They did it in the 1960s as a bit of a laugh, apparently they had to get Mcnee completely drunk before he would go in the recording studio. It was re-released in the early 90s for some reason and was a big hit.

The reason that "Kinky Boots" was reissued in 1990 was that Simon Mayo on Radio 1 at the time kept playing it on his show. I also remember it being played by Annie Nightingale on R1 in her "Bimbo Slot" on her Sunday night show. When the record finished, she said "now, doesn't that make you want to cringe?"
