:/ I feel what he's saying. I was under immense pressure to succeed and live up to the standards of a 'model minority'. I got straight A's started university at the age of 15 and am currently doing my masters. It makes me wonder, how much of my achievement was actually fueled by internal determination? I certainly didn't live life to the fullest. No social life, no girlfriend. Even though it's nice being recognized as smart, I don't think it should be a racial expectation.
I am a major Survivor fan. I haven't missed a single episode, and I can say this, Yul is the most deserving winner in my opinion. It's very seldom that someone that plays the game honestly, strategically, and is also a physical threat not only makes it to the end, but also wins.
His team was given the hardest challenge (two members mutinying them, leaving them at a numbers disadvantage) and they held together, won every challenge, and came through together. Lead by Yul and bonded by trust.
@004Daniel Not being the winner in a challenge doesn´t mean that you suck. Not winning survivor doesn´t mean that you suck in the game. Not being the best in an exam doesn´t mean that you suck. Maybe you parents tought you that but it is not true.
@JaCkmArc0 LOL. You said he was a physical threat and I'm just telling you he wasn't. I didn't say he sucked, I said he sucked at challenges. Talk about being defensive over someone you don't even know... Not classy to bring up someone's parents, FYI.
@004Daniel While I agree Ozzy performed amazingly in challenges, I would have to say that that alone does not make him a physical lull. He is in great shape, which is often something that alone can make a contestant a target. I would argue that he was more of a threat than several other players of his season. Being as he wasn't THE BEST, at challenges doesn't make him any less of a fairly well rounded player.
@TeamZealand He was a threat, but I think there were far better physical players than him. I know he wasn't the best, but he hardly, if ever, came in second until it was just the final four and Sundra and Becky pretty much sucked. He was physically fit, but he was not a physical player and if it didn't come into play I wouldn't say he was well rounded. Just my opinion.
@004Daniel Well, see, that is what an average is. He wasn't winning left and right, but he wasn't dead weight. I hadn't meant to insinuate he was an intimidating physical contender, just that he was not, say, Chet or Cochran. When I say well rounded, I mean that he wasn't someone that floated along the whole time like Natalie White...
He played a strategic game and was not afraid to be more or less upfront with who he was playing with. I basically have to say I respect his playing style.
@TeamZealand Idk. He had the numbers after Jonathan flipped and he had Ozzy and the super idol so he could be upfront. Natalie made the galu girl's turn on eric, which is pretty impressive. She was a good social player and it helped that russell sucked. Oh gosh, chet and cochran... Yul did well in the team challenges, but I just can't see him as being well rounded because he was in the bottom or middle in the physical aspect of the show.
I'm Asian, and I completely understand the pressure for Asian kids to excel in academics. However, It's actually not that convincing hearing it from him because he DID go to Stanford and Yale. Strip him of that, and I think people will be less impressed.
His interview was really good and he spoke very intelligently. However, I have to say that this only presents one side of the picture. Anderson Cooper's questions and Yul's answers might lead people to assume that all Asian American parents expect their children to be doctors, lawyers, etc. and give them heavy academic pressure which isn't true.
@sparklingcider6 Obviously it's not always true, but to a large extent is very much is true. Stereotypes are always based on some truth and the Asian parent stereotype is there for a reason. Like Yul said, it's mostly the immigrated parents who have different cultural standards that have these expectations of their children.

@syokim33 Stereotypes are used by those who use labels rather than learn, those who pass judgement rather than seek insight.
