My issue is with people that buy that 2000 dollar Civic, spray paint it orange, put lots of stickers for JDM stuff they don't even have equipped, buy a spoiler, cut the springs (often at uneven heights), put a stupid exhaust on it and then act like it's a racecar even though it stll has only 80 horsepower.

These cars look so much better when all you have in and inch or two of tailpipe past the bumper cover and the entire muffler under the car. Otherwise it looks like a "back yard" special installation.

your right a muffler doesnt, but an actual cat back exhaust system with bigger piping, teamed with a 4-2-1 header, yes will do something for your car. You see relieving some, not all, of the back pressure, will allow more air to go into the cylinder, which means more combustion. you can always place a silencer on the car to make it sound less ricer-y. so instead of going around hating on dumb things, read up, or go use google or something
