  • i was there during sammy millers run i stood in the front making pictures.

by the way i was in the paddock and i spoke to mr miller. He is from texas and he said a highpressured tank of nitrogen serves as propulsiongas for the other tank filled with hydrogenperoxide ( hear him with a texas accent!!!) it blowes through a pipe with a honeycombshaped grid at the end of the pipe causing a chemical reaction to make two gasses come together namely hydrogen en oxigen. it's a thrustrocket from NASA!!!!

  • my 60ft isn't even that fast :(

  • I saw this car when he did the record at Santa Pod. It still is THE most amazing thing I have ever seen. Its a hydrogen peroxide rocket, same as lunar landing vehicle.

    Mike

  • i love santa pod went there from age of 7 till 27 took my son at age of 3 and he still goes now my dad passed away 5 years ago i took flowers to pod as that was my best memorys was with him i miss him so

  • @julielarman189

i find your post very moving, i have been a fan and participant since 1963 although not as a driver (well once)

your taking flowers to the pod is very touching

    Norman

  • how do these compare to the modern day Top Fuels? Which are faster?

  • Bring back the rocket cars! Fastest accelerating cars in the history of the world and I never got to see one in person! (I know it can't happen ,but I can whinge in hopes can't i?)

  • luckily there's no bunny on the road

  • 0-110mph in 0.96 secs

  • that is like comedy fast !! just awsome

  • I bet his body hurt after running that thing

  • oh my f**king god!

  • propulsion is by hydrogen peroxide. mixed with oxygen it expands at a massive rate.they used a thruster off a lunar landing vehicle. his 0-60 time was too fast to get. 0-100 m.p.h. was in 0.36 of a second pulling 12g's.

  • but what was the quarter mile time???? so amazingly stupid to make such a video and not state the time..

  • @DanFrederiksen ahem.... read the description

  • @R35Man it says eigth mile in the description. not quarter

  • Rocket cars are insanely fast....

they reach 200 mp/h when a F1 driver notice the green light.....lol.....but its true...:)

  • He was and still is a true hero.

  • I STRONGLY hope them to be sanctioned again in the States someday in the near future.

  • wow

  • 400 mph in 4 seconds, ouch.

  • Apparently the reason these cars are not running any more is because the tracks cannot get public liability insurance to allow them to run. The G-Forces applied to the driver were causing them to lose consciousness. Vanishing Point did have an issue with obtaining 90% Hydrogen Peroxide fuel but I believe it was overcome. Tragically Sammy Miller was killed a few years ago in a workplace accident. He was a super guy and the real driving force behind the rocket cars at Santa Pod,UK. RIP Sammy.

  • @mikegeetarsmith super guy? not according to his former partner who sued him for patent infringement. (can't recall his name but I read his version of the story) Guy was a former NASA rocket engineer, designed the motors that allowed VP to really hit insane speeds, worked with Sammy from I think '79-'82. The real money was in using HP for oil drilling and sammy allegedly ripped off his inventions. He was killed messing with something he knew little about. I may only know half that story.

  • Okay I went and looked it up, his name is Ron Vigneri and another review shows Ron doesn't really dis Sammy as bad as I recalled in fact he has fond memories of the personal relationship ("like brothers") but is pretty blunt about the business aspect which may have been soured by third parties and a little greed. Google Ron Vigneri Vetech Rocket Car History page should be near the top and if you are a fan this is a very worthwhile historical read. RIP Sammy, daredevils forever.

  • in the 70s and 80s they ran almost at 400 mph/ 640 kph in the 3 second range. Its a shame they were banned from racing. Imagine how fast they could run today with technology and better aerodinamics

  • Banned from racing? Vanishing point doesnt run purely because they cant get hold of the fuel needed to power it.

  • Yes, banned from racing, they were outlawed in the US. This phenomenon only lasted about 10 years and many of these records still stand to this date. Sammy Miller, Ky Michealson and others turned these cars into land locked missiles. Nobody do this anymore

  • This is a controlled explosion propelled car. It's a bomb with a nozzle in the side of it so pressure can escape.

  • i want to comment but I'm at a loss for words

  • you just did idiot

  • I am too, Psu. Why the hard left land turn for a car that is at speed, designed to go only straight?

  • i saw sammy miller at santa pod in england. the man is a god. sadly missed

  • that funny car was the baddest car, I remember seeing it run when i was about eight or nine years old. he ran the car at an event at englishtown raceway park back in the day. i told people about the car for years and nobody believed that there was ever a rocket car that ran so fast...if i never saw it with my own eyes, i may not have either. but it was and is true... over twenty five years later... that was a BADD car... thanks.

