Wow! Get that POS Gibson thing off the top of that Mark IV and learn how to use the Mark IV. Dude, those settings are whack! No way should your master volume be that high, not to mention your EQ settings; what the hell, man??!!!
I've owned my Mark IV for 10 years. I could show you how to properly run that amp and you would piss yourself.
I wouldn't listen to all of these chumps who talk about how "terrible" your sound is. It would be comical just to watch most of them sit down and TRY to operate it. You don't sound bad. The IV is one of the best amps ever created. I've owned mine for one year, and am still discovering new and amazing organic tones and feels daily. People who say that Mesa's (Marks) sound like crap are usually lazy, unpatient people who want instant gratification. Marks are great at absolutly every style of music
I'm not so inclined to to say it is "god awful," but you could defenitly smooth that bad boy out (quite a bit) and still retain your "crunch." I should know owning two of them and a V.
@astro2069 I can't really say because both the IV and the V are equally the most incredible amps I have ever owned, played, or heard. Marks take a bit of time to really learn but the payoff is incredible. The IV is actually tougher to dial in than the V. Once you do learn how to dial them and grasp how they work, they will provide limitless tonal bliss. In short, here's how I would define them: IV = The most organic sounding and feeling amp ever made. V = Pure Perfection. Both are outstanding.
@astro2069 The cool thing about Marks is that once you understand which controls effect others, you can dial in ANY tone in history and create all kinds of new ones as well. The funny thing is that all of those tones are the defenition of pure perfection. The ceiling is unlimited with the Mesa Boogie mark IV and/or V. I run my IV and V in stereo and do ozzy, rush, holdsworth, pink floyd, ratt, journey, grateful dead, morbid angel, pantera, orginals, etc. They do it all.
@gitarysk Mark Series? or "Generally Mesa amps"? Because if you're really talking about "Generally Mesa amps" then you obviously haven't plugged into an Electra Dyne. Hahah...Try talking to anyone who has really played through a real Plexi and an Electra Dyne. Not only can the Electra Dyne nail a great Plexi sound spot on, it blows it out of the water...oh yea, not to mention that the Electra Dyne's are much more consistant amp to amp. Simply put, the ED is everything the Plex ever wanted to be.
@boogie51788 Yes Electra Dyne and Stiletto are designed to sound British but they don't sound as good as the JCM 900 SL-X
I would consider Marshall, Blackstar or Orange for British sound and they cost less
yes I can get a lot of sounds out of my mine but it's just pain to find those sound as the knobs are super sensitive and even a 1/8 turn changes the sound a lot so I'm not sure if I can say that I'm happy with mine. to me Mesa gain sounds good but not as good as Marshall ..less character
@gitarysk I'll give you that. The IV is DEFENTILY NOT for the impatient, or those looking for instant gratification. But once the controls are truely understood as to how they effect eachother and sound, the payoff is unbelievable. I think what a lot of people find to be a lack of character in a Boogie is actually their lack of knowledge as to how a Mark (or any Boogie) operates. That being said, Boogies are VERY clear and non-forgiving.some people can't play on, or don't like amps like that.
@gitarysk I respect your comment though. It's nice to see somebody who actually has an opinion of their own as to why they don't like something, instead of just talking crap. Well said gitarysk :)
@StefanPribagu wtf?? Sounds nothing alike. Obviously you dont know anything about guitar amps. If you could hear this amp in room, it sounds nothing like the marshall 2203 (which was used to record RTL)
yeah like hes better than someone who doesn't play for money who owns their own company but is so cool and talented that they play guitar in their spare time as well as many other successful things...
fair comment, but all i was really saying is why do people have to make snide comments about someone who has committed the 'crime' of trying to demo some gear for their benefit? if you don't have anything good to say, then surely STFU is the best option. no?
1) Its a 1x12 combo, not a half-stack. 2) Hes in a concrete based room+Echoplex. 3) Hes playing is FINE. 4) Camera mic SUCKS!, everyone needs to quit bitching.
Man i Love the mesas! i need to get myself one of these or a Dual or Triple Rectifier, i love my Marshall MG100HDFX but solid state can't compare to tubes, especially for Thrash
I'm guessing the camera mic is distorting heavily from the volume with the way his Rhythm 1 channel is breaking up. I can't get that channel to break up like that even with really hot pickups on mine.
Come on people, please realize that camcorder microphones make every amp sound like crap and bubbling mud. With that said, most people who upload videos are not sound technicians/recording engineers so give them a break. Keep rockin with whatever you got.
ok...good but my traynor ygl-3 2x12 combo sound better ...just beacause mesa sound too mid....and put the mid at 0 and...we hear mid again and again...just my opinion ...but the clean is awesome...i m a metal player
mesa mk4 is a VERY midrangey amp, very honky, think santana, so the mid scoop is a wise thing to do with this amp, even john petrucci scoop the mids out his markIVs
yep very mid ranged amp, is what makes them so loud, I tend to scoop a lot of mids for my rhythm sound for the definition between the notes in sticatto and chug type rhythms and speedy type as well, being a metal player. Too much mids on speed metal rhythms make it kind of messy. Though I boost them for my leads cuz they add a ton of character and natural harmonic overtones to a lead sound, just my opinion though.
I've got a Mesa DC-5 (basically a Mark IV, but with 2 channels with a pull boost on the rhythm), and it's a sick amp too; perfect for playing brutal stuff (I'm a Death fan too). How much low end does the Mark IV have? Have you played it through a 2x12 or 4x12? It sounds like it could have used just a tad more punch in the low end, but overall it sounds really nice.
Wow! Get that POS Gibson thing off the top of that Mark IV and learn how to use the Mark IV. Dude, those settings are whack! No way should your master volume be that high, not to mention your EQ settings; what the hell, man??!!!

@boogie51788 Generally Mesa amps don't do it all
a Boogie can't sound like overdriven plexi no matter what you do with it
they have they signature sound and break up that no other amp can do

Seriously, you can tell his playing/tone shaping is great. There isn't a mesa that doesn't sound bad in person.
Just isn't recorded well.

the same reason that when he goes to clean it sounds distorted, bad camera

The clean is distorted because he is using hot humbuckers and his Rth 1 gain is too high.
