I have no doubt that 'Sword of the Stranger' will become an anime feature-film classic but it takes time. At the moment the only studios that the Western mainstream film industry seems to recognise are Disney/Pixar and Ghibli. In another few years this film will be playing on the telly at Christmas just like Howl's Moving Castle and Nausicaa. Stuff this good doesn't go ignored for long.

When I watch an anime with a setting based in Japan, I expect to see people that look Japanese and an atmosphere that resembles old Japan. Why do these directors add half boy half girl looking characters and color their eyes purple, green, grey, blue, yellow or whateveryoucallit. @chargeNkill The Japanese don't like to look at themselves in animated form (this has been said by big time animators; I forget who though). However, the people in this movie aren't outlandishly colored, and are mostly 'realistic.' The main character and the caucasian villain are both foreigners, and are never stated to be Japanese or Chinese at all. That's part of the point of the movie, that the two outsiders who are reviled by both cultures are the strongest fighters present in all of this.
Actually I disagree, the characters looked much more Asian than they do in most animes and defiantly not as girly! I believe they made him white with blue eyes and blond hair because it would be threatening and scary to the Japanese people who were very unfamiliar with such things hence the reason he's called a "blue eyed demon,". I'm actually glad they didn't give him a back story or explain how he got to China, he would end up being the awwww he just needs a hug villain.

finally got the movie today and it blew me away. the movie has a lot of heart despite being very gory and unlike most anime movies that build up to a final showdown, this didn't dissapoint. not one bit.
Too many positive nods can't be a good thing as it sometimes tends to make the product overrated. But rest assured, that this time the hype is completely warranted. I haven't seen a samurai movie (including live action) since The Twilight Samurai. The story, animation, art direction, and music all just clicked.
I just watched it today and I'm in love!!! I'm usually not into those bloody violence sort of movies, this was the first I could actually stand without closing my eyes. It's a must see, go watch it please!

Seirei no moribito? It doesn't have as many action scenes but when they do they are amazing! But it's mostly character development and the few filler episodes it has actually contributes to the story.

I wasn't basing it on him; I was basing it on an army of white men who invaded the near east in the 1000's, and another army that invaded the Americas in the 1500's.
of course, a substantial portion of that second army was sephardic Jewish more than white. Most of the Americas, were conquered by sephardic Jews, that is where a lot of the cruelty towards the natives came from.

ultimately this is just an anime.
all swordplay is, like all martial arts, is a skill, and skill is tempered by the person's own work ethic, that is really all it boils down to. I also understand why swordsmen were respected; they worked that hard, to become that skilled, for other people, not for themselves.
That is why, the good swordsmen at least, deserve respect. By contrast, swordsmen like European swordsmen deserve nothing but contempt.

A sword is not about butchering people, but the skillful use of a killing tool, to prevent others from being killed by the irresponsible. One could argue, that the idea of human rights was created in the west, so that the west could have manipulative moral ground to condemn the peoples who seek rightful retalliation against them.

However, because it represents defending other people's lives, mastery of skill with a sword defined a "true man," someone willing to use their skill not for themselves but for other people, the so-called code of chivalry. Chivalry and honor codes evolved, because it is a very dangerous skill, last thing you wanted was a trained killer running around killing people.

Its not so much what the sword is, but what it represents, namely, a tool for a necessary skill. What defines a man, more than anything, most men, is his skill. As the world of days past was very dangerous, the most valued skill was that of a swordsman, because it was the most difficult to master. It is unapreciated today because, being a cutting tool no one thinks about how difficult it was for just ONE of those men to reach old age.

At first I used to think that a sword was merely a sharpened metal stick, but its not so much what it is, but what it represents. I can still enjoy this entertainment, but now I realize, these movies are an insult to swordmen of days past, at least the good ones, from all over the world. By "good" I mean,both good people, as well as highly skilled, and any culture that could smelt steel produced swordsmen.

Ninja Scroll is good. I also like Princess Mononoke... it's not a ninja or samurai theme but it's really good... one of my favorites.

This is one of the best anime films I've ever seen since Ninja Scroll! Not only is it action-packed, but it's surprisingly touching. This movie is definitely worth having as part of your DVD library!

Too many positive nods can't be a good thing as it sometimes tends to make the product overrated. But rest assured, that this time the hype is completely warranted. I haven't seen a samurai movie (including live action) since The Twilight Samurai. The story, animation, art direction, and music all just clicked.