  • Rocket engine was Oxygen/Hydrogen Peroxide mixed by a valve that was the throttle. Same as a thruster motor on a spacecraft. They were only running when the valve opened. That's why its not running on the starting line-to inch forward the valve was opened and closed for a microsecond-big bang and the car jumped forward to position. THey were outlawed by NHRA and AHRA. Too fast and dangerous. LOL Boy, they were cool.

  • Agreed. No one would want to be inside that vehicle at such extreme forces. Let's keep it conjectural, shall we? Woeful. A cause for sorrow or regret!

  • Zandvoort had niet korter moeten zijn ;-)

  • Thats when you tape $100 bill to the dash and say its yours if you can grab it.

R.I.P guy, i never met you but you were badass.

  • AT that speed, I wonder if the tape would be enough to keep it from just flying to the guy anyway.

  • Fuck you and your family too

    assssssssssss

  • I saw this car in 84 or 85 at Santa pod Raceway in England. It was unbelievable. 1/4 mile in 2.6 sec i believe.

  • He was killed from a explosion in a Texas oilfield. I spent most of my late teens with Sammy street racing and was in his pit crew with his first dragster. He was really a great guy and will be remembered by me fondle. J Noll

  • the engine develops 30.000 hp,and will pull 12G's. exhaust speed is 6000 ft.sec. by 600c.

  • think my civic can beat that? jk, i would never buy a civic

  • I think the engine is a Lunar rocket motor? My blackbird would do better than that LOL!

  • Jaa!!

ik was erbij daar in zantvoort

ik heb dit live gezien en ik vergeet het nooit meer

  • if he ran 1/8 in 1.6sec shouldn't he do the 1/4 in perhaps 2.4sec with an 8G avg acceleration?

    anyway this is amazing!!!

  • amına kodumun salağı aya gitseydin bari rampa koyup, işin iyice boku çıktı, yakında normal araba kalmıcak piyasada

  • it cant run the 1\8 in 1.7

and the 1\4 in 3.5 with an acceleration of 6g. no maths

  • What exactly is the purpolsion? I don't see a flame :S

  • See some reaction further on, thanks for watching

  • @BarkingSpider455 Its pushing out pressurized oxygen

  • In an oil field were he was working not sure exacally how he died though

  • He fell off an oil rig iirc

  • not true

  • then what is true?

  • He was killed in a explosion in a Texas oil field. Sammy and I did a lot of street racing in the late sixty's then I was in his pit crew with his first dragster. He was really a great guy and a good friend and will be missed by many... J Noll

  • Sammy did die in an oil field accident in 2002, saving his son's life.. Oneil's run was unoffcial. Flying quarter miles don't count.

  • in a fire on a oil field i belive

  • max acceleration as measured in g's for a wheel-driven vehicle is around 3.35 g's. Any greater torque and you loose traction. G's immediately drop off. Rocket's are capable of achieving 400 g's of accleration. Ground-based anti-missile missiles routinely demonstrate this. 8 g's as is widely quoted for wheel-driven dragsters is Hollywood fantasy .. 3.35 g's max. Instantaneous or otherwise.

  • 3.35g?

    Can you explain Tony Schumacher's current 1/8 times around 3.1 @ 440 km/h?

That is an average of around 3.9g for 3 seconds. Peak can be a bit higher, above 4g.

  • not bad. i think he's finaly ready to take on my matiz

  • This guy burst blood vessles and also broke ribs on some "good" runs! a true legend, if only they could do something like this again. i never got to see Sammy, missed his last run at Santa Pod's Speedfreaks Ball i was gutted.. R.I.P thanks for the video buddy!

  • i wonder what the G's are during a run like that.

  • trans - I understand that the record quarter mile was run by Kitty O'Neil in a rocket dragster in 1977. 0-412 mph in 3.22 seconds. Assuming a linear acceleration curve, the average g-force for the run would be about 5.9 g. That's a pretty heft load to sustain. I'm not sure that getting shot out of a cannon would be any gentler.

  • I thought your figure was too low but you're right. Imagine they did away with the safety rules and ran a car at a constant 10g which fighter pilots can endure - what would be the top speed and time?????

  • Pulling 6 Gs is extremely punishing. I'll take you at your word that fighter pilots sustain 10 Gs (I simply don't know), but would quickly add that fighter pilots are highly trained and extremely fit AND wear G-suits.

As to your question, at a constant 10 Gs, you'd be adding 218 mph every second: 0 to 1000 mph in 4.58 seconds...I wouldn't want to take that ride.

  • i agree with your math but the record is by sammy miller@3.54 seconds

  • robduude - Which Sammy Miller record is @ 3.54seconds??...the 1/4 mile?

The info I quoted above on Kitty O'Neil's record 1/4 mile was cited by numerous sources, including wiki. I'll graciouly admit I could be wrong.

