ( captured on the Nocturne album ) around the same time.

@71eliott I'd forgotten Robert started with them. He is playing the VOX teardrop guitar too (just like Ian Curtis), but what a weird way of playing with hand over the top of the fretboard?

@Someguyfrom1973 - Since they are not actually playing live he probably did that as a joke. There is a video of The Cure playing Primary (I think) where he is doing the same thing.
