Is it not lean Away from the object?

You definitely lean toward the object (downstream) to allow the current to flow under your boat. If you lean upstream, the current will grab the upstream edge of your boat and cause you to flip.

how do you get away from your knees locking up out of a nekcy or a lobo after paddling in 26 degree weather?