  • no your right i checked it wiki actually states that this is contrary to wide-held beleif that sammy miller holds the record im sorry i beleived the first one i read which i cant even remember the name of

  • Sammy hold the fastest (drag) on a drag strip kitty Oneils was faster but was done on a dry lake bed so the both hold records in there own right secondly acceleration of the line in these rocket cars was about 10g upto 12g and fighter jets can sustain around 9g the wings cannot cope with further pressure

  • o ok thanks i was confused lol thanks a lot for the info

  • Fighter jets' 9G limitation has little to do with their wings and everything to do with the squishy soft things beneath their canopies.

  • WOW!!!

  • Awesome video. Remember when speed records were fun and these cars were built in garages instead of aerospace factories? Guy's like Sammy were a breed apart. God Bless Him.

  • in fact the record is hold by kitty o'neil running on 3.22 and 396mph

  • Those twin bottles in the front of the car is the source of the power? is it similar to knocking the valve off a pressured cylinder? This type of racer is new to me, so please bear my ignorance.

  • In these cilinders is hydro-oxygen on high pressure, and it is pressed through a perforated silver plate causing an chemical reaction wich expanse the volume a few thousand times.and there is one way out.( look out for the blast)on the back. Thanks for watching

  • @herman125 I don't know what hydro-oxygen is, the fuel source is over 90% concentrated hydrogen peroxide.

  • @lookn4thepowpow nos bottles mate

  • I saw slammin' Sammy a couple of times at Santa Pod in the early 80's, truly awesome. Thanks for the vid.

  • to bad he died eh

  • How??

  • some sorta accident

  • Really? ;-)

    :-(

  • my 1.4 would have him! Fuk me thats fast..

  • amazing

  • anasını sikiyim bunu sürenin

  • this car(sammy Mille) Ran 1/4 in 3.54sec and 386mp/h(621km/t) this time..It was in 1984 and world record that STILL STANDS TODAY

  • amına kodumun salağı aya gitseydin bari rampa koyup, işin iyice boku çıktı, yakında normal araba kalmıcak piyasada

  • olm rocketcar insanmısın sen ya (:

  • Apparently it would have been faster but the driver left the hand brake on by mistake.

  • I agree santa pod wins ! I have been going since i was 8 and im 15 now. My dad also used to race with a super pro dragster that run 7s but sammy and vanishing point are awesome, like nothing else !

  • i didnt know they used Zandvoort as a dragstrip, obviously they cant now because they changed the track layout and made the main straight much shorter. :)

  • sick!

  • Oh bloody hell!

  • You must been a huge fan of dragrace, we only have motorcycle dragraces overhere and I like that for sure but I mis the raw power of the Cars and specialy that of Vanishing Point and Oxygen. Thanks for your comment

  • I saw Slammin' Sammy at York US30 Dragway in 1978....it was a HOLY CRAP moment! I've never seen anything like it since. He was in the 3's and over 300 mph, but I don't recall the exact numbers....the run was mind numbing.

  • There is only on sammy miller.

  • He has done the 1/4 mile in 3.58 seconds. Kitty O'neil did it in 3.22 seconds (at 412 MPH), though not on a drag strip (it was in the Mojave Desert).

  • Hense why Santa pod is the fastest Drag strip in the world, coz sammy did nis 3.58 there and kitty did hers on a desert. A Desert has less rolling resistance that a specificaly design drag strip.

  • I'm not sure how that's possible but whatever.

  • trak bite is glue that applies a resistance when the back of the tyre is rolling up from the ground. Much like walking over glue, it requires more effort to lift your foot. sand has a lot lower resistance than glue.

    But, yeah whatever.

  • This run was filmed at Zandvoort in Holland, on a 1/8th mile track instead of the usual 1/4 mile as the shutdown area was short followed by a bend. The elapsed time for the run was 1.6 seconds, and the terminal speed was 319 MPH (Yes MPH) My still photograph of this run can be seen on the Trakbytes UK dragracing site along with other info about Sammy.

I hope that this info helps. Dick T

  • How fast does he actuly go in this video??

  • 376km/h,234 miles/h

  • I saw this guy with this car around this time doing the standard drag racing quarter mile (=0.4 km) in 3.98 seconds. I remember them saying at the time that he accelerated from 0 - 100 miles per hour (=160 Kph) in 0.4 seconds. It was the fastest thing I'd ever seen... looked like it was fired out of an invisible gun. On the run in this video, he was taking it easy!!

  • Your information is quite accurate, I have ridden somewhere the 1/4 Mile in 3.58 seconds with an endspeed of 386 miles per hour(617 Kph)I had the previlege to see him one year later running against his other machine, OXYGEN, driven by an Englishman

  • Note that 0-100 mph in 0.4 seconds is an average accelleration of 11 G. Not for very long time, but still impressive! :-)
