Yeah but that't not survival of the fittest... it's more like survival of the luckiest! Even the ones that run fast couldn't outrun most land-dwelling animals that would eat them. How can such a little, stumbling bird escape a fox or some other predator like that... it's only a matter of not getting spotted, and that's just dumb luck.
Personally I think this species doesn't stand many chances unless it evolves.
They've done fine thus far, plus Survival of the Fittest still applies, because any 'unfit' chicks, e.g birth defects or undernourished, will run much slower, and hence will make much easier meals for the predators. So they are more likely to die.
Its not so much Survival of the Fittest as Death of the Weakest, but in the end it works out the same.
The point is that by running fast, there's less time on the ground, and therefore less time for predators to spot them. Any chicks who run slow are going to be vulnerable for a much longer period - a potentially fatal one.
This is sliding into speculation. By now, all the points have been made.
Still. My previous observations aside, I notice that the whole setup begs the question. I suppose that since murrelets spend their adult lives at sea, they don't need to be able to run fast as adults. So why put the chicks through this test? So that the next generation runs faster, so that they in turn can survive without protection when they're young? Why not just protect the babies in the first place? Circular, isn't it.
LOL killersushi99. But poor things. Just imagine, sounds to me more like a nightmare, running in the dark forrest, looking for your parrents, who go even further every time, geee, how scarring.

When all the chicks who didn't run died.

The chicks that don't make it die of course. Keeps the gene pull strong. Have you not heard of survival of the fittest?

That will work if some amazing-super-speed mutation appears soon. The running I see in the video doesn't really cut it.
