in a way i wished i had seen it, the big Union Jack hanging outside the Grainger bar was my most prominent memory of that day........... good times gentlemen, good times :D
I remember Prince Charlie visiting, i was walking up Northbourne Street with a football under my arm (must have been 16 or 17) as the ticker tape and barriers were going up in preparation for the Royal visit and a copper asked me if i was sticking around to see 'old jug lugs'? and i said "Naaa.... away to Elswick park for a game of 5 a side"!!.
Two rottweillers i remember them! My Jack Russell chased one of them off one day, funny as fk! They had funny names ? one of them was called something like Zelda or something? or am i trippin? I also remember the 'cheeky Asian bird that run the chippy, one day i got some chips and there was no white paper wrapping the chips and when i opened them up my chips were covered in fkin ink! she wouldn't take them back either!
I remember watching paddy's episode on MacIntyres Underworld and I thought he was a hard bastard then. Ive just finished reading Bernard OMahoneys book 'Fog On The Tyne' and now I understand why he's a hard bastard. It isnt out of choice, its out of necessity...a hard local man, with hard local values...nowt wrong with that.
that was brilliant !
